the reunions never cease...
Subject: Mary meets an old friend.
Who: Mary, Slater
Where: somewhere in london
Warnings: Possible incest-y flirting, allusions to abuse, violence, murder, mayhem and other horrible things.
Open To: Slater

Mary had spent the day blissfully out of the house and out from under the watchful eyes of the housekeeper. She was half certain the lady was not only making a list of her deficiencies now, but was forming some dire suggestion to Harry which involved torture or chaperones. Possibly both. Mary had tried explaining that she was only staying with her brother for a little while, and she really didn't need to bother  so much about Mary's- well, everything and especially the dresses that Mary would have liked much better if they didn't make her look quite so much like her beloved doll Lady Jane- but she'd only been glowered at so severely she'd found herself fleeing to the safety of her room. She'd started to write a letter to Evonne- the usual mishmashed jumble of French and English- but had given up out of frustration and had decided to go to the park.

The park had reminded her of Lady Emilie which reminded her of the dinner she'd thought of having, which reminded her that she had meant to get Lady Emilie a pen with which to begin writing the epic play of the militant chaperones. She had gone to the shops at once, but the choosing of a proper pen led to the choosing of a proper little journal. Which was how Mary was wandering down this particular street dressed like a doll, a bit later than she strictly ought to when she knew Harry would be coming home this evening and it was all going to make her very late for dinner. He wasn't like to be too happy with that... She frowned. It wasn't too far, she could make it in time really...

"My oh my, I think I spy a bright little angel passing by..." Slater appeared from the shadows, having watched Mary walk for quite some time. It was a shame she was Harry's sister as that was a tie to his bitter rival he would have liked to cut - however Mary was such a sweetheart he could hardly shut her away or say no to the darling.

"Ello darlin..."

Mary gasped, stopping mid-step and spinning toward Slater's voice. Her smile was pure delight as she saw him, and a blush rose to her cheeks. "Mr Slater!" She only just restrained herself from flinging her arms around him as she used to when she was younger. A thousand questions flitted through her mind, but she kept herself to one: "How are you?"

He was quite disappointed that she hadn't hugged him, and so he moved to hug her instead. She was, after all, his little darling. For so many many years. "Hello lovely," he greeted her, breathing her in then stepped back to admire her. "It's been too long! I'm well, Mary, and you? You look fresh as a daisy. How's life treatin' you?"

Mary hugged Slater back with enough enthusiasm that the housekeeper would probably have boxed her ears on principle. "Oh, life's been so strange. I was workin' for Lord Stanley and he was chasin me through the house, so I thought of gettin a new job... I was going to go straight to you but a friend told me of a place closer by and who do you think was runnin' it? My brother, Harry. Ma told me he was dead! I'm stayin with him for a bit now while things get sorted...."

She thought of Harry's tirade about Slater the day they'd met and she looked at Slater worriedly. He didn't look any different- still the moustache and the light in his eyes. "What about you, though? Things still goin' alright?"

Slater's eyes darkened at the mention of a lusty Lord, and even more so when she spoke of Harry. So, she was working for him now instead of being where she belonged in Slater's rough yet kindly arms. She'd been there before, her pale skin being cuddled in her time of turmoil - that was where she was meant to be now and he found himself wishing her mother's words were true.

"Fisher, eh?... can't see what he'd want with you, Mary, he likes boys' business." His tone was sharp when he spoke of him but he lightened at her expression. "I'm all the better for seein' you, darlin'. Such a pretty sight is a gift for sore eyes. And mine are very sore!" he told her, patting her nose.

Mary winced at Slater's tone, and put her hand on his. "Oh, I'm not workin for him. He wrote to Lord Stanley to say I wasn't coming back, and had me come stay with him at his place is all. Guess he decided it was his brotherly duty." She shrugged, but her blush deepened as he patted her nose and she laughed. "You flatterer. It's just you ain't seen me in..." she paused, not quite sure when exactly she'd seen him last, "a fair few years anyway. I suppose I'm old enough to join your girls now?"

"Ar, that you are..." he told her, but he really didn't want her to be just one of his girls. She was too special, for some reason, and he wasn't going to have her be some common whore. "But you're better than that, Mary. You have dreams, don't you? Those others don't. Well, apart from a few stable means and a man what don't beat her up... it's been too many years but you aint changed at all. Still precious - I just wish you'd come to me, is all, instead of that dandy..."

She hadn't ever quite been sure why Slater wouldn't let her join the other girls when she got old enough- it sure wasn't out of concern for her virginity since he knew that tale right enough. But whatever the reason, it still held, it seemed. "I do. I might win a part in a play down on Drury soon." She didn't care who saw, she put her arms around Slater again, hugging him with a sure trust that most people with half a lick of sense wouldn't have dared with a man like him.

"I didn't want you to think I'd just be wanting something from you is all. You're busy enough with people always asking this and that."

"I could never say no to you, though," Slater told her, sliding his hands around her to return the half-hug. If anyone saw them they'd wonder what the hell was going on. "You have that very rare power over me - and don't you go abusing it. Wouldn't blame you if you did, though," he chuckled, jostling her a little. He really truly did care for the girl and he rubbed her back gently. "You'll get the part, don't you worry."

"Sure, you say that to all the girls," she laughed. Mary cocked her head to look up at Slater teasingly as his hands went round her waist. "Although I suppose that means if I asked you very sweetly for a lemon ice and the chance to hear what you've been up to lately, I'd be abusing you terribly..."

She giggled at his reassurance no the part. She wasn't about to say any more on that count- she wanted to get it by herself without anyone encouraging the director.

"No I don't - only you," he said genuinely. He wondered why she had such a fascination with him, or had become to attached, but he let those thoughts play out of his head. "I will gladly give you a lemon ice and a conversation. It don't cost me much and allows me to spend time with my favourite girl. So, young Mary, lead the way and tell me about this part you're going for.."

Mary's grin was pure joy and she slid to Slater's side and took his arm. "Gladly, Mr Slater. Your 'favorite girl' has missed you terribly. There's a spot just down the way here; I passed it going to the shops." She felt herself relax and let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She was more at ease than she'd been for a long time- Slater had been the safest spot in Mary's world. It didn't escape Mary that she likely owed Slater her life more than once over, and if he was dangerous, well, he wasn't the worst monster she'd met. Slater's cruelty was honest and she loved him for it.

She laughed. "The director asked me to read the handmaiden for him. A small part, but it would be good to start with." She laid her head on his shoulder for a moment as they walked, a sort of silent apology that she wasn't telling him absolutely everything right this moment. "I'll send you tickets if I get the spot... but you must tell me how you are. More'n business, mind."

Slater was widely known as dangerous, though few either failed or declined to recognise it. Those who failed to recognise it soon learnt their mistake, as did those who declined but in very different ways. Mary was an exception to those rules; she knew he was dangerous, but she just didn't care, and that was what made her so special. Keeping her close and almost flush to his body, Slater strolled along like he owned half of London - which he may as well have done.

"A handmaiden? Well it's a good a start as any," he agreed, head held high as he gave a few lurking men the evil eye. "I'd be glad to come and cheer you on on opening night - but I can't agree you'll wrangle everything out of me!"

"Oh, I never do. But trying is so much fun!" Mary laughed, happy to stay close to Slater, and nearly glowing when he held her closer. He was so warm, and it was far too easy to simply fall into step and into his orbit entirely. She'd never thought to fight it. Why didn't Harry understand, there were just rules was all. He and Slater would tussle and it'd be all right in the end. She pointed out their destination, oblivious to anyone else being anywhere near them.

"You look just the same, you know. So things must not be all bad. But you don't look happy," Mary said as she looked at Slater with a trace of worry. She wanted to reach up and touch his cheek, but knew better than that in public. wouldn't do to let the image get too soft. "So you can tell me that, if you'd like to," she requested softly.

Slater moved towards the shop, still smiling to have the girl at his side. At her observation that he did not look happy he paused, his expression fading as he looked down to her, brow furrowing in confusion. "I don't?" he asked, slowing their pace down. "Well then you just might have to try and cheer me up, eh?"

She hated seeing him look serious again- but she couldn't help it. She worried for him. Not that she was ever going to admit that to anyone- they'd never understand. Slater could take care of himself all right, but he didn't exactly get much time to breathe now did he, what with one thing and other? "I do plan on trying. I thought that was what you kept me around for." Her smile was wry. "I don't know what you've done without me," she added with a mock serious shake of her head. Going up on tip-toes, she kissed his cheek.

"Really why has it been so long? I can't remember anymore." Fact was, there were a lot of blank places where she was pretty sure she used to have memories, but it didn't do to admit that.

No, Slater couldn't breathe half the time. He was up to his neck in dealings and debts and strikings that he had to take care of. Sometimes it was nice just to take a stroll and that it was with Mary made it all the better. "I aint done well, let me tell you that. Positively pining!" he admitted, though possibly exaggerated it a little.

At her question he became quiet. "It's been long cause you went off and had yourself and cushy life, Mary, one which was respectable til you caught the ey o' that old dirty rotten Lord... want me to sort him out?"

"Oh, sure. It weren't nothing I done what caught his eye."Mary smiled and rolled her eyes. "There were more'n a few nights..." She too went quiet for a moment, and the smile faded away entirely. Old memories that were better off lost teased at the edge of her thoughts and something inside her went a little cold. She was careful not to look at Slater. "No. There're worse things than Lord Stanley and his lot."

Slater decided not to press on what those nights entailed and instead squeezed her arm, bringing her fingers to link with his in a very posessive yet assuring manner. Whoever said Slater had no heart didn't know him very well. He just hid it quite expertly. "I know but it still wouldn't hurt the world to be rid of him."

Mary tried to smile, but Jon Darby's name was dangerously close to her lips. "Sure, but he's got kids and their mum would only marry something worse. The world wouldn't hurt none but they might." Mary's hand tightened around Slater's and she leaned against his side for a moment as she tried to distract herself from going further into places it wasn't safe to look into.

"Ere darling, you're so damn considerate. I might leave off him, but if you want me to do anything to avenge the harm done to you you just have t'say the word, right? You know that, don'tcha?" With an affectionate yet slight cuddle they reached the cafe shed lead him to and gestured for her to go in and sit down. "What you doing for Harry then?"

"I know." Mary laughed, her thoughts shifting back to their normal ways. "But I know you're busy. They're sayin you're bigger than ever nowdays." She let Slater lead the way- she didn't mind much one way or the other. It was nice to catch up with him. He was the one thing about the old days she ever missed. She took the lead long enough to head to a table in the back, letting him have a good view of the door and the wall behind him. Some rules were just good to keep. "For Harry?" Mary shrugged. "I'm just staying with him, really. I'm still looking for something to do."
