Valentine's Ball
The Great Hall was decorated brilliantly for the Valentine's Ball. The night sky twinkled, and the sky glistened from the image of snow falling overhead (despite it not actually falling to the ground).

Animated cupids adorned the walls, shooting sparkling arrows at one another. Pink and red streamers were hung haphazardly, moving with the motion of the air.

Fountains of punch (dyed pink and red for the holiday) were available on several tables throughout the room, as well as a chocolate fondue fountain. The long tables for each house were replaced by small circular tables, each with scattered pieces of candy.

Students were invited to the dance floor, while a band played covers of classic wizard and muggle songs, as well as some of their own originals.

((Keep all storylines that take place at the ball in this thread!))

After having successfully avoided the embarrassment of singing Valentine's at breakfast that morning, Faye had decided the worst was over and it wouldn't kill her to make an appearance at the ball. Besides, her mother had just recently owled her to stress the fact that she needed to mingle and socialize more. If word reached her that her one and only daughter had passed on such a great opportunity as this one, she was sure to receive a howler.

Faye really didn't like howlers.

And so she found herself in the great hall, wearing a delicate but simple white dress for the occasion. She observed the people on the dance floor and sipped from her glass of punch which tasted, despite it's horrible color, not half bad.

Stavros had received no less than six singing Valentines this morning. He must've been down on his game -- that was two less than last year. He hated them, but Stavros didn't have the heart to set them on fire at the breakfast table or anything. After all, somebody cared enough about him to send them, and for that he was grateful, even though he didn't ask them to and generally found their attentions highly embarrassing.

So he was mingling at the Ball. He didn't mind it so much, as there was no alcohol and so no drunken girls to avoid. He spotted Faye standing alone and came up beside her with a smile.

"Hello, Valentine," he said jokingly. "You're looking even more gorgeous than usual."

"Ever the charmer," Faye smiled widely as she looked up at Stavros. Even in heels there was still a significant difference in height between them.

"I must say you're looking quite dashing yourself," she complimented him,"one would almost assume you're out to get even more singing Valentines next year."

She took a sip of her drink. "Because, really, nothing says 'you're special' like a mass-produced sentiment sung in by someone else," Faye chuckled, rolling her eyes.

"Hopefully, singing Valentines fall out of fashion once one leaves Hogwarts. But thank you," he said, chuckling in his turn.

Stavros looked around the room. "So, are you having fun yet?"

"Ah, don't count on it. My mother still gets them," Faye grimaced at the thought of being that old and still receiving the nasty, little buggers.

She smiled at his question. "I'm not really having fun yet, though your company certainly brightened my evening." She glanced at the table full of punch. "I think it will only get interesting once they start spiking the drinks," she said. There was a reason why she was drinking so early. Knowing most of the Slytherin boys, it was very likely things would be shaken up soon.

"How about you? Have you seen that nice girl yet?" She asked, turning back to him, "what was her name again? Scarlett?"

So much for having something to look forward to upon leaving Hogwarts.

"I'm glad to hear it," he said amiably. "And no, I'm not really actively looking for anyone tonight. Assuming there are any interesting girls here, the idea of hooking up with one on Valentine's Day is a bit too much for my sensibilities." He smiled wryly. People tended to be a bit silly when it came to not spending Valentine's Day alone, and he didn't want to fall victim to somebody's desperation. Not that he was an easy catch on any other day of the year.

Faye laughed softly. "You are far too wary sometimes," she said mildly, "I know some girls can get quite...desperate... to be with someone on Valentine's Day, but they're not all bad."

Why she was defending the other female students, she had no idea. Truth be told, if they happened to be without a partner, most of them were just out to hook up with someone on this particular date. However, her friend needed to let his guard down once in a while.

"You need to let your guard down from time to time," she repeated her thoughts aloud, "you know, loosen up a bit."

Like she was one to talk.

Lily walked into the party wearing a simple deep purple dress. It was one her mother had gotten her for her birthday the previous year, but she hadn't had anything wear it to. She was surprised to see how well it still fit her. Actually, it fit her much better than it had previously since she had been growing into herself and had some new curves that hadn't been there before.

She pushed her hand behind her ear, not quite used to how it was hanging at her shoulders. Typically, it was pulled back and she was usually dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. This was different, but somehow, she felt the same. Awkward and alone. Though, she was getting used to those feelings.

Al saw his little sister and cut through the crowd to get to her. He was a little ruffled by how adult she looked in the gown. She was stunning. "You look like mum, Lils." It was a compliment.

Lisa had been a bit worried about showing up to the ball alone and had almost thought about asking a friend to go with her, but upon seeing how many other people had chosen to do the same, she felt considerably better about it. Besides, what sort of fun was it to have a friend for a date on the day of love?

Wearing a red dress in the spirit of the holiday, she entered the ball, looking around for a familiar face.
