Harsh Reality
Subject: Harsh Reality
Who: Evander Rycroft
Where: Bridge Theatre
Warnings: violence but not bad
Open to: Harry's boys

As he stepped onto solid ground again, Evander looked around. It was much different from Cordoba, from the hustle and bustle to the sights and smell. Yes London was definitely different. He picked up his trunk by its handle and kept his satchel close to him, concealed beneath the larger tunic he wore as he started walking away from the waterfront and headed north.

He watched the other people around him, feeling them stare at him. It wasn't too surprising. He was dressed very differently and he wondered if some of them were trying to figure out where he'd come from and what he was doing there. He smiled and said hello or good day to most and couldn't help but be a bit awe-struck as he walked through downtown London.

It reminded him of the market with everyone moving every which way and doing all manners of business even as the early evening set in. Evander stopped at the bakery, unable to resist the smell of the fresh rolls. Luckily he had some expendable money and eager snacked on the warm bread, continuing on his way.

"Well well, what have we here."

The voice came from behind him and he turned to see two boys, not much older than him it seemed, glaring at him. He tried not to panic and turned away heading down a side street which turned out to be an alley (beside the Bridge Theatre but he didn't know that). He looked at them again. "What do you want?" he asked, his accent a bit English, plus Irish brogue and the lit on some words of Spanish as well.

"Don't mind us, we're just the welcoming committee," the older ones said, both still advancing on Evander. "And it looks like you're in a good need of welcoming too."

Gripping the handle of his trunk more, Evander shook his head. "Thank you but no, I'm fine, and must be going."

But they were quick. The first punch stunned him but only for a moment. Evander dropped the last of the roll to the ground as his hand went to his face. He swung the trunk out at them, catching the younger in the side. The first one grabbed at him, hitting him again, so hard it made Evander's eyes water. He wasn't defenseless and from the pocket of his satchel, he pulled a dagger and struck at the two boys. He dropped his trunk against the wall behind him and caught one on the arm while the other kept coming. Evander's face hurt and he knew he was likely bruised and definitely bleeding.

Suddenly there was a whistle and a policeman coming down the street. Evander hid the dagger swiftly, backing up again to his trunk and grabbing it as he took off. He didn't need the authorities or dealing with questions they'd have, not yet.

He found a door in the back of the building and tried it. With some doing, it came open and he pulled it shut quickly. It was kind of dark. He couldn't tell if it was a warehouse or not. Maybe it was abandoned, and he could just rest, for a little bit. He set his trunk down under the stairs by a window and barely sat down on it before he passed out.

Robin was all better from his cold, helped by Doctor Perkins a little original TLC from Nell which he hadn't quite gotten over. Harry didn't seem to have found the stolen liquor and for now Robin thought he was in the clear. He was wandering around the theatre, reciting his lines and not realising where he was going. His feet lead him all around the theatre, into the backstage area and down to the mainly unused passages behind.

Jaunting merrily as he spoke the lines aloud, Robin was oblivious to the sight of legs sprawled on the floor, the body of a boy hidden under the staircase leading back to the stage area. He had to do a double-take before he saw the shoes and immediately he assumed it was one of Harry's boys passed out or hurt. Robin moved around, beginning to chide whoever it was about how Harry would have something to say about this when Robin caught sight of the boy's bloodied face and he gasped. His first reaction was to step back and run but as he stumbled around for a better look his nerves seemed to settle and he realised he was probably in need of help. Reaching out to touch the boy, Robin shook him slightly.

"Oi.." he whispered, "you - ar.. are you alright?"

Robin was always disappearing off somewhere, which was more trouble than worth it for Nell and he was still unsure where he stood with Robin, especially after Sunday. Nell hoped Harry didn't find out about that - he wanted them to be friendly but, he was sure, not as much as all that.

"Robin?" He called. "Robin, where are you?"

Evander stirred a little bit and then moved back a little when he heard the boy's voice. He hurt all over and his face hurt even worse. He looked up at the other who'd almost tripped over him.

"I.....," he trailed off not sure what to say, disoriented and trying to stand up. Evander looked behind the first boy as the voice of another called out.

"I'm... sorry," Evander said as he still struggled to stand. "I didn't know anyone was here... didn't mean to trespass. I didn't... I...."

"Hey don't strain yourself, sit back down," said Robin, trying to help him by taking hold of his arms. He ignored Nell's calls for the moment but he knew he'd soon be here and faffing and trying to see what was going on. "You're - you're hurt... God you are hurt," he said, frowning when he saw the bruises on the other lad's face.

"Don't worry about trespassing just be careful... take it easy... I'm Robin.."

Nell stomped around backstage. He knew Robin must be here somewhere, he just couldn't seem to find him - not in the props or costumes. He almost missed the back passageway and the door under the stairs but then he thought if Robin was hiding from him what better place to go.

He saw the other boy crouched there and frowned.
"What are you doing here? If you're hiding from me I want to know why. Thought we were passed all this but if you're ashamed, your Lordship..." He trailed off as he saw the other boy there with Robin.

"What...what's happened to him?" He asked.

He was scared. He was in no condition to fight back again, not now. But it didn't mean he didn't try. Evander just wasn't steady enough to stay upright. His eye wasn't completely swollen shut so he looked up and could see the other boy next to.... Robin was it?

"Please don't hurt me.... I'll... I can pay for any damages to the door.... just had to... get away.... from them." It was difficult speaking with the split lip and oh what a sight he must be to these two. He coughed a bit, groaning as it made his head pound more and his whole body hurt even more too.

Robin rolled his eyes the moment he heard Nell's voice, then looked towards the injured boy again. "I dunno what happened Nell... but we're not going to hurt you," Robin assured the lad, "I promise - there's no damage apart from what's happened to you... were you mugged?"

He couldn't help but ask, looking both frightened and concerned. He saw the trunk and then raised his head back to the boy.

"Them?" Nell asked, stepping closer. "Do you think I should go fetch Harry?" He asked Robin, unused to dealing with this sort of thing. He always went to Harry about problems but Harry might not take kindly to the fact a random young man had found his way into the theatre, not with Slater hanging around and the trouble with Viv.

"No, no please don't. I don't want to... be anymore trouble."

Evander needed to get out of there before the person who owned the building, or the boys parents came around and hauled him off. "I.... they tried... to mug me I mean... but they didn't get anything.... except a few good shots at me."

He reached out, grabbed onto Nell first and then Robin, though he didn't know that WAS what their names were. "Don't turn me in," he pleaded. "I am sorry, I just came in here; it was the first place I could get away." He frowned as he could taste the blood on his lips and in his mouth. What he wanted was to just curl up for a long time.

"Don't worry," said Robin, patting the boy's arm. "You're safe now, there are no muggers and we are not going to turn you in," he added, giving a significant look to Nell. "You need to rest and get some water on your face - we have a spare room you can rest in..."

"I wasn't going to turn him in!" Nell said, angry that Robin could think such a thing about him and Harry by association. He slipped an arm under Evander's shoulder, helping him up a little. "Which room? And shouldn't we ask his name?"

Evander winced as second boy yelled at the first. "Please, don't be mad." He leaned on him as he struggled to his feet. "Any bed would be nice, any place," he said coughing more as he leaned against the other boy too.

"And my name's Dis- um.... Evander. Evander Rycroft." It was going to be hard for him, for a while to remember not to say 'Diyari" when asked his name.

"Evander, nice posh. Must be on of your lot." Nell commented to Robin. It would explain a lot - boy probably got lost and couldn't handle himself in a street fight. "Nell Abbot at your service," He said and then added because it wouldn't feel right if he didn't. "For a price."

He helped Robin carry the boy a little way and then ran ahead, searching out an empty room. He found one on his second try.
"Come on!"

Evander tried to smile and it came out a bit half-assed because of his lip. He leaned against Robin as he stood up, reaching for his trunk as he did so. He looked at the other boy "Nice to meet you both."

His hand brushed against the satchel under his tunic and nodded to Nell. "I can pay; I have money." Evander continued moving slowly with Robin as Nell ran ahead. Luckily it wasn't too long or far before an empty room was found and they all made their way inside. "If I could just clean up a bit and rest, just a little, you can take payment right away if you require it Sirs."

"Don't be daft!" said Robin immediately, frowning at Nell for putting the idea in Evander's head. As they entered the room he took Evander's trunk and set it down next to the bed, drawing the curtains from the tiny window at the side. He was very much like his mother right then.

"You don't have to pay us. You were in dire need of help and we're more than happy to oblige - aren't we Nell?"

"I didn't mean it like that!" Nell said, appalled. "I simply meant for other things in case...well, in case that was why he'd been in the neighbourhood."

"Yes we are. Happy to help. But only with making you better." He said sulkily.

Evander winced, not in pain, but because the boys seemed to be at odds with each other. He sat down on the bed wearily. "Please, don't fight. I'm sorry to be an inconvenience." He looked up at them both. "I just got into the city and was just wandering around looking... it's been a long time... and I didn't get lost, just... didn't pay attention to where I was." He wasn't sure they wanted an explanation and he hoped it didn't sound like an excuse because Evander learned his lesson about complaining and excuse making long ago.

Reaching out for Nell's hand, feeling like he was the more upset of the two, Evander tried to smile again. "You've more than helped enough already, so thank you." He looked to Robin too. "Thank to you both."

Well, that was unnecessary. Robin loked from Nell's hand to Evander and he attempted a smile, shrugging with his arms across his chest. "Well... can't have anyone dying on us, and we're not exactly the kid of lads who would just let you rot there. If you need anything just ask - water? Or you know, some food?"

Nell was quite taken aback when the boy reached for his hand. After all, he'd been quite awful during this whole rescue attempt - constantly misunderstanding and being misunderstood. But he squeezed the hand that gripped his and moved to sit besides him, reaching out to touch his mouth gently.

"We need to clean that up." He said, before glancing at Robin. "Alcohol and a cloth?"

He wasn't going to die, though he felt like it as he moved. "You are both very kind. Something to drink would be nice." Evander smiled through his cracked lip and reached for Robin's hand too. "Water would be fine. And... if you just have a clean cloth, and some decent water, I can clean up, make myself somewhat more decent. I wouldn't want to.... keep you from your evening."

It was so like Nell to latch on to the newest totty as soon as he showed him some kindness. It wasn't very appropriate to touch the other boy's mouth, was it? Not if it was hurt, and he resented the thought that Nell was going to simply order him about whilst he 'comforted' the new arrival, despite Evander taking his hand too.

"We've got nothing to do," Robin admitted, "so it's no trouble. I'll go grab you some supplies.." With a subtle squeeze of Evander's hand he exited the room as innocently as he could.

Nell smiled rather tenderly at the boy.
"We won't have anything to do until later; we were only supposed to be rehearsing."

He edged a little closer on the bed to Evander, looking at his face a little worriedly.
"Poor thing. All cut up."

Evander squeezed Robin's hand back and smiled as he left the room. It was strange for him, to have people taking care of things, not really wanting anything in return, or so it seems so far.

"Rehearsing? Are you actors?" he said, hoping Nell was not angry with him or the other boy. Evander did not like conflict and less of that the better.

He turned his head more and looked at the pretty boy. "I've had worse. Don't worry, I heal quickly. I'm sorry if I've gotten blood everywhere. I'll clean it up."

Robin went to the kitchens and worked his charm on the people in there so he could go about stealing meat and bread without much notice. He gathered enough to sustain the boy and then discreetly meandered back, wondering if Nell was busy snogging him yet.

When it appearaed that he wasn't, but still giving him the gooey eyes, Robin put his acting to the test and brightly swept in placing the food on the bed infront of Evander. "Right! I've brought you ham, and a little of the roasted chicken in case you don't like ham - some of the crusty loaf if you want bread, I couldn't manage to get butter, and there's water but I couldn't bring it back..."

"What other....."

Evander looked up as Robin came back. The food looked so good. "No this is all good, thank you. It's more than enough. Thank you Robin," Evander said, genuinely thankful for the kindness of them both.

"No it's okay. Is there water close? I can just go and wash my face a little, at least up and look somewhat better. I'm not worth the fuss or yelling I assure you. Like I told Nell, I've been worse." He started eating in small bites, his mouth hurting too much to open up too widely but glad for the food.

Robin fixed Nell first, moving to sit on the bed with a faux-happy type stare. "If you wanted the alcohol and cloth you can always go get it yourself, I had my arms full," he suggested, crossing his legs as he got himself settled. "There's a washroom down the hall we'll take you there in a bit."

"Other? Oh, we're whores." He said pointedly, glaring at Robin.

Evander had felt this way before only it had been two dipolmats gambing and wagerng very heatedly over who would take the wager, namely him. And he didn't like it now any more than he did then. He gathered the food up neatly. "Thank you for the food.," he started as he slowly tried to stand up steadiliy. "I will use the washroom and then go. I do not wish to upset either of you further."

He turned his head to Nell, pausing before he spoke softly. "You get paid. Be glad because some.... don't." Evander dropped his eyes to the floor as he tooks a few slow awkward steps as everything hurt. Part of him wished he was back in Cordoba because at least this wouldn't have happened and he'd be safe, though the other part just still couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he really wasn't a slave anymore either.

Robin looked at Nell, genuinely surprised. "I didn't ignore you - I just wanted to make sure he got his food..." he said, blinking then turned to Evander. "You don't have to leave, you're not exactly inconveniencing us, and you won't need to repay me..." he said gravely. "I know what it's like, as do all of the boys here, to lose your way and come on hard times..."

"Speak for yourself." Nell said, standing up. "Some of us this is the only life we've ever known and we're happy with it."

"I think I'll just excuse myself. Probably something else I could be doing." He said stiffly, deeply offended by the new boy's strange stance and words and by Robin. Well they could both act and think how they liked. Nell just didn't want to be apart to it.

Evander shook his head. He wished he felt better, this would have turned out better, he knew it. He would have taken them both and made things better. He liked them both very much, if for no other reason than they'd been nice to him. But neither had any idea what it was like, what he'd gone through, and losing their way or choosing, it was far better than what had happened to him.

"Hard times are one thing, and if you are happy that is another," Evander said, the annoyance in his voice even a surprise to himself. "But when you lose your way because you're taken from your family.... when you're forced to do what someone says because they now own you and your life is in their hands.... when you never choose to do it but must because you think of nothing but home...."

Evander's voice choked in his throat. His eyes grew wide and he knew he'd said too much It was wrong and he needed to leave. "You're far more lucky than you ever know," he whispered. He tried to hold himself tall as he tried to move to the door of the room, his footsteps barely noticeable.

Robin was touched by whatever emotion Evander was feeling and he hung his head. He was lucky, really, luckier than perhaps any of the boys at the theatre because he'd been born into money: he'd forsaken all of that, a life which many would kill to have, because of a quarrel with his father.

He allowed Evander to leave without another word, getting up and beginning to tidy up the room. He moved Evander's trunk, made himself busy. He did know what it was like to be made to do things against his will... but he hadn't been owned.

Nell on the other hand had no such feelings of sympathy. Who was this boy to come in here and spurn their kindness and act in such a way, telling them what to feel.

"I didn't realise you knew so much about my life or my choices. After all, if we're happy we can't possibly know what any of that's like." He said angrily. The things the boy had said had rubbed him the wrong way. "So what, looking for a job?"

Nell strode to the door, getting there before Evander and slipped out into the hallway, heading back to his own room. They were both imposable. He considered telling Harry but didn't want that hanging over him, and Harry didn't need any more problems.

Robin was welcome to whatever he thought Nell wanted from Evander, and Evander too could go jump in a river before Nell looked at him in that way.

Evander was so shocked he didn't know what to say. He was ashamed of his own angry and even more so that he'd insulted and hurt Nell. "No.. please..." he said as Nell pushed past him. "That's not what I meant," he added but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. He stood at the doorway and turned back to Robin. "I didn't mean.... I'm sorry..."

He walked into the hallway, seeing Nell go into what must've been his room. Evander looked from room to room as best he could until he found the wash room and shut the door. Looking into the mirror, he cringed. Caked blood was all down his face and he had quite the black eye and bruised cheek going. on. He found the basin and gently washed his face off, winced at the tender parts but finally looked half way decent. He sighed as he looked in the mirror again, willing himself over and over not to cry.

Nell could be so stupid - and horrid - sometimes and Robin tried to catch Evanders eyes to show it but he'd exited the room before Robin could manage it. Continuing to busy himself, Robin looked around to see what he could do: bed was made, albeit with crumbs all over the bed, no water just yet and no alcohol for the cuts... he didn't just want to leave Evander in the room though, he wanted to tell him what the deal was at the theatre.

Evander waited for a bit and then came back into the hallway and quietly came back into the extra room. "Thank you for your hospitality but I should go. I don't want to upset anyone further." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold coin and held it out. "Please take this as..... a thank you for your kindness, Robin."

He just wanted to go, find a room and lay down for a long long time. Evander wanted to change and clean up some more, and a decent meal wouldn't hurt either.

Robin refused the coin with a shake of his head. "I'd rather not be paid, Evander. If you don't want to stay then I haven't done my job properly in trying to make you comfortable enough to feel at home - at least okay to sleep. I can't blame you for wanting to go, though," he shrugged, sitting back on the bed.

"When I first got here I was afraid of everyone... but they're not so bad when you get to know them. Apart from Nell. He's generally as you take him," he chuckled. "I can direct you to a good spot for a nice lie down, though you'll have to pay for it. It might be a shade better than here but this is free so..."

"I just don't know what to do. Things are so messed up and I haven't been very good at expressing what I mean today."

He looked down at the floor. He honestly didn't want to move and if the offer.... "If it's all the same to you, and the offer still stands I..... can I still stay here? I don't want to get you into trouble, and it won't be long, but I would prefer not to leave here, just yet."

He made sure he got rid of that thought before he continued. "You can stay here. I'll make sure no-one finds you and even if they do I can try and smooth it over with Harry... Nell might not like it but he doesn't like much anyway." Robin gave the other boy an assuring smile.

Evander looked a little bit sad listening to Robin. He settled in on the bed and gave him a smile back. "I hope things are better now. This place seems nice for the most part." His face lit up a little more when Robin said that. "If you're sure it'll be okay, then thank you. I just don't want to get anyone, get you, into trouble."

"So what kind of place IS this anyway?" he asked genuinely curious.

"I'm sure Harry'll be fine with it and you're right, this isn't a bad place - just an odd one," he admitted, smiling brightly. "What this establishment is, really, is a 'service' to men... we get paid for, and depending on what the customer wants we get quite a bit. Nell is Harry's favourite and frankly more spoilt than the rest. He has an ego to match. I'm quite a new boy," he explained, "I... came here twelve months or so ago. I can't remember exactly... but I've done well, and I'm currently playing the lead in Romeo and Juliet! Cause we do plays as well, see..."

Evander smiled at Robin. "I hope you're right. And odd can be fun too," he said returning the happily smile to the other boy. He was admittedly surprised at what Robin said about the place. "So there are a few of you here, not just you and Nell? Evander relaxed a bit and settled back on the bed. "Maybe Nell has a reason. I do feel bad for upsetting him."

He looked up at Robin, his eyes wide. "You do plays? You're going to be Romeo? That's wonderful. I bet you are so good." Evander had read as much as he could while in Cordoba, amazing amounts of Shakespeare, and whatever else was in the vast libraries.
