Bad Decisions
"So, what do you think? Bang Fangers tonight?"
Diana blinked, her eyes still on her Sidekick. She looked up, squinting in the bright autumn sun. "Huh? Banging what?" She rooted through her purse and pulled out her D&G sunglasses. Her eyes still hadn't adjusted, the consequence of being stuck in flourescent high school hell for eight hours.
Amanda rolled her own eyes and plucked the cell phone from her friend's hands. "The vampire bar, duh. Remember at lunch, when I told you I was tired of all these stupid clubs and dances...how they're all the same? And that I wanted to try something new, and exciting?" The brunette looked down at Diana's phone, reading the text that was still on the screen.
"You didn't tell me that your parents were still fighting."
Sighing, Diana grabbed her phone. "Because you never listen to a word I say if it doesn't concern you. And vampires? Are you serious? That's so gross." She ran her fingers through her blonde hair and took a seat on the bus stop bench. The truth was, her parents were always fighting nowadays. Before, there had been an eye of the storm, periods of calm. Not anymore. From the moment Diana woke up, until she fell asleep, it was a cacophony of yelling, throwing objects, calling names, and using their daughter as a pawn. Whenever she did something good, either parent would claim that Di was just like them...when she did something bad -- which was more often than not as of late -- she was compared to the other parent. It made her stomach burn and tie itself into knots, and when she got to school, she had to pretend to be the image of popular perfection.
"Vampires are not gross," Amanda argued, slinging her zebra-print messenger bag down between them and sitting next to the blonde. "They're sexy and mysterious. Why else would churches and stuff say they're bad? Everything those religious idiots hate ends up being really fun to do, like premarital sex."
Diana closed her eyes, still clutching the Sidekick as if it were a life preserver. "What about the whole blood-sucking part? And their uncanny ability to kill you with their bare hands? Amanda, I will not end up being a meal for some dead freak."
The other girl bit her lip, craning her neck to watch for their bus. "Yeah, but...if you go with me, you won't have to spend all night listening to your dad calling your mom a self-centered whore, or her calling him a stupid asshole."
Considering that for a moment, Diana signed again, the expelled breath making her bangs ruffle. "Fine. But if I get creeped out, even a little, we're leaving. Got it? And no hooking up with some random stranger and leaving me all alone. Or I will purposely get bitten, come back as a vampire, and drain you like cold Diet Coke in July."
Laughing, Amanda grabbed her best friend's hand. "Got it."
