Happy and proud; at last I knew
Porphyria worshiped me: surprise

While I debated what to do.


At last the harridan is gone and I am alone with my love, though I feared our only touch tonight would be in the vow I swore, the one I would have sworn and kept even without the spell. She is everything to me now, the only thing I have left after all these years, and for her I will do anything. I watch her light the fire in this dreary place but it is her that brightens the room and now we sit together, the flames dancing before our eyes.

Then she is next to me and trembling, a motion I fear means more tears and so I draw her close and guide us to a sofa. My actions are tentative at best, but I know it will be that hesitance she responds to best. I am right, as she turns into me and rests her head on my shoulder. It always has been the weaker side of me she has been drawn in by, ever since the first time we met when I was no more than a first year and she an untouchable vision of perfection. I love one woman before, love her even now with a hunger than will never be met, but it is the woman here with me now I have always worshiped.

“Thank you, Severus, for protecting him. If you had not been here, if you had not promised, I do not know what I would have done.” How soft and grieved her voice is, but when her eyes raise and her gaze meets mine, I see more than just her gratitude. I know in that glance that she worships me too, for all I can give her that no other has been able to do. I will protect her son and though I lost Lily to an insufferable husband and then the Dark Lord, I will not lose Narcissa to the same. I will protect her from all that threatens her.

Her head shifts on my shoulder as she stares into the fire and it disturbs strands of her blonde hair which sweep across the front of my robes. I am captivated. So blonde, not that weak shade of colour of her husband's or son's, but a pale gold that is far more valuable than any Galleon, as pure a blonde as Lily's was red. My hand covers hers and she grips it tightly, knuckles white with the force of how desperately she clings to me. In the reflection of the window glass, I see a smile. It could be nothing else. She is happy for the moment, here with me, and I must protect her from ever being unhappy again.

I all but mutter the spell I know must, quietly so I will not disturb her but with all the force I know I needed to use, rendering her still and peaceful in the flash of green light from my wand.

I wind her hair – that delightful, gorgeous hair I've smoothed after it goes wild in my dreams – once, twice, thrice around my fingers and palm until it covers me. It brushes her neck and I lean in to kiss her throat, that tall, thin column of pale skin that I have longed to mark if only it would not leave the colorful proof of my love on her flawless skin. No mark should ever touch her.

Gently, with more care than I have used in years with anyone, I turn her so she rests more comfortably in my arms, her soft curves all but melting into me as I fully open her eyes. Eyelashes so pale, fairer than her hair, but it is her eyes I long to look in to now, to gaze into the depths of blue within. I am thrilled beyond measure at what I see, for they hold the darker shade of blue than normal, the colour they always were when she looked at Lucius. That is now for me and forever will be for me. I stroke her pale cheek, tinted faintly with the pink it gains in my dreams and lay my lips now to her forehead, temples and cheeks before at last claiming my kiss. No words could describe the sweetness of the moment, but I know we now have what we both have long wanted.

Summoning a blanket close, I wrap it around us both and press my face into that wondrous hair of hers. The fire and my warmth are enough to warm her, I am certain. She is mine and I know that is how she wants it.
