Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Lucy and (gasp!) Chuck
Where: Outside the Great Hall (ball)
What: Bickering and eventual reunion
When: Valentine's day, when else?
Rated: Who knows?

Lucy sat, slumped against the wall in her dress. She didn't care if it got wrinkled. A dress was just a dress. She was more concerned about herself than a piece of material, anyways.

Basically, Lucy had spent the entire evening up until then, sitting in the very same spot comtemplating an entrance. Sure, many couples and a few singles had past her already, some giving her fleeting looks of concern, others not even bothering to look in her direction. But she wasn't really occupied with their thoughts. Only a certain boy's thoughts. Certain ex boy's thoughts, rather. And whether or not he had a charming young lady friend by his side.

Lucy couldn't bear the sight of it. Seeing him with Nat had turned her stomach and positively made her sick. How could she stand to see him dancing and touching someone else? No. No, she couldn't.

And so it was decided. Lucy Toots was not attending the ball she was sitting outside of. But, in attempt to not look desperate, she decided to wait just a bit longer, minutes really, before going back to her dorm. She didn't want to look pathetic and foolish in front of the younger years.

Yes, well... Judging by Chuck's less than shiny attitude lately, he wasn't really winning anything but sympathy points with the female population. It was depressing really. No, really, he was depressed. For the most part, no one was aware just how depressed he happened to be, but he was in pretty rough shape. If he let himself go alltogether, then maybe people would cue in a little, but he still looked good. He just wasn't quite as cocky as usual. And that smirk of his was replaced by a more neutral, blank stare. Not a dead stare, but more of a nonchalant I-could-care-less sort of stare.

Unfortunately, that kind of stare only makes you look cool and not depressed. Oh well.

Long story short, Chuck was dateless, and incredibly (as in beyond fashionably) late. He hadn't even planned on going, but he had to do something, right? It would look bad if he didn't go anyway, so he'd talked himself into getting dressed up and doing the general population the honor of making an appearance.

Another thing about being depressed is it had him looking at the floor a lot lately. Normally, he probably wouldn't have noticed Lucy sitting on the floor, but tonight he did. And he stopped jus short of walking into the dance. He didn't actually say anything. Just... Stopped.

Lucy had this problem before. Not tonight, not yet anyways. But... before. She was used to people staring at her. She'd been spending alot of days slumped on the floor or against walls or crying in kitchens.

Tonight, she'd been fortunate enough to be surrounded by lovesick people or people who wanted to be lovesick. Their paths to the ball were usually straight in, with, like I said before, maybe a glance her way. Though, as her luck would have it, someone just had to stop and be concerned for her.

Great.

"Yes. I'm on the floor. No, I'm not ill. Keep moving, please." She didn't even look up.

Yes ma'am! Can do!

Well. This was awkward enough without last night's adventure, wasn't it?

Chuck certainly didn't want to be lovesick, but he kind of was, as much as he hated to admit it. But his path certainly hadn't been straight in, if it's not obvious by the sudden side trip. He had been pretty sure his time inside would have been pretty miserable anyway, so he hadn't been looking forward to it. But with Lucy outside instead of inside, he could probably go in and at least pretend to enjoy himself without feeling too awful about it.

But, the thing was, he didn't really want to. "Yeah, I know." He mumbled, scratching the back of his head awkwardly, "But then why are you on the floor?"

That voice. That...tone? The two hardly went together, but she still recognized him. Since when was Chuck awkward and nervous? Never, as far as she could remember. He was far too arrogant for that.

"I just...am." She was all out of steam. She'd spent the entire night crying, the entire night before crying, and the entire night before staring at the fire. She really didn't have the energy to argue or think of a witty comeback. She was tired. Of it all, really. "Why do you care?" It wasn't snippy. Just a question.

And she still hadn't looked up yet.

Yeah, real shocker, right? It wasn't really working in his favor either. But at least Scarlet thought he was funny, which was a bonus. Kinda.

"Oh." Well that explained... Nothing. Whatever. Chuck shrugged and took a small, calculated step closer. "I don't really know. I just do. Does it matter?"

"A bit, yeah. It all matters, doesn't it? If your standing here, it matters for something." She closed her eyes, kept them shut for a minute and then opened them, finally looking up at him.

"Everything matters."

She brought up a good point there. It sort of had Chuck dumbfounded for the time being. He just stared at her and blinked, finally managing a nod.

But honestly, any other day, he probably would have walked right past, because his head would have been... Elsewhere. Both literally and figureatively, but instead, he was standing there staring at her instead of going into the dance like he normally would have done. It seemed to be a recurring theme in his life lately.

"I guess so." He sighed, "Mind if I sit, too?"

She scooted over, but added for good measure, "I don't own the floor." It was the closest thing to friendly banter she could muster. She even forced a weak smile, though the source of her weakness was unknown. To her, to Chuck, to me, even. It could have been her poor heart, her depression, or the mere fact that her feeble muscles could hardly stand to form the curve.

Whatever it was though, it looked terribly sad and broken. How ironic, yeah? Because that's exactly how Lucy felt lately.

"So why aren't you in there?" She gestured the dance, before looking at her hands.

Adding to the overwhelming amount of weakness going on here, Chuck let out a weak laugh, sitting down next to her, "Oh good. I wasn't sure if you'd made any business deals lately. I mean, the floor is prime real estate." So maybe his banter wasn't suffering so much, but his facial expressions weren't what they usually were.

What sad kids. What a depressing Valentine's Day. Guh.

"I don't know. I guess I really didn't feel like it." He answered honestly, if not in a terribly vague manner.

"My lawyer advised me not to make purchases when I'm under duress." She nudged him with her shoulder, but then realized that this was the sort of thing they used to do. Before he cheated. She quickly turned stone again as images of him and Natalie Jensen flooded her mind.

She frowned. It was much easier.

"But...you're here. Dressed up. You must have felt something."

It was, and he missed it, but he also wasn't going to admit it here and now. It would just look bad, or make him seem desperate-which he was, he just didn't need the whole world knowing.

"Yeah... No. Not really." He shrugged, shaking his head, "I mean, I didn't want to come, and then at the last minute I decided to. Of course I never made it inside, but it's not over yet. I don't really want to though. But what about you. I could ask you the same thing."

Lucy frowned. It was tough to explain her fudged up mind. But she was sure she could do a better job at it then Chuck did.

"Everyone in there is happy. And I'm not. And, even if they're not all happy, then they're all pretending to be happy just for the sake of attracting someone else. It all seems very fake to me. Very...phony. I don't know. It sort of makes me sick, yanno? To watch my friends...or...people I go to class with, make fools out of themselves just so they can get laid tonight and not feel like their world is crashing in. But, what they don't realize, is that there's not nearly enough people in this school for everyone to have someone. Somebody in there has two someones, and somebody in there has none. That's just how it works. So, really, most of them will end up going back to their dorms alone anyways, disappointed and feeling insignificant. Why should I go through all those forced smiles and fake laughs when I already feel like my world is crashing in?"

Well that was a long and complicated, though thouroughly accurate description of the whole shindig. And really, Chuck wanted no part of it for mostly the same reasons. Mostly.

Usually he subscribed to the ideas of fakeness for the sake of getting laid-though usually he didn't have to be too fake. I mean, he really is that arrogant and sarcastic. But still, lately, he'd been seeing a lot of things as they really were, and it was just making everything more miserable.

"Right, right. Well I really don't want to go in now."

"Plus," she started, quietly, with a small voice. "I just didn't want to see you in there having a grand time with some girl."

It was a sad truth. He could be offended or not, but that was a fear she'd had. And I might be wrong in saying this, but I think it's pretty legitimate. And so did Lucy. Which was why she'd slumped against that stone in the first place.

"It would kill me."

Probably, but it certainly wasn't what he wanted to hear. I mean, yes, he did like to know that she still had some sort of... Something for him, but it was painful to hear her say such things.

"Well I don't think you have to worry about that. I'm pretty date-less" He pointed out, sighing heavily and looking down at the floor.

What happened to Natalie? Oh, how that question burned on her tongue. But she didn't dare blurt it out, in fear of starting another fight. Their rows were epic, Chuck and Lucy's, and they took about as much energy as fighting the 30 Years War must have. Lucy wasn't up for it.

Instead, she chanced a glance at the boy next to her. He looked positively sad. They were a pair, eh?

"I'm not happy," she said after a few minutes.

Nothing had happened to Natalie, and almost nothing had happened to Scarlet. You know, all in all, he'd been pretty well behaved aside from the cheating.

Which really doesn't make up for it. But I'm just saying.

"Niether am I." He agreed, feeling as sad as he looked. They were definitely quite the pair. A sad one, but a pair all the same.

"I'm not exactly happy with you, either. I mean. I am. But. Sometimes you have this way of making me feel stupid, or like I don't matter. But then, there were times when I felt like I was the only one you ever saw." She frowned.

"I'm miserable without you. How pathetic am I?"

"About as pathetic as I am." He shrugged, not really sure what he could say to her. He'd been the one who'd messed up. Seriously, he should probably continue to be depressed until he reached an acceptable level of feeling awful in retribution for making her feel so bad. It was completely irrational, and weird, but it was also probably a very normal psychological reaction. After all, he'd been the only one she'd been able to talk to-her only friend in all of this and he'd failed miserably. Basically he sucked, right?

"I'm sorry." Not that sorry covered it or anything.

Wordlessly, Lucy dropped her head to Chuck's shoulders. If they were both miserable without the other, what use was it to stay apart? Obviously there was something there between the two of them, no?

"I forgive you," she muttered, closing her eyes. Tears wanted to fight their way out, out of sadness, out of happiness, but she wouldn't let them. They sent the wrong message most of the time. And only ever managed to make the other feel worse.

Chuck was surprised, to say the least. He honestly hadn't expected it to be quite so easy. He glanced over at Lucy's head on his shoulder, not quite sure what to make of the situation.

"You... Do?" He murmured in absolute disbelief.

Wow. She was definitely 100% crazy and he didn't even care. That was the best news he'd had in about a week, and suddenly he felt about ten times better.

"I dunno. Nothing?" He'd still be mad at him if he was her, so it was a good thing he wasn't. Being mad takes up too much energy anyway. Maybe it was for the best?

"I can hold grudges for an eternity, but it would be pointless if it made me miserable."

How very true. While Chuck was still a bit concerned that he hadn't really had to do anything for her to forgive him, he wasn't exactly complaining. He'd just been so miserable lately, it was just nice to know she didn't hate his guts.

His heart sort of jumped a little (Yeah, really. Not kidding.) When she hooked her finger under his. It was sort of silly, all this hesitance and whatnot, considering their history but... Then again, when you consider their history... Chuck took her whole hand in his and laced his fingers with hers. It was a perfectly sweet gesture, especially for him.

It was a perfectly sweet gesture. She was completely thrown off guard. But Lucy definitely wasn't complaining. It was weird, though. It was almost as if they were being purposely sweet to the other because they knew what it was like to be alone-- grim. Lucy knew she needed Chuck. It was simple as that, really. She didn't realize to the extent that he was miserable, though.

"Do you forgive me for August?" She mumbled, nestling her head into him, completely comfortable despite their location on the floor.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Meeee too. I'm SO tired.
[info]chuckrhymeswith
2008-02-16 06:33 am UTC (link)
Perhaps that had something to do with it. The thing was, usually he liked to keep himself purposefully single so he didn't get too attatched, but when Lucy had broken up with him after what had almost but not quite happened with Natalie, he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself anymore. It was a horribly uncomfortable feeling, and their current rendezvous was really the only time that he lost that uncomfortable feeling.

"Mmmhmmm." He nodded, kissing the top of her head, "I probably deserved it."

"I didn't do it to get back at you," Lucy said, a small frown making its way back across her face. Contrary to popular belief, not everything the girl did had something to do with Chuck. "I just wanted to feel wanted."

And it was the truth. And it was a logical reaction to getting cheated on. If your boyfriend doesn't want you, then it just makes sense to search for someone who does. If she hadn't she might've felt completely worthless and not managed to get out of bed that morning.

Her free hand traced the outlines of veins and muscles on the back of his palm, idly.

Well he didn't honestly think she'd done it to purposefully get back at him, but it sure as hell felt like it when he'd walked into the kitchen. Like a slap on the face... Or well... No, he'd been slapped on the face a few too many times for it to actually phase him. It was more like... A punch to the gut really. It was more of a rude awakening than he needed but it was pretty damn effective.

"I know, and I'm sorry." Chuck was repeating himself now, but he didn't quite know any other way to get the point across as to just how sorry he was. Except for saying it over and over and looking just as miserable as he felt.

That was easy for her to say. He still had to live with himself. But enough of his melodramatic selfdeprication. Chuck looked at her all solemn faced, once again put into a tight situation for which he really had no words. Not the right ones anyway.

"Um... Yeah." He mumbled quietly. Poor kid. So humble. He needs to get his spice back.

It was probably safest to not make promises this time, since he generally failed at keeping them. So he gave her the next best thing, "I'll try harder this time." Which wasn't exactly what he wanted to tell her either, but there you are.

Well he certainly hoped she didn't mean sex, because he still was kinda iffy on actually doing it with her. It was really strange for him, honestly. And he wasn't really sure he liked it either, but sleeping he could do.

"Mmmhmm." He nodded, running his hand over her hair.

Either or, though, it wasn't healthy.
