Ready to be called on.
Subject: Just another day at work.
Where: Oxsridge House, Barkley Square, London.
Who: Xavière Sevin, a French immigrant.
Warnings: None.
Open to: Aimé Laurent.

Within the Oxsridge House, Xavière didn't feel so out of place. The servants, though chatty here, were composed enough not to snicker behind her back nor disheveled her about her lack of talking- she was a part-timer, and they took her for that. Currently she stood in one of the hallways, on her knees as she continued to move the damp cloth in a clockwise motion over the floor, dampening her own clothes as she did so, though almost unconcious to the feeling.

It was merely an hour after she had arrived in the house was she called upon to do an errand for one of the masters here, and the French woman gave a silent nod as she got up to pick up a few things that this master, Aimé Laurent, required. She had always liked being in the marketplace, moving to pick up things among the bustle of people, and so she was almost relieved to recieve such a task. Anything was better than wearing out her back and knees like this.

Returning with the necessary item not too long after she had set out to retrieve them, one of the elder servants guided her towards where the man was currently situated, and Xavière hesitantly placed a knock against the wood.

Aimé looked at her, at first offended – wondering if she’d not heard him or if she was being purposefully rude. Then another though dawned on him.
“Can you speak?” He asked.

It wasn't that she physically couldn't speak, Xavière reasoned with herself, it was that she couldn't. She wasn't lying if she agreed. Still, she felt uncomfortable for going along with things.

A nod was his response.

“Oh, Mademoiselle. I am so sorry!” Aimé said, searching around on his desk for his purse from which he took a few copper pennies, offering them to her. “Here, take these for your trouble. I should not have had you sent on such an errand if I’d know. It probably made the task harder than it had any need to be.”

Xavière shook her head with a warm smile on her face, keeping her hands to herself and making no move to accept the coins. Though she did need money, rounding up guilt was most certainly not the way to go about it. However, she was thankful, and it showed on the smile on her face.

"No, no. You really should take it. It's just extra money for a job well done." Aimé explained, smiling. He hoped this time she would take the money.

Another grateful bow of the head and Xavière nervously reached out to take the coins from his palm, one at a time, collecting them into her hand before balling it into a fist. She smiled up at the man- though it was rude to look a master in the eye, especially with her disposition as a woman, she was too straightforward.

"There!" Aimé said, sitting back in his chair, still smiling widely. "Thank you, for running that errand again. You can go back to work now." He gestured to the door, not wanting to sound dismissive but he was slightly uncomfortable with her mute silences.

Another thankful bow, a nod, and Xavière waved a small goodbye to the man before leaving the room, closing the door behind her and taking a deep breath. That was so close. She was so close to speaking.

Though, she couldn't help but take notice that Mr. Laurent was quite the kind gentleman.
