Lord Hurst's Hunt; The Evening's Entertainment

Subject: Lord Hurst's Hunting Party; The Evening’s Entertainment
Where: Bailston Abbey, The Ball Room
Who: Lord Tobias Hurst
Warnings: none
Open to: All

Lord Hurst hadn’t expected the day to exhaust him so greatly- a morning of hunting and shooting was hardly exerting, after all, but as he and those guests remaining over night settled down to dinner, he suddenly realised that he was near exhausted. Perhaps it was not merely the physical activity, but of entertaining so many young people and having to keep up with them. At least Charles was here and, to some degree, taking up his duties. The play would be preformed before bedtime, and he was, surprisingly, looking forwards to it. His son was no Shakespeare, he knew that, but he could not help but feel that Charles might just impress their guests.

Now dinner was over, the plates cleared away, and the dining room as full of cigar smoke and the smell of good Port. Many of the young men had abandoned the talk of politics now, however, and had moved into the Ball room to join the women folk, and Hurst could hear the quartet begin yet another fast-tempo’d dance.

“If you would excuse me, gentlemen. I promised Lady Hurst at least one dance.” He said, as he got up from his chair and made his way into the room, glancing around the room at the swirling couples. He could help but notice, however, that there already seemed to be one or two guests that had gone off to bed early.

Katherine had not intended to do much dancing, but the smoke in the dining room was enough to drive her out of it and into the ballroom instead. She knew that heading off to bed when the evening was not half begun was rude, so she resolved to stay for at least a respectable amount of time, then bid her host and hostess good evening and retire. As she entered the ballroom, Katherine suddenly felt very dizzy. Dances always made her a bit woozy, the swirling colors of the dresses and the music all too much, but paired with the smoke and that Lord Hurst's high society women friends wore sparkling gowns in metallics, it was positively overwhelming.

And, on account of the aforementioned dresses, Katherine felt as though she was wrongfully a part of the crowd. Her mother, in an attempt to reconcile some of the ill will between her and her daughter, had given her a new gown for the weekend, one seemingly of molten gold, with embroidered lace down the bodice - or, at least, what there was of it, as, in typical Georgina Rochester fashion, the neckline was meant for attracting yet another Parliamentary bedpartner - and brocaded detailing down the skirt. Katherine painfully blended in with the other womenfolk, and she did not want to. But, as she had affirmed to herself, she would not be there long.

Glancing around the room in hopes of finding Daphne, but perhaps sure that her friend would either be dancing up a storm or still with the men in the dining room, Katherine instead caught views of the other guests. She knew many of them by face, if not well, and others she knew not at all. A friend of her mother's here, a business partner of Miles' there, and it was not until her eyes had wound their way completely around the room that Katherine finally noticed the inevitable; Eward emerging from the dining room into the ballroom. She turned away, both ashamed of what she had said earlier and eager to avoid confrontation once again, needing time before she might speak to him again.

Having spent the dinner laughing and jesting with the various folk he either knew or had met that morning, Eward's energy for making nice was waning. The mask of the jolly and wickedly witty Lord was beginning to fall and though he wanted to dance Eward would have preferred to simply disappear up to his room. However appearances were made to keep up and he could hardly let his droop for a second, lest someone notice and start a whole new round of rumours about how off he seemed, and how was his health?

Walking out of the smoke to the ballroom he took a moment to adjust his eyes. He had never adjusted to cigars or pipes and he was glad to be away from the smokey air, glancing at the detail of the grand room. He smiled at a few guests who greeted him, stepping amongst the crowds to watch the people dance. As his gaze crossed the room he noticed a particularly striking woman in gold. He smiled, preparing to go over when he realised with sudden clarity that it was Katherine.

Heavens. She looked so stunning in that gown it was hard for him to remember exactly how he was supposed to be behaving. On catching her eyes his expression was that of admiration with a hint of a smile, but when he remembered her snappish words from earlier it changed to one of annoyance and superiority which he had displayed to her for years.

Katherine had looked away rather quickly upon noticing Eward, but not before he could catch her eyes, if only for a brief moment. In that second, she had seen his mood shift from, she was sure, initial admiration of her appearance to realization that they were not on speaking terms. As she had turned away, Katherine had seen the old, perhaps falsely superior Eward return in his expression, and that made her stomach churn. But if she was to distance herself, it had to be with someone worth distancing herself from, and that was the Eward she had always known.

Swallowing, Katherine then took a deep breath, calming herself, and turning to go towards the refreshments in the ballroom, far lighter fare than the heavy Port in the dining room and much more to her liking. But in moving in such a direction, Katherine once again found herself inescapably in Eward's line of sight. It was as if she'd never escape without being taunted by what she'd so wantonly done with him. Granted, he had indeed been kinder to her of late, and respectful, but did he not realize that they couldn't behave differently when with company who knew them? Someone would realize that there was something amiss between them.

Strengthening her resolve, Katherine started towards the refreshments anyway. If he wanted to start something with her, it was his move, not hers.

Daniel spotted Daphne's dear friend by the drinks and, if he allowed himself to think on it, she looked rather spectacular. With a smile he approached, leaving Daphne by the side of the dancefloor as he went to get them some drinks, deciding to take the chance to converse with her.

"Having fun?" he asked, oblivious to her nerves about Eward as he scooped some orange punch into a glass.

Katherine was so thoroughly distracted by her determination to avoid Eward's eyes that she barely noticed Daniel come up beside her. She knew him well enough, though not in any great capacity, and appreciated him, especially for the smiles he seemed to bring to Daphne's face without effort. Lord knew, Daphne needed it.

When Daniel spoke, Katherine nearly jumped out of her skin, but managed to appear nonchalant. "As much fun as can be had when one's head is full of smoke and lungs compressed by a corset," Katherine responded in good humor, not wanting to appear as ill at ease as she was. "And yourself?"

Aimé stayed at the side of the ballroom, sipping a small glass of brandy he had brought from dinner. He would have liked to dance, but felt out of place and he was still a little shaken from Mercedes' accident - certainly too much to enjoy dancing and frivolity.

Charles was growing increasingly nervous the closer it was to the actual play. He'd been happy enough during dinner, enjoying the polite table conversations and the food. Now, however, he found himself pacing the edge of the ballroom aimlessly. He would want to share a dance with Abigail at some point in the evening and hopefully pull her aside to talk with her about his risky behaviour. It was all in the name of his art, he reminded himself, and therefore worth it. The words seemed hollow in his own mind and he wished he'd had a second glass of wine.

"Mister Laurent, was it?" Charles said with a smile as he realised how anti-social he was being and paused next to one of the guests. He was a well dressed young man, and attractive, but didn't seem to be actively enjoying himself. That would never do. "Have you been enjoying your visit to Bailston Abbey?"

Aimé glanced quickly at the young man who had come to speak to him. Although they had not been formally introduce he knew him to be Lord Hurst's son - after all the man had made a great show of him at the hunt and then again at dinner. He smiled, although he felt truly uncomfortable. Lord Hurst's son could hardly be a year or so older than he.

"Yes, it was. And you are Charles Hurst, no?" He asked, taking a sip from his glass. "I have enjoyed myself a great deal. Your father seems an excellent host."

"I am," Charles said, actually feeling a bit of pride. "And it's a pleasure to meet you, formally."

He glanced off at the dancers in the center of the ballroom for a moment before turning his attention back to Mr. Laurent.

"My father truly is a dedicated host. I can only hope I've learned enough from him," Charles said. This time he really was proud, for his father. "I'm sorry if I seem a bit distracted at the moment. I've hired a small acting troupe to perform one of my plays after the dancing, and I'm ...anxious about seeing it off of the page for the first time."

Of course he was anxious about far more than that. What if the one of the guests recognised one of the actors? And what about after the play. He couldn't deny that the house was large enough to sneak around in for illicit activities. Naturally, none of these things could be voiced to anyone aside from Abigail.

Emilie had spent the time between the picnic and the ball with a little lie down before her maid had helped her into her new peach satin confection of a ball gown, and piled her luxurious hair into the latest fashion. She felt refreshed and ready to dance. She watched the couples float about Lord Hurst's grand ball room, tapping her foot along to the quartet.

Daphne loved the dance. The colors, the music, the atmosphere, everything about it just screamed fun! Her moods could not be soured, or if they could it would be quite a job to do. Finishing her first glass of wine and watching all the happy couples dancing on the floor. She had been seperated from Daniel only a short time and once she realized this, she looked around, spotting him over by the drinks. And there was Katherine as well. Smiling sweetly at the two from a few feet away, she decided not to join them. Let them get to know each other so that her two best friends could be close.

Something was missing however. Eward had to be lurking some where. Spotting him not too far from Katherine, staring her down like he was trying to put some spell on her. Daphne shook her head at the sight and decided she wanted to dance. And since her partner of choice was getting aquainted with someone, Eward would do for the moment. Sauntering on over to him, her metallic silver gown flowing around her, her hair was up in a loose bun and she had dabbed on her finest perfume, she stood right beside him. "Good evening, Lord Eward," she spoke in a deep, sultry voice. It would be the only way to get his attention now.

Eward was so enraptured with trying to grab Katherine's attention he did not realise he was the centre of someone else's. As his name was mentioned by his side he finally tore his eyes away and turned to see who it was, surprised to find Miss Wexley. She looked very tempting this evening (as far as he could remember he had always been tempted by Daphne one way or another) and he found himself smiling genuinely for the first time that evening.

"Miss Wexley," he said, bowing, his blue eyes flashing. "You look rather sumptuous this evening."

Curtsying, she said, "Oh, you are too kind," she nearly choked on those words, "But thank you, none the less. You look rather dashing, as well," that was every bit of the truth. She didn't want to bring up the topic of Katherine, for his attention may be moved back to her or worse, he could get angry and storm off.

So, she smiled sweetly, and almost seductively, and tilted her head slightly to one side. "Were you planning on dancing this evening, Ewie," reviving the nickname she gave him when they were much younger, "Or were you planning on being a sourpuss the whole night?" she asked with a playful pout.

Ewie? That took him back. He hadn't heard that since he was in his teens and it made him smile. With a bow of his head he beamed at her. "How could I resist the urge to dance when a beautiful lady is at my side? I could hardly be sour."

Holding out a hand he straightened himself with a distinctive smirk. He prayed to God Katherine would see them. "Care to join me, Daffy?"

Abigail had decided to be a bit daring tonight. Instead of her usual blue or pastel, she had found a dress in a deep purple, embellished with gold trip. It was the color of royalty, and the cut a little closer to something Edith would pick more than Abby usually would. It was by no means as revealing as some of the other dresses here, and her corset was laced tight enough to just border on uncomfortable, but she was enjoying herself. She loved to dance, and the decorations for the ball were simply stunning.

Entering the ballroom, her gaze quickly moved through the crowds, seeking any familiar face. She thought she saw her brother, and her gaze followed his, landing right on Katherine Rochester. She frowned at that, wondering what on earth that was about. She would need to speak to him later. She wondered where her sister was, and then she saw her- skirt swirling as she danced in a dress that was far too risqué for Abby's taste. But it suited her sister's daring and vibrant nature.

Abby winced when she saw one of the other guests heading in her direction. He wasn't a bad man, but he made her uncomfortable with the way his gaze moved over her and he seemed to undress her with his eyes. She turned, seeking a familiar face as she tried to weave her way through the crowd to get away from the older gentleman.

Sabana wasn't really interested in dancing, at least not with any of the men she could see. They were all too young for her tastes. Enjoyable enough probably, but full of the gall of youth and she was not in the mood for a tease and a tumble.

She turned, almost bumping into the young woman who appeared to be feeling an overly amours suitor. Looking him up and down Sabana sighed internally - even the old men were as vigorous as rabbits it seemed.

She clasped the young woman by the arm. "My dear! It has been too long. Your dress is simply divine, and such a glorious colour. You must tell me who your tailor is!" She said, leading the young woman across the ballroom away from the over amours attentions of her suitor.

Abigail gasped in surprise as she felt a hand on her arm and she quickly relaxed when she found that it was merely another woman. She smiled, gratefully, and followed her across the the room. "Madame Duval," she replied, breathing a sigh of relief as they lost the older gentleman. "Thank you," she said, her voice a little softer. "I don't believe we've met yet, have we?"

"No, I don't believe we have." Sabana said, pausing by the refreshments to fill herself a glass of wine. "My name is Sabana Alvarez, and you my dear?"

She took a sip of her wine, glancing around the room. "Tell me, are all the men here in want of only one thing?"

"Miss Mountford-Miles?" Harry smiled slightly as he approached, having just emerged from the smoky dining room, having just sealed what might turn out to be a very profitable business agreement. No doubt he'd make more after the performance of the play.

"Are you enjoying yourself, Abigail?" He asked, "Forgive me for not talking to you earlier... you brother and I are no longer on the best of terms." He said, "I didn't know if you would still like to... maintain our friendship?"

Harry can't help but smirk, "And as I remember, the last time we met we were on extremely good terms, Abigail?" He asked, glancing from her to the dance floor. "Perhaps you might like a dance? For formality's sake?" It was a goods as excuse as any to get his hands on her after all, and further annoy Eward until the fool decided he was ready to apologise.

Upon leaving Daphne Eward walked to the drinks table at the other end of the room, promptly pouring himself a whiskey and sipping on it feverently. He had trouble concentrating on anything but Daphne's revelation that she knew, wondering if Katherine was indeed mad about him.

With a sigh he ignored the rest of the party, his back towards the dancefloor. He did not wish to interact at all.

Harry had watched Eward move from his discussion with the young woman, his head tipped slightly to the side as he attempted to decide what would be the best course of action. They had almost come to blows, and although sparing had been satisfying in a strange, unfriendly way. But he could not see it being satisfying for long.

He stepped forwards, and moved towards Eward, fetching his own drink. "Have you managed to make amends with her yet?" He asked, deciding that this was the best course of action, the best words he could have picked.

"Miss Rochester." Harry says quietly, turning slightly to the side, looking out onto the dancing guests and lowering his voice. "She and her friend were discussing you, earlier." He explains, admitting he had eves dropped over a small section of the ladies conversation.

"If you haven't yet, you should. You both seem unhappy about the situation." He adds, taking a sip of his own drink, a particularly fine scotch. "I am sorry about our own disagreement, Eward, but I do not like seeing you like this."
