Window Shopping
Subject: Window Shopping, Or Constance is out for a leisurely stroll through town
Who: Constance Mosley
Where: Downtown London, not far from Isabel's House, close to the Market as well.
Warnings: None, yet
Open to: Ann Wayland, but others should they want

It was a nice day and Constance was glad for the time to just get out and stroll. She even forwent the carriage and preferred walking down the sidewalk.

She was still a vision, even in dark blue and black, something rather understated but she looked beautiful and it offset her red hair wonderfully.

The city streets were very busy and she rather liked the hustle and bustle of it all. Constance would be meeting with Harry soon enough but there was time and place for that.

She didn't have a true destination but rather just enjoyed seeing what there was to be seen, and engaging in lots of people watching as well.

Nell new Constance Mosely by sight but had never thought to speak to her before today. Everything Harry had told him - about the meeting and Constance's promise to help - had made him consider that he really should talk to her, if only to thank her.

He was out running errands, fetching a few new things Harry had suggested for the theatre and spotted Miss Constance window-shopping herself. He wasn't quite sure how one introduced themselves properly. He knew Miss Constance came from good-stock and she might be offended if he didn't know how to approach a woman unaccompanied. But at the same time she ran a very profitable brothel so she might not be so worried about informalities.

"Miss Constance." He called, stepping across the street to greet her. Partly to thank her and partly because he couldn’t quite believe Harry would have visited her and formed such a profitable relationship without it having become something more than a business venture. Miss Constance was a very attractive woman.

Constance was pondering whether or not she needed bolts of the green satin in the window. It would make beautiful garments for the girls and for herself but her practical side was pushing forward and she just stood and looked at it, and the other things in the window. Right then she was content to look and not buy.

"Yes?"

She smiled as someone called her name and she turned around to find herself face to face with Nell Abbott. She knew him immediately though it had been a bit since she'd seen him. He was as beautiful a boy as she remember Constance thought to herself. "Hello Nell. Fancy meeting you here of all places."

Nell was quite surprised Miss Constance knew his name. He couldn't remember when they had been introduced but reasoned that if he knew of her then it was not unthinkable that she knew of him.

"I've been running a few errands, Miss. Delivering letters for Harry and Mr. Belmont." He said earnestly. "Harry told me about the meeting he had with you. I wanted to say thank you, for offering your support. I know Harry wouldn't say it properly but this is important to him."

She smiled at him and turned completely to face him. It might have been a bit forward just to be so informal with him but she knew Harry's boys even if many of them she hadn't officially met.

It was her turn be a bit surprised. Harry had told them of the meeting. It just didn't cross her mind that he would but then again, they were possibly in danger, they should know. "You're welcome. Like I told him, we haven't always gotten along, but some things require looking past. And it is important to me too."

She smiled charmingly at a few of the people who passed. What a sight they must be for those who had any inkling. But Constance cared not.

"Have things been okay lately? I meet with Harry soon but I haven't heard anything... unusual as of late. Is everyone alright?"

Nell had never been sure why there should be a rivalry between Miss Constance and Harry. She dealt with girls and him with boys and they both seemed to make a tidy profit from it but he supposed it could be as simple as the nature of their business being too close.

"Everyone seems to be. There's a new boy working with us and Harry was a little worried to start with - thinking he could be one of Slater's lot but he's harmless and rather nice, although scared but weren't we all when we started working?" He said.

His curiosity piqued he couldn’t help but ask. “Meeting again? To go over plans and things, yes?”

"I'm glad things aren't too tense for you all then. I have the girl being careful but I refuse to run around being scared. And it's funny you say there's a new boy at the Theatre. I might have a new girl coming to work for me as well. She's a bit scared too, but you're right. We all were at one time."

Constance smiled at him and nodded. "We want to be on the same page with things, be stronger than anyone expects us to be." She fanned herself dramatically. "After all, I am just a dainty little woman who doesn't know about such things." She laughed; couldn't help it because Constance was many things, but dainty wasn't one of them.

Nell didn't know much about Miss Constance but he knew she was no fool. She was a shrewd business woman.
"It's nice to have an act, isn't it? People don't see behind you being a girl or me being...well, me."

"Harry's been taking me to appointments, or when he can't Will has but so far I've not heard of Slater coming round to see any of the other boy's so I suppose that makes sense." Nell wondered how much Constance told her girls about the problems in the future. He knew Harry hadn't confided in any of the other boys - in Will and his gang, yes, but Nell was the only one who knew just what was shaping up to happen.

"Yes it is indeed. What is the fun if everyone knows everything about us? Keep them guessing, that's what I always say."

She nodded. She wouldn't put it past Slater to try dirty tricks if they suited him. "I've told the girls there is trouble brewing but not to the extent yet. I don't want them going out alone, just to be safe."

Constance looked at Nell. "How much has Harry told you exactly?" She didn't want to step on Harry's toes; if he'd kept things from his boys, she didn't want to interfere with it.

"That there's going to be a fight...or something like that but secretive, and that he's going to finish Slater and his son so there isn't anyone left to take over." Nell said, confident that that was all that had to be said, although then he became worried she didn't mean about the problems with Slater but something else, something more personal maybe. "Why?"

Constance nodded. It would come to that there was really no other choice. "It will be swift and take care of them so it doesn't drag out, so more people aren't hurt." She smiled at him, not wanting him to worry. "Oh it's nothing, don't worry love, we'll be alright. Everything will. Harry won't let anything happen to you lot, and I won't let anything happen to my girls. I just... I know Slater and know he won't back down easily, that's all."

Nell nodded. He couldn't say he knew Slater exactly but the times he'd met him and the stories he'd heard didn't exactly fill him with hope that the man would walk away and leave them all alone. "I know everything will be fine." He said, although he wasn't sure if he felt that way exactly.

Constance smiled and nodded. Nell knew a lot of what was going on but there was no need to scare him further. "Things do have a way of working themselves out Nell. I'm not saying there won't be trouble nor be better right away, but I have not gotten through life thus far by being a complete pessimist." Constance knew when to be cautious and was not known for being stupid. And she wanted to try and allay some of Nell's fears too. "Besides fighting Harry is one thing," she said lower her voice a bit, "and going against me is another. But both of us together? Now, don't we like the odds, just a little bit more?"

Nell nodded. He'd felt safer wih the idea that Constance and Harry had joined forces. Harry knew how to streat fight but Miss Constance still had contacts in the upper-classes Harry couldn't hope to muster. She could bring Slater and his gang down with a few well placed letters to good friends he was sure.

"We do." He agreed. "Harry always speaks very highly of you."

She couldn't hide the surprise she was sure and just smiled at Nell. "Does he really now? Well I dare say that I could say a great number of highly placed things about Harry Fisher too," she replied, clasping her hands in front her. "Only don't tell him I said that. Might make him get a fat head or something," Constance added, grinning, her eyes teasing.

"Oh yes. He says you run your business well and take care of your girls. I don't think there's any higher form of praise as far as Harry's concerned." Nell said, watching her intently. She seemed surprised and flattered, but not giddy or too interested. He knew he shouldn't suspect anything more than a business relationship, Harry was hardly in the mind to pursue romance when something as important as finally ridding himself of Slater was on the table but all the same he couldn't help but notice Constance was very young, very pretty and a powerful lady in her own right.

She might not be titled but Harry might be happy to buy a title and cement a strong business relationship in the marriage bad with Constance instead.

"Well from what I know of Harry, that is quite high praise indeed." She smiled and felt it a fortuitous day already. Constance leaned down a bit, almost conspiratorially with Nell. "I'll tell you a secret Nell. I rather admire Harry's business sense as well. And one can tell just by looking at you boys that he takes very good care of you too. There's some business he does I don't like it's true but where it comes to the Theatre, he does well. Very well."

Constance didn't know where the flood of compliments for one Harry Fisher had come from but she also didn't mind it either. It was clear she needed drink she thought to herself, but smiled at Nell.

Nell bit his lip, worried now she sounded so sweet on Harry. There could be something more than then either of them might be willing to admit.
"Harry does take care of us, yes." He said with feeling. "And we're loyal in return. I would never let anything or anyone hurt Harry, or take him away from us."

Constance smiled at Nell. He sounded different and she feared she said something wrong. Thinking back on what she'd said and then it dawned on her. Could she have sounded more like a lovestruck girl? That wouldn't do. Not at all.

She patted him on the arm. "Oh I have no doubt Nell. Someone would have to be quite foolish to hurt Harry or think about taking any of you away from the theatre or him. Very foolish indeed." There she could fix all that right. No need to make Nell have to worry, about that at least.

Good, she thought to herself. She and Harry had a business relationship and that is all so no need worrying Nell or anyone else that it might be anything else.

She smiled at him. "Have you finished your errands? Or would you walk with me for a bit so we can keep talking?"

"I have finished, Miss but I can walk with you for a little, I don't have to be back at the theatre for a while." He said. Harry hadn't told him not to dawdle so Nell felt he could spend a small amount of time with Miss Constance.

"Good." She turned and started along the street once again, this time with Nell along side her. "I promise I will not keep you too long nor make you late."

The swish of her skirts was soft against the ground and despite not being overly tall, she still was a presence to see. But she paid no attention to the the almost gawking of some. "So Nell. What do you all have coming up in the Theatre? I am led to believe that you are doing Shakespeare at the moment?"

"Yes we are." He said, his dislike for the plays they were performing quite evident in his voice. "But myself and one of the other boy's have had an idea to try something new - an Arabian Nights themed play with dancing and things like that. I think our clientele will enjoy it much more. After all, everywhere does Shakespeare and we're not brilliant at it."

Constance laughed cheerfully. "You don't like Shakespeare very much do you?" She grinned at him. "I have to say, I don't blame you. I love to read it on occasion but I also think there are far more interesting things too."

She paused at one of the fruit stands and picked up an apple and offered it to Nell. "For keeping me company this late morning?"

“No, I don’t.” Nell said, delighted that she seemed to dislike it to. “I just feel like Harry is trying to make us something we aren’t. You understand? I know why people come to the theatre and it isn’t for fine acting. They want a little titillation, something they can’t get at any other whore house before they come and see us personally. I just worry Harry’s forgetting that.”

Nell wasn’t one to turn down free food, or free anything if the truth be told.
“Thank you, Miss Constance.”

She smiled and gave him the apple before grabbing one of her own and paying the merchant before they continued on their way. "And I do understand Nell. You don't want to be something you're not, right? You seem to have a very good grasp of things, of what you're offering at the Theatre. Have you told Harry? Maybe I'm mistaken but if you tell him, just as you've told me, I can't imagine that he wouldn't at least listen."

They kept walking down the street and Constance turned, indirectly heading toward the Theatre to eventually get Nell there so he wouldn't be tardy.

"And Arabian Nights... it's a wonderful story. I'm sure you all would be brilliant in it," Constance said happily.

"I have told Harry. He says he wants to make me a real actor." Nell said, frowning. Nell didn't have any aspirations quite as high as becoming the star of a proper theatre. He was more than happy to be what he was now - the most popular whore in their little slice of London.

"I hope so. The new boy's going to teach me to dance."

Constance smiled. She knew what it was like, having expectations of others interfering with what you wanted to do with yourself and your life.

"Ultimately it is your decision Nell. You just have to be strong in what you say and how you say it. Does that make sense? I'm sure Harry only has your best interest at heart. But who knows. If you all do the Arabian Nights and it's spectacular, he might just change his mind, right?" she added with a grin.

"I hope so too, Nell. I do." Constance smiled and nodded, happy to see him so determined. "Evander, the new boy I presume, I hope he does a good job with you all. I should like to hear rave reviews coming from your Theatre."

She paused suddenly as she remembered something. "Oh, I almost forgot. The girls have several dresses, costumes that they have outgrown or no longer need. Now they are in wonderful condition and I thought perhaps the Theatre could use them? I'd hate for them to just end up in trunks or worse. Consider it a donation to the arts," Constance said laughing. "Would you like them Nell?"

"Oh, I'm sure there will be. Evander is sweet." He said, turning down the street towards the theatre. Glancing up at Constance as she spoke he smiled. "New costumes? I think we'd be delighted to take them off your hands, Miss Constance. We could always use new costumes."

At least he could. He loved the idea of a new dress, especially something as beautiful as the outfits the girls at Isabel's house wore.

"That's good to hear as well. After all this encouragement, perhaps I'll have to sneak into a show," she laughed.

"Oh good I'd hoped you'd like the idea. I'm sure the girls will be so much happier knowing they'll be put to use on stage. I'm not sure just how many but give me a few days to let the girls get them together, and I'll have them delivered to the theatre. Is that alright by you?"

Constance was happy to see that he liked the idea. The girls had lovely costumes and dresses but they either outgrew them or just out wore them. And it was a shame not to let them be used where they could be too.

Normally Nell would have been embarrassed at the idea of a woman coming to the theatre to watch one of their shows, but Miss Constance was not a normal woman – she would understand what happened there and wouldn’t be horrified by it.
“I’m sure Harry wouldn’t mind reserving a seat for you.”

Constance grinned at the offer and deep down was very honoured he's said it. "If you get the Arabian Nights up and being performed, then I will happily come and watch you all."

She thought a moment and took an educated guess. "I'm not entirely sure, maybe 8-10 perhaps? I don't think it will be more than a few days before we can get them to you."

It was Will who answered the door, peering out at Nell, and the woman next to him. It was impossible not to recognise the Madame of Isabel's House. He opened the door quickly, letting them both inside. "Miss Constance..." He greeted, worried that something had happened, something had gone on with Slater's gang and Nell and none of Harry's lot were ready for it all to kick off just yet.

He paused, looking back at the pair of them as he shut and re-bolted the door. "Harry's been wondering where you've been." He explained to Nell, before looking to their guest. He didn't often have women come to the Theatre, not even those in the same business, "What can I do for you, Miss?"

Constance smiled at Will as he opened the door and let them inside. "Hello Will."

It hadn't changed much from when she was younger, sneaking around and trying to catch a peek inside.

"Yes," she said, playing along. "It was just fortuitous that I came across Nell on my way and he was kind enough to escort me the rest of the way. Who knows what dangers the streets can be frought with." She smiled more at him as they moved further inside.

"Those dangers, Miss Constance, tend to follow Nell about." He said, smiling at her over the boy's head. "But I'm certain little Nell did you a good turn. Heart as big as anything, that one."

He glanced down to Nell briefly, although the smile on his face was slightly less enthusiastic. He hadn't been able to forgive Nell yet for refusing his quite reasonable advances. "Miss Constance can find her way to Harry herself, Nell. He's watching a rehearsal of some sort. I'd like a word or two with you."
