NAZCA LINES & CHIMU EMPIRE
CHARACTERS: See tags.
SETTING: The Nazca lines and remnants of the Chimu Empire along the Chicama River from March 2nd onward.
SUMMARY:
NAZCA LINES & CHIMU EMPIRE ABOUT The Kingdom of Chimor (or Chimu Empire, pic here) is a fallen empire with origins stretching back to the beginning of the first millennium AD and and one of the Americas’ largest prehispanic mud-brick settlements. The city was the home of the Chimu kings, and center of a vast irrigation network that made the desert extremely fertile at it’s height. It covers 7.7 square miles and is centered on a 2.3 square mile urban core dominated by a series of huge enclosures - the palaces of the Chimu kings - ciudadelas, eleven in total. When conquered by the Inca around 1470 AD, the capital was the center of an empire that covered a stretch of 621 miles of the Pacific coast and controlled about two-thirds of all agricultural land ever irrigated along the Pacific coast of South America. It contained many miles of irrigation canals, including inter-valley canals, to expand the area under cultivation. A long canal was built from the Chicama River to the north, in order to irrigate farmland. The empire's warriors were exceptionally powerful, as evidenced by massive panels depicting warriors with fanged staffs. Other panels show the Kings speaking to a large serpent, under which foreign armies lie dead, waters flow, and plants grow. As it turns out, the Kings' Serpent was a basilisk, the protectorate of the city of Chan Chan. The basilisk was worshipped as a god, and responsible for building the vast irrigation canals. The basilisk also protected the city from invaders in two ways: 1) sheer fear of the Chan Chan Serpent within the city walls and 2) providing warriors with weapons that were laced with the venom or, in the case of the elite, broken fangs. Human sacrifices were made to the basilisk, usually defeated tribes, keeping Chan Chan at the ascent of power due to fear. Other panels indicate that at some point before the fall of the Chimu to the Incan empire, the basilisk was taken by another large figure, depicted on a carved panel to be speaking to the serpent as well. Without their protector, the irrigation canals fell into disrepair, warriors only had the fangs to rely on, and the city was more susceptible to attack. More information about the Kingdom of Chimor can be found here. KEY LOCATIONS Both made up and based on real places for the sake of simplicity. NAZCA CAMP. A camp Order Group 3 set up & start out from in the desert. NAZCA DESERT. Aside from being home to the Nazca lines, there's also a herd of 150 anti-human and pretty territorial centaurs, which live near an oasis. For a price, they'd be willing to share their knowledge as well as provide food and shelter. TRUJILLO. The second largest city in Peru and in close proximity to important sites where the Moche and Chimu civilizations evolved. Its main exports are asparagus, rice and shoes. Trujillo is the most important economic center of northern Peru (for muggles); it is an inland commercial and transport center for the surrounding farming areas. Its numerous shopping malls, supermarkets, department stores, and similar amenities make Trujillo a modern city. Characters would stay here while exploring surrounding ruins. CHIMU RUINS. The ruins of the Chimu Empire. There are very tall walls, some of which are 26 feet high (to protect very precious and deadly pet AKA Basilisk) and extensive storerooms, which have a capacity of 2,000 square meters. While those that have been unearthed have been found empty, they might find more underground covered in devil's snare where a basilisk could once be found. THE SET-UP THE DATES.
