The school library was filled with the usual afternoon activities. Students browsed the shelves in search of material for book reports and homework assignments while others sat at work tables, pouring over notes or covertly playing football with little squares of paper. The book club was meeting in a far corner, discussing the latest Peter Benchly novel and at least one couple disappeared between the stacks for a little extracurricular groping.
No one noticed the slight breeze that opened the library doors nor thought twice as it brushed between tables.
Harry Dresden moved cautiously through the maze of obstacles presented by students and furniture. Although he could cast a passable veil spell, hiding him in plain sight, it wasn't his strongest conjuring and might vanish with any sudden movement or contact.
The quicker he grabbed what he wanted and got out, the better.
Invisible to the mundane eye, Harry still looked both ways before darting down the aisle labeled Romance
"Roberts…," he murmured, scanning the bindings. And there it was! Nora Roberts, Promise Me Tomorrow.
Another swift glance around and then the book was snatched from the shelf. The minute it touched Harry's hand, it, too, became veiled.
Mission accomplished, Harry left the way he came; quickly, quietly, and unseen. No one would know he'd been in the romance section. No one could make fun of him for nabbing a girly book.
The things he did for Bob! What the old spook saw in these things he'd never know…
