Patience Hurst: Thief! Thief!
Subject: Accosted by a thief.
Who: Patience Hurst
Where: A London shopping street
Warnings: Mild violence
Open To: Anyone

Patience loved shopping. If she were to make a list of her favourite things shopping would come second she decided after attending parties. She decided she liked parties the most as they gave her an excuse to shop and do other things she enjoyed. After all, the daughter of a prominent Lord could hardly be seen attending an engagement in a dress she had already worn out – and a new dress meant new ribbons, shoes and sometimes if the occasion called for it jewellery. She had already been to the ribbon shop and was on the way to her dress-makers. They had such beautiful fabrics in although since the problems in France had begun their patterns had become much less outrageous. Patience preferred it that way. Having seen what her cousin Angélique thought fashionable she was glad she had never had the inclination to spend a summer visiting in aunt and uncle at the French Court.

No doubt Angélique would wear something scandalous to her father’s ball.

Stopping to gaze at her reflection in a shop window Patience noted that she should by herself a parasol. It would hardly do for a lady of her station to become tanned and worse already the freckles upon the bridge of her nose were beginning to show. So intent was she on this worry and on considering how she would out-do Angélique without causing a scandal herself that she failed to notice the young man who had come to stand at the window besides her.

In one quick moment he had gone from gazing in at the display to grabbing Patience’s little purse, and all the money she had brought for her shopping tip, shoving the young girl off balancing and run off into the crowded street. Patience fell, screaming, onto the dirty dusty path – embarrassed and horrified, able to already feel tears from the shock welling up in her eyes.

“Stop him! Someone stop him” She screamed. “Thief! Thief!”

Antoine had been out on the town that morning, making sure to order a few new coats for himself and Aimé. He couldn't have people looking at them badly because they wore out dated clothing. It wouldn't help them achieve their goal at all. His mind on the items that he'd purchased and making a mental note to tell the servants to be expecting them. It would be a surprise for his brother - he hadn't even told him about them, but he was in the mood to be nice, so he knew that Aimé wouldn't complain.

Lost in his own little world as he was, he wasn't really paying attention to the patrons on either side of him. He'd passed by the store window and was almost to the store that he was going to patronize for his next purchase when he heard the young girl scream.

Turning to see what was the cause of the ruckus, he spotted a girl that had been knocked down - she looked very familiar, but he couldn't figure out why - and realized that the boy running in his direction had stolen her purse. Without thinking about it, he reverted to his old habits and extended his leg to trip the boy.

When he was on the ground, Antoine used his weight to take the bag back from him. Pressing his weight into him, he waited until the boy stopped fighting back before standing up. "Do not ever accost a young lady again." Ignoring him now that his point was made, he carried the purse back to the girl and extended his hand to help her up.

Patience had no idea what was happening around her. She sat, sniffling, on the pavement, trying to brush the tears from her eyes but her handkerchief had been in her purse and she knew already she must look a state. Patience couldn’t believe no-one on the street had stopped to help her, she could hear people whispering and she knew they had stopped but no-one had come to her aid. It was a sign of the decay of society as her father always said but that was no comfort to her now.

She looked up hearing footsteps nearing her, blink back her tears in surprise and she took the man's hand, letting him help pull her up.
"My purse." She said, looking from it to the man. "Thank you. How did you ever get it back?"

Angélique had been on her way to yet another perfectly dreary English shop when a familiar voice had begun screaming. She slipped through the crowd of people, many of whom seemed intent on ignoring the debacle and gasped as she saw Patience being helped to her feet by a stranger- a handsome one. Who seemed to have retaken posession of Patience's purse from a little ruffian who was busy scrambling to his feet.

Ange's lips parted in shock. Of course Patience would have the luck to be rescued by someone dashing. Ugh.

"Oh, darling!" she cried, rushing over to her cousin's aid. "Patience, cherie, you are not hurt are you?" No blackened eyes or unsightly scratches to go with a ballgown? "I was down the street and I thought it looked like you but then you cried out and I knew at once it must be. Oh, your dress! How unfortunate. But look, you had a hero so close at hand." She smiled at Antoine, thinking he looked rather like someone she knew.

Now Patience knew she must be utterly distressed for her first thought as seeing Angélique was not to be horrfied by being seen in such a state but to be overcome with delight at a face she knew.

“No, no nothing.” She murmured softly, touching her face. He had only pushed her, not hit out at her and though she might have some bruises from the fall Angélique was unlikely to see them. At the mention of her hero she turned to look at the man again, smiling at him. Reaching for her purse she took out her small lace handkerchief, dabbing at her eyes with it. Her rescuer was so handsome but he must think her a little fool for going all to pieces like this, or else he was a gentleman and simply saw a young woman in need of protection. She rather hoped the latter.

“I am so sorry. Where are my manners? Thank you so much for saving me and for finding my purse. I am Miss Patience Hurst and this is my cousin Angélique Worthington. Might with have the pleasure of your name? I’m sure my father, Lord Hurst, will want to reward you, sir.”

Before Antoine could reply to her question, a pretty woman came rushing over to her. Watching the interaction between them, Antoine knew they were related even before the girl who's purse he had rescued made that clear.

Now he knew why she looked so familiar. She was Lord Hurst's daughter. Now, wasn't that a nice little change to things? He would have to remember to tell Aimé that he had played hero to his patron's daughter. That should be interesting. And, while she was young, she was rather pretty so at least there was that.

Bowing to both of the women, he took Patience's hand and pressed a kiss to it. A rather courtly gesture, he had always thought, but it did seem to make women smile. "I am Antoine Laurent, my lady. It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Miss Hurst." Perhaps this encounter would serve a point after all. Getting on Lord Hurst's good side was a very good thing, as far as he was concerned. "No reward is required, my lady, I'm simply happy to be able to return your belongings to you." His French accent slid through the words, making the simple words seem even more exotic than they were.

Patience brushed her hair back from her face, feeling a little foolish for having not remembered the man. She realised now she’d seen him before at her father’s parties and his brother, Aimé, was constantly visiting them although she didn’t know why. He hardly spent any time with Charles who was closest to his age so it couldn’t be to foster a friendship between those two. Her father though seemed to have taken quite a shine to him though. She supposed they must talk about some sort of business she would find terribly dull.

She blushed, giggling a little as he kissed her hand. A gentleman indeed, and French too but obviously a better class of French that Anqélique.
“Oh no, you must have something.” She said hurriedly, worried he would leave. She had been so rude to not remember. “It’s only a short walk to our town house. You should come and take tea with us. I’m sure daddy will want to hear all about your heroics.”

Antoine knew when the light clicked on for Patience, when she knew who he was. Aimé had said that Lord Hurst's children were rather nice to him - he often wondered how it was that Patience and her siblings didn't figure out what Aimé was there for. But, that was a thought for later.

"Well, Mademoiselle Hurst, I will be happy to accompany such a beautiful young lady to her home. It would make me feel better to know that you are safe and arrive at your home with all of your things." Extending his arm for her - yet another of those gestures that he had been taught from an early age and knew how to use to his advantage.

"Are you sure that I will not be imposing on your family for tea? I wouldn't dream of putting anyone out." He would rather like to see Lord Hurst's face when he learned about what had happened to his daughter - and who had played hero. So many people viewed him as unfit, a horrible member of society (at least the ones that knew about Aimé, anyway) so that would be a pleasant surprise.

Patience giggled, face flushed as he took her arm. She felt she ought to say something about him not being a family member, or not having asked her father’s permission and how people would think they were stepping out together but all she could think about was the fact that a handsome man was escorting her home.

“Oh no, not imposing at all.” She promised, glancing over her shoulder at her cousin. “Will you be coming to tea too, Angélique?”

Angel kept herself quiet for a time, observing her cousin and the charming Antoine. Laurent... she knew that name, didn't she? Oh, yes of course! Aimé. And they did look rather as if they would be related, too. Brothers, perhaps?

"Oh, yes, your father is at home today, isn't he?" Angel said as if she'd forgotten, with a small smile spreading over her face as Antoine and Patience linked arms. She thought vaguely of the scandalous whispers that had touched on the Laurents in Versailles. Not that Aimé wasn't just a sweet darling of course, but to have Patience soooo smitten with the elder brother and taking his arm in public...

"I think I shall leave you, dearest, just for a bit. Monsieur Laurent is more than capable of getting you home, I think. But I will be by to check on you later this evening. I'm sure after such a shock, you won't have any desire to go out tonight."

"Mhmm, yes he is. He's looking over is work papers - there's a vote tomorrow and he wants to have everything straight in his head." Patience said, although she didn't look at Angélique but instead gazed up at Antoine, smiling.

"I look forward to seeing you then, Angélique. I'm sure we will have much to discuss."
