Fabian Burnbridge: Dinner
Subject: Supper
Who: Fabian Burnbridge
Where: The Judge’s House
Warnings: None
Open to: Augustus Burnbridge, Georgina Rochester

It wasn’t often that his uncle invited friend to dine with them, or that Fabian was well enough to attend when a guest came to dinner. Mrs. Rochester was a very fine woman according to his uncle’s previous comments on her – a widow with two children, both much older than Fabian and to tell the truth he had been expecting a woman very different to the one his uncle had introduced.

Fabian dipped his spoon into the bowl of soup, beef as it happened, it helped to keep his strength up, and glanced at her and his uncle, watching them together carefully. He’d thought as a widow Mrs. Rochester might be dowdy and in mourning but she seemed quite upbeat and her clothing was brighter than anything Fabian had ever been permitted. He wondered how long Mrs. Rochester had been widowed but he had no idea how long one had to mourn for. It seemed the whole household was still in morning for his own mother and it had been sixteen years.

He’d also wondered about his uncle’s decision to invite her to dine with them. He’d considered maybe it had something to do with a case but watching them together Fabian began to consider that perhaps he had invited Mrs. Rochester here for himself.

Smiling to himself Fabian took a sip of the soup. It was very good, but the cook always did excel himself when Judge Augustus dined at home and he was allowed to deviate from the strict, rationed diet Fabian ate.

Georgina took her napkin from her lap and dabbed discreetly at the corners of her mouth, not wanting to ruin any of her make-up. When Augustus had told her his nephew would be joining them for the evening she had been expecting someone much younger, especially considering Augustus’s descriptions of his illnesses. It was a testimony to his uncle’s good care that the boy had lived so long, she was sure.

“The soup is delicious. You must remind me to ask your chef for the recipe so I may have some made for myself. I’m sure it is very restorative.” She said, laying the napkin back down in her lap.

Everything in the home was ordered, she had noticed and practical, very much like Augustus himself. Katherine was such a serious young woman, perhaps she had made a mistake settling on Gaultier as Katherine’s future husband when there were much more agreeable, and well titled, men about.

"I shall tell him to give it to you, Georgina." Augustus smiled slightly, setting down his spoon next to his empty bowl. "I hope that the rest of our meal will be just as satisfactory." He said, "Our chef is very good, don't you agree, Fabian?”

“I heard Miles is working on his latest masterpiece. I should hope he’s soon going to stop writing scandalous crowd-pleasers and settle-down.” Augustus said, “Does he have a particularly favoured young-lady?”

He paused, reaching for the decanter. “May I pour you another glass, Georgina? I think it will go very well with the next course. Which happens to be roast, unless I’m very much mistaken.”

"Very good," Fabian agreed, finishing his own bowl, feeling as if he'd eaten more tonight than he had in a long time and there where still more courses.

He looked up in interest as Uncle Augustus mentioned writing.
"Your son writes novels, Mrs Rochester? Would I have read any of them?"

Georgina sighed, setting down her spoon and leaning back in her chair.
"No, no he doesn't. Not that he feels he can bring home or tell his mother about, but he hardly attracts the right sort of young lady at the moment with his silly scribbling."

She glanced at Fabian, smiling softly. "I doubt your uncle would keep such things in his library, but if you've ever read anything by M. Rochester then yes, you have. I'm afraid I've stopped reading them, they upset me so. The things he writes..."

"Another glass would be lovely." She answered, turning her attention back to Augustus, still surprised he had wanted to introduce her to his nephew.

"Perhaps, if I could be so bold, Georgina, I may have a word with the young man? Or even suggest to you one or two more than likely matches? There are several young ladies whose temperament and constitutions would make them ideal daughters-in-law." Augustus explained, pouring both himself another drink, and a half-glass for Fabian.

He couldn't help but smile at Fabian as Georgina explained about Miles' work. "I haven't read any of Miles' work since his first book, and I was not overly impressed. I do not think it is suitable reading for a young man of your health, Fabian. I doubt you would find it enjoyable. I think you would find it scandelous and shocking and not at all pleasent."

Fabian accepted the little half-glass, delighted his uncle had allowed him that small enjoyment. He had medicinal glasses of alcohol twice, sometimes three times a day, but those were prescribed by a doctor and tended to taste like a bouquet of flowers or were made of restoratives like poppy juice.

He took a sip of his drink, hiding his frown. He wished sometimes that his uncle allowed him to make his own mind up about what would be bad for his heart. Sometimes he thought his uncle used his ill health as an excuse to keep Fabian from things he disagreed with but then Mrs. Rochester sounded so upset when she talked about her son’s writing that he considered his uncle was probably correct about keeping the books away from him.

“I’m sorry your son writes those sorts of things, Mrs Rochester.” He said.

Georgina graced him with a wide smile.
"If you would be so kind, Augustus, I'm sure he would listen to you. You are a pillar of the community after all." She said, taking hold of her glass. "And I would certainly like to introduce him to a few more eligible ladies. I think those recommendations would be most welcome. If only we had been introduced when I was looking for a husband for my youngest, Katherine."

Yes, it was a pity they had met so soon afterward and Katherine was already engaged. Georgina could hardly call off the engagement, it would be obvious social-climbing on her part and once Katherine had accepted it would seem very undecided of her to change her mind this far along. Besides, Augustus had never hinted about wanting a wife.

She shook her head as if dismissing the subject from her mind.
"Thank you, Fabian. I know your uncle is lucky having such an obedient nephew. You'd never do anything to embarrass him like those books do me, I know that."

"I will try my hardest then to get your son to listen to me. I do fear, though, that if he will not listen to your reason and your good sence then I will have little more luck. But a frank talk man to man may help him order his priorities. Your son is not the Prince Regent, after all, and God save us if he was." He added, with a swallow of wine to accompany and reinforce his words. "And the time will soon come when I shall need to find Fabian a suitable young lady. Not for some years yet, but I already have my eyes open for viable candidates. I shall have to start inviting them to dinner."

"I am sure the gentleman to be Katherine's husband is a man of most fitting qualities, Georgina, you need not worry yourself. She is a strong woman capable of looking after herself, even if she must learn obidence soon once she is married." He says to her.

Fabian swallowed the wine in his glass far too fast, convulsing into a coughing fit. Marriage? His uncle was thinking of him and marriage? But his heart would never stand falling in love and the things one did when married if it couldn't with-stand a walk around the garden.

He covered his mouth with a napkin, coughing into that until he had quite calmed himself.
"Sorry, I don't think I should have any more wine. It doesn't seem to agree with me." He said.

Georgina reached out to touch Augustus’s hand, smiling widely at him.
“I know he’ll listen to you, Augustus. And already looking for marriage prospects for Fabian? You have been planning ahead but I know you’d only consider the finest young women for him.”
In all honesty she doubted Fabian would make anyone a desired husband, he seemed too weak to be what any young woman would wish to marry but there was money here and a title. That would certainly bring any number of potential prospects.

She gasped as the boy began coughing violently, unsure what to do. Was he having some sort of fit? She glanced at Augustus.

"Don't worry, Georgina, Fabian will be fine." Augustus sighed, reaching over to pat the boy hard between the shoulder-blades, with his free hand reaching for a glass of water and handing it to his nephew. "You must not excite yourself, Fabian." He said, once the coughing had subsided. "Do you need to be excused and rest?"

"It will be several years yet until Fabian and I have to consider which young lady would be a most suitable bride, but there is no harm in planning ahead." He explained, smiling slightly at her, "And by that time I should hope that Fabian will be much stronger. Miles should be thankful for his health and take his duties more seriously."

Fabian shook his head, taking a sip of the glass of water and then a few deep breaths. It would be so embarrassing to have to leave and he wasn't feeling ill at all, only surprised. He hadn't even thought about marriage and he was quite grateful to hear his uncle say it wouldn't be soon at any rate.
"No, no. I'm fine." He said.

Georgina sighed a little. She had rather hoped for a moment that the boy would have to retire for the night and leave her and Augustus alone together, but no matter. They would be alone soon enough, in the library with a small glass of port and a warm fire and the boy would be in bed.

"Yes, Miles is as spoilt as those without any problems always are." She said softly.

"Perhaps after dinner you should go directly to bed, Fabian. I think it would be best if we do not over-exert you." Augustus said, topping off the boy's glass of water again. "Tomorrow you will need all your strength and concertration for your tutoring."

The next course was brought into the dining room at that point. "Ah, prefect timing." Augustus smiled, as the plates were set down before them. "Please, Georgina, tell me what you think. Finest duck." He said. "As for Miles, as I say, I will speak to him. How much good it will do I do not know, but if he continues in such a manner he will have a great many problems, and I am afraid you and Katherine will share them through association. It's a very good thing that Katherine will be married so soon."

Fabian grabbed his fork, stabbing into the duck and he ate quietly. He knew he would probably have been sent to bed - he was sure Mrs Rochester was here to spend time with his uncle now and he was confused about how he felt about that but being dismissed, even if it was for his own health, hurt.

He couldn't believe his uncle the sort of man to have a mistress. He'd always seemed so untouchable. Really, Fabian thought, he should be greatful. They had been locked away for far too long.

"Yes, that is good; Katherine needs to get away from his influence." Georgina said softly, taking a bite of the duck and she licked her lips. "Another delicacy. Your chef is wonderful, Augustus. If I wasn't so honest I'd try to steal him from you."

“I do worry so much. If he keeps on, with these books of his getting worse and worse, that I’ll not be able to show my face in society anymore.”

"Don't eat so fast, Fabian. You'll do yourself another injury." Augustus commented to the boy, "We're not sending you to bed like a naughty child. We're following the doctor's orders, you know that."

He reached over the table to Georgina, hand resting over her own, unaware of his nephew's private thoughts on their relationship. "Don't worry yourself, Georgina. I shall speak to him presently and all will be well. No doubt these books of his are merely a left-over of over-imaginative youth. Once he realises he is no longer a child, but a man, he will behave as he ought."

"I do know, Uncle." He said, cutting the duck up into smaller pieces and stirring it in the rich, warm source that was coating the plate and potatoes, nibbling at it. "I just wish I could stay up a little later, but I know I'll feel worse for it tomorrow"

Sometimes he wished they could at least try a few of these taxing things but the fear of what might happen to him if they did, the prospect of his health worsening prevented Fabian for pushing to hard.

Georgina felt instantly better as he took her hand and she glanced at him, smiling. It was hardly true that they weren't sending him to bed. If Fabian didn't have his illness as an excuse then she was sure Augustus would have found another. He had been quite insistent about showing her the fabulous rug his father had brought back for the orient and having her on it.

“I’m certain with your guidance he’ll realise that sooner than later.”

"I'm glad you understand, Fabian." He said to the boy, smiling slightly and turning his attention back to his meal, taking a swallow from his wine-glass. "Taking care of you is not always the easiest of duties, for either of us. But I'm glad you have taken some of the responcibility onto yourself."

Augustus offered their guest a faint smile as she spoke, "Georgina, you flater my abilities. But thank you. And if all else fails, you could simply threaten to disown him if he continues to write such terrible books."

Fully chastised Fabian set down his fork, unable to stomach the idea of another bite. He knew it must be difficult for his uncle to look after him, and that he must be a constant reminder of Lucy and her death, and the man who ruined her but he didn't want to be treated like a burden. He didn't choose to be ill constantly.

"I think I might go to bed, Uncle," He muttered.

Georgina gasped.
"Disown him? Augustus, I couldn't! He's my son and how would that look to everyone? I would have failed as a mother and Percy, rest his soul, as a father if we couldn't curb this silly writing obsession. And who would look after me in my old age? It would hardly be right to impose on Katherine and her husband." She sat back in her chair, surprised he could suggest that although she knew it might one day have to be a decision she made, although Miles could be a good boy. She shouldn't make such fuss about his writing; it gave everyone the wrong impression of him.

"Miles isn't a bad son." She said, twisting her wedding ring round her finger agitatedly. "It's simply that with what happened to his father he's been hurt and he feels this is a way to reveal the hypocrisies of our society. I don't agree with him but I can see why he does it. He needs a strong influence like his father to lead him towards a more productive outlet"

Georgina glanced across the table at Fabian, startled by his sudden change in temperament. Maybe everything wasn’t so well-run in Augustus’s household as she had supposed, or maybe it was simply that he was touched like his mother had been and prone to temper-tantrums when reprimanded. Augustus was such a good man to take care of him.
