It won't rain all the time... ([info]herearedead) wrote in [info]trapped_inside,

Marching on.
It was bad enough she was in sudden shock with Alice being there, but it was even worse that they seemed to be...well... lost. "If you tell me we're lost I will throw something at you." Rain muttered since she was the one leading. "We went in circles..." now irritated with the map that the Latin beauty had ripped off of a nearby bulletin board she threw it over her shoulder after crumbling it up. "Fucking worthless." Ocampo growled and finally noticed a shadow somewhere along the wall, the kind that brought the hairs on the back of your neck on edge. However, if memory served her right. If she had died, then her body was weak...which gave her oh so much hope about future infections-no, there would be no more infections. Then again, the woman didn't think she'd get infected in the first place before either.

How did Alice's body withstand all the mutation? ... was she mutated? Was what Carlos had told her over the years real? As real as her hand had nearly gotten bitten off.

Alice had to note that Rain had a marvelous sense of direction.

She didn't like being lost - and had admittiedly grown a little irritated. The mention of Matt had gotten her antsy, restless, impatient, and downright curious, and she wanted to see for herself if he really was around just like Rain was.

Alice, as cautious and quick on her feet as always, still had her guns gripped in each hand. She would've snorted and smirked at Rain's words, but she noticed the shadow too.

"Have a weapon on you?" she spoke up, eyes scanning the area briskly until she let her gaze fall upon the shadow that had caught both of their attentions.

John didn't have a marvelous sense of direction, but he did have a marvelous headache. If he didn't know better, he'd wonder if a truck hit him while he'd been sleeping. He figured that maybe he'd just been tossed out of that moving truck. He didn't bother trying to keep track of what parts of him ached. Between the coughing and the unpleasant awakenings, it must have been everything.

That didn't change the fact that he was kicking himself for wandering away from the bathroom. In his groggy frame of mind, he wasn't sure where he was going, or he'd gotten to, or why he was still going this way.

So, John dug out another cigarette. He was just about to put it to his lips when he heard a voice. And quite frankly, a voice was preferable to even painkillers right now.

So John approached, with the sarcastic, but simple, "Well, no, I don't have a weapon. But I've got a light." Cue the cheesy--okay, that wasn't really a smile. But he finished stuffing the cigarette between his lips and flicked on the lighter as he took the last few steps toward the two women.

"No one was talkin' to you." that gruff female voice exhaled as Rain had looked up from the other girl and to the man. Though she may have sounded like a bitch her tone sounded relieved. "And if I had the map still Alice, I might have been able to give him a paper cut." meaning she had no weapon.

Her hands almost twitched and jerked up at hearing the new voice, and she would have almost pointed both guns at him menacingly if it didn't register in her head that this guy was, you know, alive, and possibly had no intentions of snacking on them.

Alice remained quiet for a moment, and understood Rain's words just fine - hence the way she forced a gun into the other girl's hands. She looked at John cautiously, eyebrow raised.

"You've got extras?" she asked, making a motion to the cigarette in his hands, because god knows she could use one right now.

An expression of amusement crossed his face at Rain's comment, but Alice's comment wiped any trace of the sentiment from his face. John went very serious, pausing only to light the smoke, and take the first drag before taking it from his mouth and gesturing toward Alice.

"Well, none for you, if that's what you're asking." And John, asshole that he was, took care to blow the smoke in her direction.

Glaring in his direction Rain would have attempted to grab the cigarettes away from him, had he not been so tall. "You speak to her like that one more time, and I will assist you out of this facility, on your ass. Preferably with your dick shoved in your mouth." smiling angelically. Her brown eyes sparkled with just the look at him. He was hot. And it was killing her. But no one spoke to the bitch like that, unless of course it was Ocampo herself. Alice didn't deserve that treatment. She knew the other could handle her own, but it didn't matter. Friends went a long way, especially when the woman sacrificed everything to have them live.

Well, someone didn't learn those fundamental sharing lessons you'd usually learn in kindergarten. Which was fine with her - she wasn't about to get her panties twisted in a knot over something so trivial, but his rudeness and aloofness had her slightly annoyed.

But, that annoyance was washed out quickly - Rain's words had caught her off guard a little, but eventually her lips curved into a smirk of amusement.

She really did miss that crazy, vulgar bitch.

Alice stuck the extra gun back to its respective holster. "Then to my next question, ass. Did something dead and walking bite you, and if so, show me where the big baddy touched you." Her tone didn't change much - it was still monotone, blunt, and sharp - and all said with a straight, slightly mocking face.

"I've been tossed around enough lately, thanks." John, shifted, bending exaggeratedly to the side to keep his precious smoke away from Rain.

"No ones bitten me in quite awhile. I assure you." John, instead of stuffing the lighter back into his pocket, pulled the half-crumpled pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. And he tossed them to Alice.

"I want the rest back." And his eyebrows rose meaningfully.

Didn't take long for the young Latina to snap out of the idea that maybe she'd kick some ass and sharply elbowed Alice in the side for her gun. However it was more of a friendly type of elbow then a rude one. "It'll do." a slight grumble, light hearted tone than before and instead peered with those dark eyes toward the man.

"You're definitely not getting those back." and for the first time, the brunette smiled.

The box of cigarettes was caught quickly. Well, that was a surprising change of mind. She flipped open the lid, rolling her eyes at Rain's gesture, and she slipped two cigarettes from the pack. "Hold on," she mumbled to her and tossed the pack bag over to John. "We could use that light of yours, too."

She handed Rain one of the cigarettes, but not the gun yet. The bitch could wait.

A frown, then. A deep one, almost a scowl leveled down at Rain. And John kept the lighter captive for a moment, until Alice had tossed the unhappily desolate pack back to him. And then she slid the pack away, and offered over the lighter.

"So." Might as well get down to business. "Either of you have any clue what's going on here?" He asked it flatly, taking another drag of smoke into his longs. And he savored it a long time before he let it out. He didn't have many left after all.

"Or where here is?" he added as an after thought.

Raising both eyebrows in an arch, her brown eyes caught sight of that gleaming gun but all she was offered was a cigarette. "I-fuck it." and as that lighter was offered, Rain decided that she'd might as well take a smoke in the name of J.D. He told her to start again anyway...so smoking brought back memories of him. She frowned.

"Does it look like we do?"

Mmm.

Alice took her sweet damn time before responding. Her first priority, for once, was lighting the cigarette, which she quickly did after the light as offered. She stuck it in her mouth, sucked in, plucked it out, and blew smoke.

Zombies. They were a real stress.

She wasn't sure where to start though - she had an inkling of what was going on. The only thing she knew for certain is that Umbrella had something to do with it, but what they were doing and why they were doing it came up as a complete white blank.

She fiddled with the cigarette between her fingers, watching the bud burn orange, and glanced up at Rain and then at John.

"Umbrelalla's got something to do with it, most likely," she spoke up quietly. "It's the only explanation I have."

"Umbrella?" John was very much out of the loop. He tried to think of Umbrella, but all he could seem to recall was that they made some kinda aspirin knock off. His head cocked to the side, and he shoved one hand into his pocket. The other facilitate his smoking.

"So what, Umbrella's in league with Johnson and Johnson, and they're starting a world war with Pfizer?" Another drag, like clockwork. He smoked at the pace of a chain smoker. And it wasn't likely that the meager remains of that pack would last him the rest of the day, at this rate.

"You're going to have to catch me up. I'm not much used to issues outside of my...circle. And that circle happens to be in L.A."

"Ha.... Ha..." snatching up the lighter from Alice's slender and graceful hands, Rain nearly snorted sarcastically at Constantine's little joke and lit her own cigarette. For once she thought about tossing the lighter back to him, but instead pocketed it. Who knew when she'd need light? Or to light someone on fire.

"Got a name?" this time taking an inhale of her cancer stick and blew the smoke out in John's way.

Smartass.

"Don't be fooled," Alice murmured and just left it at that, taking another smoke. She was going to explain - eventually. She figured she would let Rain finish with the introductions before continuing.

"John Constantine." It was easy enough to get out of him. He might had produced a business card, if...he actually had those. He glanced down at the tile floor.

"This Umbrella wouldn't happen to be in league with the devil's son would it?" It was...glib, and likely insincere, but there was a glimmer of seriousness in that look that he turned on the two women, even if it didn't last long.

Amongst this, he declined to divert to the niceties of asking people's names.

"Spence? He might have been. She fucked em'." throwing a sideways glance to Alice after removing the cigarette from her lips with a thumb and middle finger. Finally when it seemed like she had enough nicotine in her system, the girl reluctantly tossed the cigarette down and stomped it out with a combat boot.

"Nice to meet you, John, I'm Rain, this is Alice." sarcasm.

Wait, when did Spence get into this conversation?

If Alice was the type to eat her cigarette, she would've choked at the mention of her, ah, ex-husband; but instead her eyes widened a little and she gave Rain a brief odd look before shaking her head.

"Umbrella did top-secret experiments with viral weaponry. I was head security of their underground facility, The Hive, until a virus they were working on broke loose. Everyone died, but the problem was that they didn't stay dead." She took the comment about the 'devil's son' lightly - there was no way she would have taken it literally.

"That's pretty much it, in a nutshell." She shrugged.

"Pleasure's all mine...ladies." Definitely sarcasm. John pushed out something of a sigh. Great. Viruses, just when he was hoping he might be actually useful.

"Oh, undead. Well..." John didn't even question it. He just finished his smoke, and smothered it beneath his heel. He didn't even seem to miss a beat.

At the same time, despite the shrug and the nonchalance, John didn't have anything to say to that. Really.

She couldn't help but lightly snicker. Though it wasn't funny. No it wasn't funny at all picturing such a truly remarkable person with the scum of the earth like Spence. However snapped out of it, Rain looked over to Constantine. "You sound like you run a zombie motel. All you have to do is make sure they don't fall apart at the desk."

"Only problem is... they fucking bite."

Well, he was certainly a bouncing ball of light and sunshine and all that optimistic crap.

Alice didn't have much more to say, either - whoever this guy was didn't seem phased by the fact that there were a few dead people that could be dangerously contagious dragging themselves around. Maybe it was hubris, or maybe this complete and total bastard of a stranger could actually fend for himself.

So she continued smoking until she finished her cigarette, letting Rain talk - she did quite a good job at that, Alice observed.

"Do they run?" Apparently he was all business now. "Do they use tools? Work together? Can they learn?" Too many questions, but they came out leisurely. "A...friend of mine watches a lot of horror movie."

His arms crossed over his chest, and the exorcist leaned back against the wall. "And believe me, I'm used to dealing with things that shouldn't exist."

He didn't go further into it, just leaned there. "I'll try not to let them bite you." Not just asshole, sexist asshole. Or so it seemed.

"Are you full of shit?" Rain asked bluntly as her hazel hues looked from him, darting to Alice. Giving the woman a look that had said a thousand words. But how did they know if the zombies could read, write, kill with tools or weapons? So instead she rasped. "Can they?"

And here she thought they were joking.

"Well there's that." A pause. "At least." And suddenly John couldn't take it anymore. He scratched his neck, and then his collarbone, and his hand dipped into his coat pocket and snagged out the cigarettes. He pulled out another one and lit up. Yeah, those smokes weren't going to last him.

"So what's the plan?" Granted, he wasn't being all that helpful as of yet, but these two seemed to have experience. He was smart enough to realize this. And even if he did ignore Rain's initial comment, he would afford them their deserved respect in the manner.

Plan?

...

Yeah, a plan would be nice.

"Apparently there's other people in the building," Alice began, talking slow steps over to a corner, to peek around it cautiously. If there were survivors...

And one of them being Matt...

"We find them first, get some shelter, and stock up on supplies. I don't plan on being in this damn place for too long, but it won't hurt to be prepared." Her shoulders shrugged lightly and she looked over her shoulder, as if waiting for any approval or rejection of her proposal.

John nodded. It sounded reasonable. He took one particularly long drag of the cigarette and let his mind wander to Chas. He hoped the kid wasn't here. Scratching fingers up through his hair a moment, John glanced between the two of them and then off down the hall.

"Makes sense." A pause, and then. "Neither of you happened to see a kind of dopey looking teenager with curly hair and floppy hat, have you?" Okay, so he was kind of worried about Chas.

"Alright, since we've agreed on a plan, do you have a better sense of direction than this bitch here?" 'Bitch' referred to Rain as she spoke to John, but again - it was done in a joking, playful manner. "We've been lost for awhile."

"Kids?" It took a moment for John to register that. Pulling fingers back through his hair, he shook his head. "No. He's more of a friend of mine. I don't have any kids." He nodded his thanks to Rain for offering to keep an eye out for Chas.

Still, on a more serious note than contemplating fatherhood--John tried not to shudder--his attention turned next to Alice, and he wagged his thumb back over his shoulder. "I don't have the greatest sense of direction, but I came from that direction.

"Not my fuckin' fault the map was wrong." eyeing the space in back of her as if to glare at the map which she had thrown steps back. She wasn't going to leave the damn place until she found the people. And it wasn't because she felt it deep inside her heart to be the good guy and save innocent citizens - although that was a nice thought - but if one of them was Matt...

Even if he'd like to, because hell if he knew what that was about. There were bigger concerns at the moment, however. His attention returned, presently, to Alice.

John nodded, in the midst of nursing his cigarette, and turned to start leisurely off in the direction they'd come. The dull ache in his chest had eased into something more manageable than what he'd woken up with. And hell, he was in the company of two rather attractive ladies--who were armed--so he figured things were looking up.

Not that it was hard to compete with waking up on the street amidst a pile of broken glass.

For now he didn't offer any further conversation. The two of them knew each other, and they were women besides. They could handle the idle chatter. He'd just do the navigating--and hopefully not get them more lost.
