Subject: A long over-due conversation (a day or two before the party).
Who: Olivia Blake.
Where: Christopher's estate in Surrey.
Warnings: None.
Open to: Christopher Blake, possibly anyone else in the house later.

Olivia had been spending more time alone than usual. She and Olga had been inseparable up until a week ago, since then they had been spending some time apart. They had been sharing a bed since they arrived, platonically of course, at least for the most part, they did cuddle up together and kiss whenever the urge hit them, but a few days ago things had gone a little farther. Olga had touched her in a way she had not expected and while enjoyed it afterwords she felt so strange, Olga must have sensed this and had been giving the girl space ever since. Olivia knew she hurt her by pulling away emotionally, but she was afraid, afraid and not sure who to turn to, and now she felt miserable for having hurt the girl who loved her.

She was curled up on one of the high backed chairs in the sunroom, watching the rain come down as she mindlessly petted the fuzzy white kitten in her lap. It dawned on her how strange it was to miss her brothers when they were all living in the same house, but Chris was so busy these days, especially now that he had the lovely French Duchess to tend to, she still wanted to discuss that with him. Dem, well he was around but had been a little distant so she left him to himself. She wasn't even sure where Lucas was in the house or what he was doing, but she was sure he was happy. As always, her brothers were moving forward and she was left standing still.

Lulled by the sound of the rain hitting the windows and the soft purring of the kitten in her lap, Olivia drifted off into light sleep.

"I do not require a great deal of your time, Allison, just your patience in getting the chambers done," said Christopher, who was chattering to his chief maid of the house after she had complained of the revolutionaries in the outhouses. He knew it must not be an easy job for her recently and yet she had so far managed without a bad word to say. He supposed the three extra mouths of his siblings had added to her daily work, wherever they were, but as Christopher implored her to continue without a fuss she finally agreed and scuttled off to sort out the rest of the servants.

If only other things were that simple. After he and Therese had shared that kiss he had no clue where they stood with each other. He realised very much so that his siblings had stayed out of the way - Olivia with her maid, Lucas with his business and Demetri sorting out those blackmailing claims. Christopher did not know where to turn to breathe, and felt in that moment just as Allison must have.

He did not realise Olivia was sleeping in the sunroom or else he would have been quieter. Seeing his sister dozing now he felt quite guilty and walked over to her to see if she was still resting, thinking how precious she looked in the dim light which managed to break through the clouds.

The noise actually did not wake her, it was the sensation of being watched that finally caused her eyes to flutter open. "Chrissy." she said once she saw him, but then it suddenly dawned on her that she was all curled up on the chair, not sitting in the correct fashion and she moved her feet down off the chair so she could sit correctly. Not that it mattered as she was dressed plainly and had left her hair down.

The kitten did not like her human moving when it had grown comfortable and voiced it's displeasure in the loudest mew a two month old kitten could manage. She quickly ran her hand over the cat and looked to her brother. "I'm sorry, am I in your way?" she asked softly, sleep still tinting her voice and eyes.

"No, no, do not be so silly," Christopher hushed her, sitting down in the chair opposite. He smiled at the kitten, almost feeling broody for one, before he raised his dark eyes to look at his sister. She seemed troubled, and anxious. Certainly sleepy. It worried him. "I did not mean to disturb you, Livia... though it concerns me that you are sleeping here. Did you not have a very good night?" he asked, and finally reached out a finger for the kitten to play with.

The kitten put a paw on his finger then after a few sniffs, licked, blue eyes watching him. Olivia shook her head, "No, I'm sleeping fine, I've just felt so tired lately, sleep doesn't seem to help." she slept a lot when she was depressed, but she was depressed so rarely that it was not a surprise that few in her family knew. "The rain is very soothing, especially in here, it sounds perfect."

The kitten bit the end of his finger playfully, little white tail flicking back and forth. "I met her the other day, she's very nice, and really very pretty." she was speaking of Tessa. "You two would look adorable together."

"Yes it is rather soothing. I often come in here when I need to think, it helps a great deal," he agreed, and smiled at the little feline as she patted him. Yes he would definitely have to get one for himself, and besides - this little one could do with a companion. "I do hope you are not under the weather. You do not feel ill do you? Nothing is wrong?"

But then she mentioned someone Christopher did not really gather at that moment and he looked at her in a rather confused state. "Who are you talking about?"

She shook her head a little, dark eyes looking down at the cat in her lap. "No, I'm feeling fine, Chris. I've been missing your, Dem and Luc's company, but other than that I am perfectly fine. Ever since this one's mother," she rubbed the little one's back gently. "Gave birth to her litter and I gave most of them away, I haven't had much to occupy my time. I need a new hobby or something I think."

She turned her eyes back to her brother. "Thérèse du Labarre, I met her the other day in the library. Lovely woman, even lovelier accent, I've been tempted to ask her to read aloud. I bet everything sounds lovely when she says it." she tilted her head. "In that letter I sent you, the one you never answered, I was asking about her. I feel better now that I've met her in person, and she has such nice things to say about you."

"Does she now?" he said, frowning slightly. Therese was a topic he did not really wish to discuss as he did not know enough on it to comment. Olivia tended to ask awkward and confusing questions, ones which Christopher had not thought about and was forced to contemplate upon her inquiry. "And you are already pairing us off to marry are you?"

Stroking behind the kitten's ear he looked at her and commented, "You look thoroughly miserable, Olivia."

She shook her head again, "No, but she is lovely and if she pleases you as much as I think she could please anybody, then I wouldn't have anything against it. I just want you to be happy, Chris, you haven't been happy in such a long time. Too long." she said softly, the kitten pressing it's forehead against his hand and arching it's back, expecting to be petted.

"You're so sweet to me, big brother." she teased, smiling weakly. "I'm alright, I'm just having an off day."

Ever the one to please, Christopher petted the kitten with a small smile on his face. "I am happy, Olivia. I have my family here, my best friend, and a nice new friend who I am liking getting to know. That is all." It was a weak explanation but she was not going to get anything else unless she pressed for it. Christopher never gave anything up easily. "You are my darling sister. You are not allowed to have an off day. What is wrong?" he asked softly, looking at her intently. "You can tell me."

"You haven't been truly happy since she married, and it's only been worse since she died. You forget I was there through all of it. You may be glad to have us here, but you're not happy, not truly happy." it was almost amusing that they were nearly saying the same things to each other. But Olivia was not thinking about it like that.

The kitten decided that her human's brother was far more interesting in that moment and once he pulled his hand away the cat lept from Olivia's lap to his. Liv watched the kitten then shook her head, "No." she certainly could not tell him. "I'll be alright tomorrow, I promise, just a bad day."

"There is not a day goes by that I do not miss her," Christopher admitted, hand beginning to shake as he paid attention to the kitten. He withdrew it as soon as he realised his tremors and cleared his throat, his emotions threatening to take the better of him. "I am trying. To move on, that is. I am trying."

Once he had managed to swallow any dangerous lumps in his throat he again surveyed her with keen, if misty, eyes. "We all have bad days. As you said you were there throughout all of my ordeal, it is only fair I am here for you when you need help or someone to talk to. You were the most supportive person of all. I would not be here if it was not for you." And there lay more meaning in those words than Olivia realised.

She couldn't look at him, instead she turned her head, elbow resting on the arm of the chair, chin pressed against her closed hand. She could not stand to see him cry and she could not look at him when she lied, how ever slightly.

"I upset someone close to me, I hurt them, not on purpose mind you. I... I was overwhelmed and they think it is a rejection. It hurts, a lot, and I do not know how to fix it." she finally looked to him. "But please, don't question me about it, in fact, please forget I've said anything." she felt terribly ashamed, and it only made her feel worse.

"Olivia..." he sighed, shaking his head. "Please do not worry how I will take it. I do wish you would trust me. You do realise you are the only person besides Charlot who has ever seen me cry over Helene?" he asked, tilting his head. "You are the only person I have entrusted to talk to so openly about my feelings over her, and I ask you do the same and tell me all there is to know. If you do, I will tell you something about Therese and I," he bargained, a small smile on his lips.

She shook her head, hands coming up to cover her face, trying to hide the tears that suddenly came. She couldn't tell him, and it was hitting her again how wrong and unnatural her feelings were in the eyes of everyone else. He wouldn't take it well, she was convinced, he would probably send her back to mother just because he was so ashamed of her. He loved her, but she was bringing such shame to the family and he would have to make sure it did not touch everyone else in the family.

"I can't, please, Chris. I cannot let you see me any differently than you do now. I couldn't stand to see disgust in your eyes when you look at me."

"Olivia!" Christopher was shocked and immediately lifted the kitten from his lap so he could move to her and put an arm around her. He could not stand to see her cry just as she hated to see him weep too, and it was with great, deep concern that he gaver her a hug as best as he could, squeezing her arms. His brotherly instincts took over and he was almost as worried as if he were a parent.

"You could murder someone and I would not be disgusted. They would probably deserve it," he told her, trying to assure her in some way that he would not see her differently. "You are my sister. I love you no matter what you say or do or believe... You would no doubt look at me very drastically if you knew half the things I were doing, but I shall not scar you with the details." His attempt at a joke may have fallen flat and he kissed the side of her head affectionately. "I do not want you to think that you cannot confide in me. It makes me feel awful."

She felt better once she was in his arms, but not by much, she was so afraid to tell him, but she could keep nothing from Chris. It was amusing though, to think of Olivia killing someone when she hated killing bugs and often set off any mouse traps she came across.

"I..." she began, whispering softly, hoping that there was a chance that he could not hear her. "That Russian I brought with me from London, she's not my maid. She is the daughter of a Russian nobleman, she ran away from her family and was forced to become a prostitute to take care of herself, and I could not stand the thought of her being with others while I felt so strongly for her, so I brought her with me. I love her, Chris, or at least I think I do, and I've hurt her." her tears came more frequently now as she trembled in his arms, afraid of what he would say next.

What Chris said next was "Ah." It seemed a common occurance among the Blake children to find the same sex appealing and Olivia was now added to that list. Rubbing her shoulder gently in reassurance he said softly, "and why do you think you have hurt her?" He did not question her. He did not ask how this had come to be, how the woman was a Russian noblewoman, why Olivia loved her. He accepted it all as she told him. His time to confess about Charlot would come very soon.

Olivia went pale, even if her nose and eyes were red. She was so shocked that he was taking this so well she found she could not speak. It took some swallowing and a few moments of blinking before she could even respond. "I..."

She pulled back a little and looked him in the face, she appeared very uncomfortable. "We have been distant the past few days, and I'm afraid that she thinks I've rejected her. Now please don't as me why, because that's personal." she was not going to speak about her sex life, or lack of one, with Christopher, he was like a father to her.

Christopher tried to restrict the little amused smile on his face so that Olivia would not notice it, but he couldn't quite manage. He did, however, nod to agree to his silence and make his smile disappear after a few moments. Of course he realised what she was talking about. He did not need her to explain. "Have you tried speaking to her about it?" he asked, stroking her arm still in gentle comfort. "That usually works for me. We may fight but it clears the air to start afresh.."

His little smile did actually make her feel a little better. He wasn't cross or ashamed of her, he still adored her and he was still her brother. It really was such a relief, especially since she knew her brother would tell no one.

She shook her head then brought her cheek down to rest against his shoulder. "Every time we are in the same room I can feel how hurt she is and I start feeling miserable so nothing gets said. We've stopped talking all together and I don't know what to do. And you know we've been sharing a bed, just for sleeping do not worry. We sleep back to back and barely look at each other when morning comes."

"Olivia I would not mind if you shared your bed for anything else, ou know that..." he told her, resting his head on hers as they shared their little embrace. He did not like the sound of their current situation however, and he frowned to himself. "I do think you should talk to her, Livia. It will do neither of you good to ignore the situation. The distance between you will just grow bigger and you will lose her without knowing if she would have stayed if you had tried. Believe me you do not want that burden on your shoulders. I do not want it for you. Speak to her. If she loves you, she will listen."

She actually didn't know that as she had never had another person in her bed before, but she was pleased that Chris was understanding.

Olivia sighed softly, "I know you're right, Chris, you always are. I do not want to lose her, especially now that I am all she has." The kitten, who had been walking about the sun room, decided it wanted attention once more. It lept onto Olivia's lap and started mewing as it walked about.

"I understand. I do not want to see you so unhappy. It is often best to resolve a lover's quarrel before it gets out of hand. I know you would regret her leaving because of you. If you want me to talk to her or do anything for you, just say the word and I will, darling."

Christopher scratched behind the kitten's ear, thinking again of when he would go and buy another kitten. "I cannot have you upset."

"I know, Chris, I know." she sweetly kissed his cheek. "You are truly the best of brothers." not of her brothers of course, Liv didn't play favorites, but he was the best type of brother. "And as sweet as that is of you to offer, Olga felt uncomfortable around Thérèse, I fear speaking to you would be too overwhelming for her."

She looked down at the kitten, running a finger down its back. "So, speaking of Thérèse..."

"Aah!" Christopher turned red and he grinned at the floor. "The interrogation begins!" He did not mind that she was asking after Therese. It pleased him that she was taking an active interest in his happiness, and there could be no harm in that.

"I did promise you to tell you a snippet, didn't I? Well you will be happy to know, dear Olivia, that... we shared our first kiss the other day, in the iibrary." He smiled wide, still looking at the kitten. "I was not lying when I said I was trying to move on, see. Though I do hope Charlot does not think I am replacing him or forcing him out.." he added with a grave frown, forgetting for the moment how Olivia might take it.

Liv smiled at his jesting and that smile grew bigger when he mentioned their kiss. "I am so happy for you, she is such a sweet woman."

"Why would...?" But she frowned then. Olivia was a bright girl, but was not blessed with the gift of common sense, apparently the little world she lived in had different rules. "Oh..." her eyes went wide when it finally dawned on her what she was saying. "OH! Oh, I see. I didn't know that you and he were... I mean I didn't know that you..." she blinked a few times at her brother. "Well, now I feel a little foolish for having had such a crush on him for all these years."

Christopher took a moment to realise what he had just said and why Olivia was acting like that, when he too blinked, eyes wide, and blushed a violent red. "Ah... I um... well yes only a few years ago. He is very much - a ladies man he just... with me..." he said, trying to explain but finding his words fluttering off somewhere. "And I only... with him. It was a matter of need. And.. comfort."

She went a little pale and held up a hand. "Please, as your darling little sister who looks up to you and adores you with all of her heart, I beg you, no details please. I don't need images of you doing that with anyone, regardless of their gender in my head." Her brothers did not have sex, at least not in her mind, and she liked it that way. It was too much to think about.

She kissed his cheek again to ease him, she didn't like him so red and flustered. "So, do you think you will marry Thérèse?" she asked, hoping to get away from the subject of her brother and Charlot.

"That is a complicated question on so many levels," Christopher chuckled, glad to be off the topic of Charlot but also wishing that she had not asked of marriage. He could not exactly explain that he was to hand Therese over to the authorities, once he knew if she was a threat to the revolution in Paris, and yet he knew it was something he would have to face eventually. Olivia would ask questions about where Therese had gone and Christopher would be in pieces.

"I have only just kissed her I hardly think that is foundation enough to warrant a marriage."

Once again the kitten was screaming for attention so she pushed the little one onto its back and rubbed its little belly, letting it bite her fingers. "But you're not Dem, you don't run about kissing everyone. You only do that when someone means more to you."

Looking up at her brother she watched him for a moment. "You do love her, don't you?"

Christopher turned to his sister and frowned. "Olivia... I have known her but a few months, and shared one kiss. I am not in love with her. I do care deeply for her, that much is true, but I do not love her. Sorry to dash your hopes of a big grand wedding at last but I fear with her current situation marriage is not on the cards."

And he hoped that was the end of it, but knowing Olivia she would be insistent.

She frowned right back at him. "You're being obstinate and foolish, big Brother." she tapped him on the nose three times with her finger to emphasize this. "If you do not love her now, and I am saying if because I think you do, you just haven't realized it yet, you will soon. She is wonderful and absolutely everything you need in a woman, and I can understand your reticence, but I knew Helene too and it seems to me that she would have wanted you to be happy."

She let go of the kitten's belly only to begin rubbing its back. "I know you are trying, but I think you need to try a little harder so you won't push happiness away with both hands as you have been doing for so long."

Christopher sighed. He hoped to God he was not in love with her but he did not think he was. He could easily fall for her and was probably on the verge of doing so, but as he now explained to Olivia - "It is more complicated than that. Far more complicated. I cannot describe it in further detail, but I promise you I will try."

A promise which unfortunately, he would have to break the moment he made it.

Olivia had obviously forgotten how difficult Christopher was and she sighed heavily when she was forced into remembering. "Christopher..."

Olivia let out a dramatic sigh, pressing a hand to the side of her cheek as she rolled her eyes. "You can bite him if you want, Rupert." she muttered watching her brother and the kitten. She was happy he was doing better, that he had at least found a woman he cared for, but he was still occasionally irritating, especially when he was being stubborn. She would have to talk to Demetri and Lucas about it, though she knew Lucas would simply shrug and go back to what he was doing, and if she could manage to talk to Dem without him growing distant it would be a miracle.

"You know I just want you to be happy, don't you?" she asked as she watched him.

"Wupert - is that your name?" he asked the little kitten as if it would reply. At the moment it was a suitable distraction from his sister's insistance he should already be asking Therese to marry him, but he knew she would continue down this road unperturbed. Eventually raising his head to look at her he smiled with a slight sigh. "And I want you to be happy, Olivia. Things just take time. I am sure you and Olga will heal things over, as I am sure myself and Therese will - come to an understanding."

The kitten mewed loudly in response to his name being used twice. Olivia looked puzzled, "Come to an understanding?" she asked, blinking once or twice. "That has to be the worst thing I've ever heard, Chris, and I used to read those awful romance novels mother used to keep about the house."

Olivia couldn't understand holding back when you felt so strongly for someone else, but then that was perhaps why she was having such trouble in her own relationships. "Careful with Rupert, he's a little trouble maker. Aren't you?" she tapped the kitten's nose.

"I don't know, I quite like him," Christopher smiled, still cradling him as if he were a baby. He did adore animals, and if he could he would fill up his house with thousands of them. However, he had a house full of revolutionaries posing as servants and staff, which was already overflowing as it was.

"I know you think I am about as romantic as a toadstool but I - Olivia..." he sighed greatly, shaking his head. "I cannot imagine loving anyone else. I still do not want to imagine it. I feel like I am betraying Helene's memory, and as ridiculous as that may be I cannot get past that yet. Therese does not know of Helene, and I am reluctant to tell her. She does not need to know, does not want to know, and I shall not offer up the information freely."

At least then if you give her the brush off, which I will be completely and utterly ashamed of you if you do, at least she will understand why. It is a bond between you, if you truly look at it, she lost her husband, you lost Helene. She might be the only one who will completely understand how you feel and what you went through, why deny yourself such a comfort?"

Olivia sighed, "You need to stop torturing yourself over Helene, she wouldn't want that for you."

"I know that," Christopher replied after a long pause, his eyes misting at so much mention of Helene. He hated talking about her in such great detail as it tended to bring up unwanted feelings, things he thought he was able to bury and ignore. "But neither of us got what we wanted. It is a curse we have to bear."

Though she was right Therese had lost her husband, the face that he could seek comfort in sharing his grief with another woman, someone he could possibly grow to feel more than friendship for, was disturbing him. A private man, he did not wish to burden his own sorrows on someone who already had their own.

She sighed once again, leaning over to kiss his temple sweetly. "You're giving me a headache from keeping in my desire to shake you back to your senses." which was rather amusing as Olivia was often lacking common sense, or at least she was told that.

"I need tea." she announced as she got to her feet and headed for the door. Tea and kittens fixed everything in Olivia's little bubble. Once she called to one of the servants for it she leaned against the door frame and looked to her brother. "Are you ever going to tell me why you have a bunch of Frenchmen stuffed in the outer houses or shall I continue to just assume what I like?" she may not have been the most observant of persons, but she wasn't blind.

Christopher almost balked but remained calm and looked up at his sister with the slightest hint of panic. Well there was no use lying. He could just bend the truth. "They are fleeing the revolution. They are hiding from the authorities," he said blankly, not mentioning he had both revolutionaries and those being sought for execution in their midst. "I house them here until it is safe for them to go elsewhere."

Olivia actually took his answer rather calmly, she had assumed something like that was going on. She was so very proud of him and she smiled, not seeing that hint of panic in his eyes. "It is a wonderful thing you are doing for these people, and for Therese as well."

"So this is what you've been doing all this time?"

If Olivia knew about Therese she might have disagreed with that... "Yes. As Helene met her end because of the foolishness of the French authorities, I seek to set it to rights by helping whatever way I can." Avoiding commenting on the fact that he was soon to shop five of his number to the English authorities, he then shut his mouth.
