WHO: Betty Ross & Bruce Banner
WHEN: 226403.13
WHERE: D7, and then around the ship.
WHAT: They catch up after eight years of running around each other.
WARNINGS: None that I can think of.
STATUS: Incomplete.

______________

Betty was being stubborn. He was saving the world. But she still thought Bruce could have called her-- could have left her a message. The last she heard from him was her necklace in the mail.

She was heartbroken, to be honest. She wanted a life with him. It was too late now. It was all too late. She wanted children with his last name, his eyes, his nose. Betty wanted to live in a house with him and teach biology at Culver and get tenure.

But now she was on a shapeship with a monster she helped create. A monster that hadn't spoke to her in years, who she watched save the world a few times. It was strange.

She waited eagerly for the sound of a knock. She had so much to say... it was going to choke her.

This was terrifying. And maybe it shouldn't have been. Maybe it wasn't as bad as all that. Maybe compared to fighting off Centauri or Ultron, this was nothing. But those were the Other Guy. This was Bruce. And Bruce was nervous. Possibly even scared.

He'd missed her. So many times he'd wanted to contact her, to try again. But he'd wanted to give her the chance to move on. She couldn't do that with him always popping back in. And she deserved better. So much better. His life was no place for a woman with her talent and abilities.

Hesitantly, he knocked. She'd open the door to find him fidgeting. It was, after all, his go to when anxious. And boy, was he anxious.

Just the sight of him took her breath away. His fidgeting made her smile softly. There went all her anger. The way she felt for him was like a plane crash that never hit the ground. It would never hit the ground, as far as she was concerned. A drop in her stomach and a twist of fear and relief all at once. With no end. Even when it looked-- very much so, eight years worth, of ending.

Betty leaned against the door. "Hi."

She was still beautiful. Not that he expected time to change that. It was Betty. She'd be ninety with grandchildren and she'd still be impossibly beautiful. Though the thought of her with grandkids tugged uncomfortably at his heart. They'd never be his. And that still hurt. It probably always would.

He took a breath, steadying his heart rate. "Hi," he replied softly. While he liked to think he could hold a conversation, now he wondered. "Um. Do you have a roommate or anything?" Banner, could you be more awkward?

"No, no roommate. But we're walking, remember?" She stepped out and closed the door behind her. "There's stars to see, and places where my voice will echo will I yell at you." She was joking, she wasn't going to yell at him. Even though she wanted to.

"So, where do we start?"

He actually wouldn't have blamed her if she did yell at him. She did deserve to. But the stars... "You're going to love them," he reassured. "And not just because we're surrounded by Kirk and Spock and Bones...have you met him yet?" The scientist was little kid levels of excited at even the idea of getting to work in the same lab as the famous doctor.

"Let's go this way," he suggested, nodding towards the mess hall. If she snapped and yelled at him, maybe she wouldn't be quite so vicious if they were in public.

She was excited about Kirk and Spock and Bones as well. "No, but I spoke with Kirk on the network." Betty looked like she was about to giggle like a schoolgirl. She covered her mouth to stop it from happening.

"How long have you been here?" She asked, as he seemed to know the way around. Though, she knew he was heading to the mess hall... and she thought she knew why. It was an old trick, to bring someone to a busy place so they wouldn't yell at you.

As if he didn't know her well. As if he didn't remember even the tiniest details about her. They were both ecstatic to be on the Enterprise, even if it wasn't the one they had watched growing up. "He's pretty brilliant. This is pretty brilliant. You can squeal if you want. I won't tell."

"About a week or two," he answered, looking sideways at that pretty profile. "Not much longer than you, really. I just...have explored a bit." He wasn't sure he was entirely ready to bridge the subject of Natasha and their non-relationship. Betty would be hurt. He knew that. But, in his defense, he hadn't exactly given in to Nat, either.

"Okay, a small one." And she let out a squeal and squeezed his arm. "Eee! They're so young." She let out a sigh and let go of his arm.

"Why didn't you contact me again after you sent me my necklace?" Well, might as well rip the Band-Aid off. She fiddled with the said necklace, roped around her throat.

It was stupid that the little girlish squeal and the squeeze of his arm could still make his stomach do flips. Just under the surface, the Other Guy stirred. Even He remembered Betty. And why shouldn't He?

And then, there it was. "I thought... I thought it would be better. For both of us. You're safer away from me. From us. And your father hates me." Had actively hunted him, actually, but that was besides the point. "I've had to do a lot of growing, Betty. A lot. He's taken time and patience." Things he might not have had if he was worried about her. "I didn't stop caring about you. I just....couldn't." He shoved his hands in his pockets, trying to find anything to do with them but reach out to hug her.

The Other Guy saved Betty once. The Other Guy was calmed by Betty once. Natasha had the Lullaby but Betty could just stare him down and tell him to stop it.

"I don't talk to my father, for one thing." She pointed at him when she said it. "And another thing, you can't tell me what's good for me. Then you're like him."

When he said he couldn't she didn't get it. "You couldn't care about me? Or you mean you couldn't deal with ... being..." She closed her eyes, trying to find the words, "Couldn't try to be normal despite your condition? Because you seem to be all right with it now."

There it was. That fire, that feisty woman he'd fallen head over heels for all those years ago. And, despite himself, he smiled sheepishly. "I can't tell you, no. No one's ever been able to tell you what to do. But I can suggest it." And in those early days, it had taken everything he had not to hurt people. If he'd hurt her - again - he'd never forgive himself.

"It hurt. Wanting to be with you, wanting you to move on. I wanted to check on you all the time but it was..." He shook his head, stopping in the hall and turning to look at her. Those big eyes that always seemed to look straight through him. She was dangerous with those eyes.

"I'm not 'all right' now. I don't know that I'll ever be. But it's...better. We're better. I still worry. I worry every single day and here I'm trapped in the middle of space on a ship that, at the end of the day, isn't that big after all." Natasha had mentioned it, and she wasn't wrong. A change here could be deadly. "But I'm better. I'm trying. God, Betty, I'm trying so hard."

It was strange how he didn't seem to age. Maybe it was the gamma. She expected him to have more grey by now. Maybe some little glasses perched on his nose and some more wrinkles. She stared him down, trying to remember every little detail about his face. In case he disappeared again. He was like smoke to her.

"I know you're trying." She reached out for his hand. "Nothing bad's happened yet. I just thought you were better about it. Except for what I saw on the news... in Africa. What happened there?"

He sure felt like he aged. He felt older every single day. It would be an experiment in itself. Obviously the Other Guy wouldn't let him die in most traditional ways. How would old age affect them both?

The way she was looking at him actually made him catch his breath. And then she was doing that thing. That beautifully optimistic thing where she had so much more faith in him then he had in himself. And he really shouldn't have been surprised she had been following along with the news. "An enhanced woman. Young girl, late teens, early twenties. I don't know, but she's powerful. Very powerful. She made us all see things." He couldn't shake it. The Other Guy had blocked the worst of it for him, but that had, in the end, been the problem. "That's the last thing I remember. Before coming here."

"Oh! It's been awhile since then. I was looking for you, and couldn't find you." Then again, Bruce was good at that. "This enhanced woman, was she..." Betty looked down, trying to remember the name. "Wanda Maxi.. noff? Maximoff? Do you know?"

Because if that was the case, Bruce missed out on a lot.

Even just the sound of her name sent an angry shudder through him. A few deep breaths and the voice inside of him was quieted. Still, it was concerning. She could show up there, tear him to shreds again, and then what? "Maximoff. Yeah. Her and her brother Pietro. They were experiments from some horrible scientists. Not the amazing kind like you and me."

He tried a little smile. Despite the serious conversation. "How much longer for you?" She'd been looking for him? How hard could he have been to find? He was in the public eye. Probably much more now that he'd leveled a small city. The very thought made him sick.

She smiled softly when he called them amazing. "Yeah, we sure are amazing with what we made."

"It's been about a year..." He disappeared. Even her father didn't know where he was. "You were gone. Tony probably hid you. What does he remember?"

His face fell slightly. Suddenly he felt anything but amazing. Maybe she hadn't meant it to hit as hard as it did. That didn't mean it didn't hurt. "Yeah..."

Disappeared? He was on the run again. It was the only explanation. What had happened in Africa had sent him on the run. "He wouldn't know. He's from earlier on than even me." But he had a feeling who might. "Natasha. She's been insanely secretive. I'd bet anything she knows." Yet she was still willing to talk to him. So what could have happened?

She thought the Hulk was amazing. And he saved Harlem. Even though he kind of broke it in the process. It was her father's fault, if anything. All of it.

"Then ask her. Find out what she knows. Because I sure as hell can't keep tabs on you. I tried. I almost got a job with SHIELD just to try and see if they knew."

He looked at her, then. Really looked at her. The way the years hadn't seemed to touch her. The way she was frozen in time, still exactly as she'd been in his memories. "You did?" His voice was quiet, almost awestruck. The fact that even after all the time she still thought he was important enough to keep an eye on? It was incredible.

And he didn't deserve it.

"You're too good for them," he protested.

"Don't tell me what I am," she said with a small smile. "Don't presume to know what's best for me. You obviously don't know anymore."

The smile slowly slipped into a frown. "I want us to be friends. Can we be friends again? At least that?"

"I'll always know how amazing you are. You can only get smarter with time." And he knew SHIELD had some amazing scientists on staff. But none of them were Elizabeth Ross. She was brilliant and always had been.

Friends. He could manage friends. Couldn't he? Maybe. It was hard to picture. Managing to stay just friends with someone he'd loved so deeply for so long. Someone he'd hurt so badly... "If...if that's what you want. Of course. I don't want to hurt you. Ever."

"I still love you, you know." She said it as if she were announcing the weather. It's raining, Bruce. I love you. "In love with you. I'll never stop. But if friends is all we can manage, I'll take it."

She suddenly seemed more closed off. Tinier, even, pulling her arms in close to herself. Betty just admitted to something that was painfully obvious but still embarrassing.

His breath caught. She couldn't. She wouldn't. All that time. His mind flashed back to a ring. A diamond ring he'd had saved for when the Gamma experiment was completed. Weeks later, he'd used it to but himself anonymity and a way out of the country. Dropping off Ross' radar. But he'd never once forgotten.

"Betty..." His voice was soft, but it usually was. Among his loud, outspoken teammates, he rarely had the need to speak up. "If... I mean, it isn't ideal. I know that. And being here probably makes it worse." Knowing he could blow up at any time was scary. "But... We could take it slow. Like the beginning. If... If you're willing to even try and forgive me."

And the consequences, he'd deal with one at a time. He needed Tony just then.

She looked like she could cry. "Of course I forgive you. I'll always forgive you." Betty nodded, "Like the beginning. Start over." She forced a little smile then, reaching for his hand again.

"Just this time, we have another entity to consider. But I won't be afraid of you. Of him... as you call it." She released him then, "Let's go get food. Talk about what we've missed out on."

The hand not holding hers reached up, lightly stroking her cheek. He didn't deserve this. A second - no, a third chance. But he was entirely too grateful. So long as he didn't mess it up this time.

"Our first date will be a mess hall on the Enterprise. That'll be a story to tell." She wasn't afraid, but Bruce certainly was. She didn't feel Him there, under the surface, ready at a moment's notice to take over. She hadn't spent years coming to terms with His existence and the ways it affected Bruce's mind and body.

"Do you remember our real first date?" She smiled at the fact that he called it a date. There was hope in her body now. It showed in her smile, in her eyes, in her voice.

"Chinese food in my dorm after hours."

The hand she held shifted so that his fingers laced through hers. "I remember. I had planned on taking you out and then we got so busy studying that anything fit for a proper date would have been closed already."

Despite the many years that had passed, he could still see it clearly. The two of them cross-legged on her bed, passing takeout containers between them. Most guys might have taken advantage of being in a girl's dorm room. He hasn't even tried. Merely a soy sauce flavored kiss goodnight.

She smiled at him so sweetly. "We have quite a history. Can't throw that away." That was why she was forgiving him. Because of all the times she was with him and never wanted it to end. Because of all the times she thought of marrying him, having children with him-- or even growing old without children. The children they taught were enough.

"I won't quit on you. If you don't quit on me."

He didn't deserve this. Not after everything. She was right. He'd behaved just like her father, deciding what was best for her. Letting Ross run him off, letting himself be forced into hiding. He'd needed SHIELD to keep him from getting locked away. And maybe, in his upcoming future, even that wouldn't be enough.

"You're one of the only people in the world I trust entirely. I'd never quit on you." Hide from her, maybe. But he couldn't just give up on everything they had.
