Playground school bell rings
Again
The voices began to dull themselves within in his mind as he shut out first Gwen, then John. But not Ianto. He couldn’t shut out Ianto’s. Not that the Welshman was saying much. He could feel the pain coming off of him, however. He heard a ding nearby, but he shut out that as well. He could only concentrate on her. The figure within the safety of his arms.
Rain clouds come to play
Again
Thunder rumbled within the confines of the hub. It took him a moment to realize it was another explosion nearby, set off by those John had already inflicted on Cardiff. They would have a hell of a time cleaning up this mess, but it could wait. Needed to wait. He wished it hadn’t been an explosion. He wanted to hear the accompanying sound of... ahh there it was. Water hitting the pavement overhead. When the storms came in Cardiff, as they often did, it always seemed louder within the hub. Or it was just him.
Has no one told you she's not breathing
The rich brown eyes he had always enjoyed looking into were now dull. The life gone. He couldn’t help but feel as if they were still open, staring at him accusingly. Where was the man she had come to depend on when she needed him? Where was the friend who had saved her time and again? Where was the stranger that had saved her from a life of imprisonment for trying to save her mother? Where was the lover she whose touch she so craved when her life hang in the balance?
Folding her body to his chest, Jack Harkness buried his face into the soft black mass of Toshiko’s hair. Tears dampened the locks, but the sob wouldn’t escape.
Hello
I'm your mind
Giving you someone to talk to...
This isn’t happening, he told himself. It was impossible. Toshiko isn’t gone. No. I’m in a nightmare. I’ll wake up and she’ll be fine. She’ll joke about how she’s fine, despite the broken arm, and she’ll let Ianto and I fuss over her. She’ll let us bathe her and kiss her and tuck her in. She’ll stroke my hair, like she always does. And it’ll be fine. He could already feel her fingernails against his scalp, soothing away the nightmare.
Hello
“Jack,” Ianto’s voice broke into his scattered thoughts. The American turned just enough so his blue eyes caught Ianto’s saddened ones.
“Let me take her,” he said quietly, pain obvious. Jack almost shook his head, but he couldn’t shut out Ianto. Never Ianto. Only Ianto knew how to take care of Toshiko. He would make sure nothing happened to her while she slept. And once she woke, Jack would tell her of the nightmare he had. He shifted and placed her small frame into Ianto’s arms. He watched, protectively even though it was Ianto, as the Welshman lifted Toshiko into his arms. He turned and carried her out of the infirmary.
If I smile and don't
Believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Jack got to his feet. There was an emptiness in how he moved and yet there was a happiness within his eyes. The combination bordered on insanity and it worried Gwen to no end. She tried to move over to him, but he dodged gracefully. As he always did. Gwen nor Owen had ever been fools, but Owen was not always as observant of things around him as Gwen was. She had seen the relationship that had evolved between Jack, Ianto and Tosh. She could almost pinpoint the date the three became mutual lovers. The change in all three had been obvious. Now one of them was gone, and another was starting to fall into his own reality where nothing had changed.
“Jack, we need to figure out arrangements for Tosh. And for Owen,” Gwen managed to get out. “Need to tell their families they’re gone...”
Jack slowly turned, his eyes both dull and bright at the same time. “There is no need for that,” he said, his voice low. Tosh is going to be fine, we just need to find Owen.”
“Jack...” John started.
“You. Leave,” Jack said firmly. “You’ve done enough damage.” Without another word he turned on his heel and headed towards his room within the confines of the hub.
“Something’s not right,” John said, hoping Gwen would listen to him. “This... he...”
“I know,” Gwen said, looking after Jack as he walked. She lifted her chin to look at John. “Though, I’d suggest doing what he says. For now.” All John could do was nod.
Don't try to fix me I'm not broken
“Jack?” Ianto said, his voice breaking into Jack’s thoughts as he held a scrap of fabric in his hands. A camisole that Tosh had left in his room. He remembered how he had carefully pulled the whisper of silk from her body, his lips soon tracing a pattern on her skin. Ianto had been behind her, his lips tracing a similar pattern along the skin of her back. A soft smile came to Jack’s face as he thought of how her moans had filled the room. Such a quiet woman normally, she was a vocal lover.
“She forgot this,” Jack said, his voice a bit dull. “Think she used it as an excuse to come back. I’ll make sure to have her stay again when she’s feeling better. Though I can’t wait to see what she’ll leave behind this time.”
“Jack,” Ianto said, his voice pained. “She’s not--.”
“No,” Jack cut him off. “Don’t say it.”
“But--.”
“No.” Jack turned, his eyes intent as he burned a gaze into Ianto’s. “She’s not gone. She is going to be okay.” The insanity burned within the depths of his eyes.
Hello
I'm the lie
Living for you so you can hide
“Jack,” Ianto said again, tears in his eyes. “She’s gone.” His heart broke. The woman he had fallen in love with was dead. The man he loved, they had both loved together, was falling into insanity.
Don't cry
“No!” Jack said, tossing the fabric onto the bed. “She is NOT gone!” Jack advanced on Ianto, jabbing his index finger into the man’s chest. “I did NOT spend thousands of years buried alive to be frozen, WAITING to come back and stop all of this just for her to be gone!”
“I’m sorry, Jack,” Ianto said.
“NO!” Jack grabbed his jacket. “She is NOT dead!” He shook Ianto for emphasis. “I didn’t go through that, the pain, the insanity just to lose her! Just so you could lose her!” His fists bunched within the lapels of Ianto’s jacket more. “She kept me far more sane than I should be. The thought of coming back to you both kept my mind from cracking. Every time the taste of earth touched my tongue and I felt it filling my lungs, death claiming me again, I thought of Toshiko. And of you. And I lived. Oh, I lived. So don’t you DARE tell me she’s gone!”
“You think I want to believe it?” Ianto finally snapped. “I love her and I love you! She’s dead but you are still here!” His lips trembled and tears were in his eyes. “And yet you aren’t. I’ve lost her, I don’t want to lose you too.”
“She’s not--,” Jack tried to say again.
“She is, sir!” Ianto finally yelled, hoping the force would bring clarity to Jack’s blue eyes. Ianto saw something snap and the sorrow came. Tears began forming in Jack’s eyes as it all became clear. “She is, sir,” Ianto said again, this time his voice a mere whisper. “Our... our love is gone...”
Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping
Jack’s face crumpled. He slowly shook his head, not wanting to believe. Ianto cupped his face; it was Jack’s undoing. As a sob was ripped from his chest, Jack collapsed into Ianto’s arms. The two men began to grieve against one another. No one had truly known, the pain was too deep for them to ever face and yet they now had to. They both had to find a way to go on. Days later, this thought was brought home as they watched their beautiful Toshiko say her finally goodbyes to them all, a mere image on a computer screen. With Gwen beside them, neither Ianto or Jack had ever felt so far from one another. And yet so close as well.
Hello
I'm still here
All that’s left of yesterday
