"Have a good afternoon, Miss. Mayfield." Morgan said with a sweet smile as the elderly lady shuffled out of the tiny tea shop. She let the fake grin fall from her face as the door shop closed.

She earned her meager salary by serving customers their tea and sweets but she took the job because there was loads of time to read or write. Today was one of those days when customer trickled in one after another. It wasn't busy but there was always someone popping in for it like they knew exactly when the most exciting part of her book was happening. It never failed, just as things got most interesting on the page, that annoying little bell would ring to signify another

Grabbing the dog-eared copy of To Kill a Mockingbird off a shelf under the cash register, glancing at the broken spine and pages that were falling out. It was time to buy another copy. The book had always been one of her favourites and she'd been through a half dozen copies of it.Morgan perched on a stool and propped her feet up on the shelf. It was only a few moments before she was completely immersed in words of Scout Finch, shutting out the world around her.

Padma realized her sentimentality was bordering on the absurd, but she assumed if she kept things to herself, no one would be the wiser.

And so she reveled in the smallest of things and this first of all, to be walking near enough to brush now and then Theodore's sleeve, his trousered leg with her stockinged one. They had hardly made time for such errands during her visits, not when there were so many pleasures to be had indoors instead of out. Her rambling country walks had made little sense of the village, and Tinworth was as fresh to her as his face in the morning.

She would relish this for as long as it lasted.

A jingle announced them at the tea shop, and Padma inhaled happily several of her favorite scents.

"Hello Morgan," Theodore began, shutting the door gently behind them with a second jingle, the little brass bell bouncing on it's coiled wire over the door. He wasn't overly familiar with the shopgirl and former schoolmate, beyond knowing her name or that her mother had been the source of a great many dinners over the span of Theodore's time in Tinworth, but he knew she would have biscuits enough to sate even Padma's love for them. "This is Padma Patil. Padma, this is Morgan Corner."

He hoped not to need to elaborate on either side of the introduction; as the only other detail he had picked up about Morgan was her constant reading while on the job or about the village, and Theodore wasn't yet quite sure how to define this large leap he and Padma had made in their relationship. 'Girlfriend' sounded both trivial and hefty at once, and there wasn't any sort of colloquial term for a girl you loved, who lived with you now, but whom you had no immediate plans of marrying.

Morgan and Padma it was.

Morgan was barely able to stifle the groan as the tiny bell rang once again. Despite her irritation, she quickly tucked the book onto the shelf and plastered a cheerful smile on her face as looked up to her new customers.

The dark haired girl was someone new to Tinworth. At least Morgan didn't recognize her, and in a town as small as Tinworth that meant she must be new.

Her eyes moved from the pretty Indian witch to the next figure to enter the little tea shop. She recognized him as Theodore Nott. They knew each other vaguely from around town. Other than the facts that both of then were Hogwarts alum and residents of Tinworth, she felt confident there was very little they would have in common. They weren't exactly part of the same social circles. Not that Morgan actually had a social circle.

As Theodore introduced the women, Morgan's smile warmed as she turned back to Padma and she offered her hand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Padma. Welcome to Tinworth, it isn't much but it's home." She grinned good-naturedly.

Accepting the gesture and clasping briefly Morgan's hand in both of her own, Padma inclined her head slightly with a smile. She had noted Morgan's haste at the shelf, but did not want to pry, or perhaps get her into trouble for having been doing something she shouldn't while working. There had been times enough when her attentions wandered, or the scribblings tucked between the interviews she was in the middle of transcribing were anything but translations.

"We rarely know the value of our homes until we have left them," Padma mused, still smiling softly. "I like it here very much."

"She'll even be missing Kiev, someday," Theodore said, shaking his head. It had been Padma's least favored home; far behind India, England, and even Germany. "So far Tinworth's just been the occasional weekend, but now that she's back in England it's more of a proper residence."

They were after biscuits of course, but it wouldn't be a bad idea if Padma could meet someone to talk to besides himself and Miles, who Theodore suspected she would soon grow irritated with. They could take tea out for a change, unless Padma showed any objection. "Two for tea, I think?"

"Well, a new face in Tinworth is always a wonderful thing. I do hope you enjoy it here." She said sincerely. She nodded as Theodore placed their order.

"Please, make yourselves comfortable. I'll get your tea."She guestured towards the small tea room and the assortment of comfortable chairs and tables draped in delicate lace tablecloths.

Moving back behind the counter, Morgan set about the routine task of preparing a fresh pot of tea for the young couple. While it was steeping she decided to grab a plate of Zozma's fresh baked biscuits to serve with them. She dog-eared her page in her battered old book and set it on the counter while she pulled a small serving plate from the shelf.

After a few moments, she had a tray set up with everything they needed for a lovely tea for two.

Padma was not at all adverse to spending an afternoon out. It was not yet comfortable for her, wiling away the hours in Robinswood with Theodore at work, avoiding Miles not because she wanted to be rude - even if she found his company to be a little strange - but because her roommates had, all of her life, been exclusively female. She was adjusting still to the many changes in her recent life, among them her own, deliberate hand in having decided to live with Theodore in the first place.

Tea in a shop would be a welcome normality.

She sighed, placing her little notebook and quill on the edge of the table in front of her, leaving room enough for tea to be laid out. The quill she'd trimmed down almost entirely, and only a tuft of feather emerged from between the pages of the book.

"And yet you are without your prop," Padma observed, remembering other afternoons in other places, when she would splash tea over blank pages, and Theodore held his camera lens well out of harm's way.

"I'll have to see if Miles won't pick up more film for me," Theodore mused. It was remarkably expensive stuff, Polaroid film. Theodore wondered if it wasn't simply his cousin running the price up to fleece his own pockets, but had been utterly flummoxed the sole time he had gone into a Muggle camera shop and asked for film. There were three brands, for a variety of cameras that were all classified as Polaroids, black and white or color, some that required peeling apart, and others that were glossy, and somehow filled with pigments. He had thought to bring in one of the snaps he had already taken, but the salesgirl - with her blatantly unrestrained bosom, thickly-rimmed glasses, and several dozen beaded chain necklaces - had not inspired confidence that she would be of any greater help than without.

To be fair, he had captured dozens of photographs of Padma that he loved, and had purchases a far finer magical camera. There was still something endearing about how the old Polaroid spat out photographs instantaneously, how they faded into focus from murky white.

He looked up when Morgan reappeared with a filled tea tray. "What do you do, when both tables are full?" he asked, curiously. "Just tell people to come back later?" It wasn't indicative of the food or service, that despite the maximum capacity of only eight customers, Theodore had never seen it completely full except for village feasts when extra tables were mysteriously added. Zozma, Theodore knew, was considered eccentric even in Pureblood circles; she likely preferred to limit the amount of customers she might have to deal with at once.

Morgan grinned as Theodore indicated the other empty table. "I'm not sure what I'd do. It's not a problem we've ever run into here."

And that was part of why Morgan didn't mind working here. It was quiet and removed from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Inside Tinworth Teas, it was like a little oasis where she could read and enjoy the peace.

Balancing the tray on one hand, she used her free hand to set the pretty dainty teapot and matching cups and saucers onto the delicate tablecloth in front of the attractive couple. Then she set down the plate of biscuits with a smile.

"And I took the liberty of bringing these as well. Zozma baked them fresh this morning and the lemon ones are to die for."

Padma brightened at Morgan's generosity, and at the pleasure of the display before her. English or Indian, it was difficult not to appreciate a good tea.

"Thank you," she offered politely, but with warmth. She noted the book that waited for Morgan on the counter, and did not want to keep her. Padma understood all too well what temptation there was in uninterrupted reading. She inclined her head, indicating the book and grinning. "I do hope she allows you to treat yourself in more than one way."

Morgan followed Padma's gaze to her book which she had absently placed on the counter while preparing their tea. She chuckled a little sheepishly. Her cheeks pinked slightly.

It was common knowledge to most of the residents of Tinworth, that Morgan Corner had her nose buried in a book and it was a knowledge that Tinworth's newest resident had learned within ten minutes of meeting her. She glanced back to Padma's warm smile and mirrored it with one of her own.

"I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention that," She indicated the book with a broad grin, "to my mum or Zozma. I'm not sure if they understand my need for a little company at work, even fictional company." She said with a laugh.

Hooking a finger through the handle of her teacup and toying with the delicate vessel, Padma's tone was conspiratorial.

"Fictional company is often the very best of all," she grinned at Theodore, bemused. In the last few years when she did not have his letters to read, Zelma's worrying about this or that, heaps of translations... she had novels and verse to occupy her.

"Your secret is quite safe with me."

"I'd wager you're more likely to get access to a whole other library of books, before she would ever think of giving you up," Theodore laughed. "She's practically taken over my own, there's a stack of cartons taller than her that need to be unpacked." It was going to be a funny library; a mix of Theodore's texts on Astronomy, Arithmancy, or Alchemy, beside her volumes of poetry and prose in the widest variety of languages possible. Plus dozens of novels, a smattering of plays and Muggle literature - - all in all, if it outgrew the space provided, they could always take over the little used formal dining room as well.

Morgan chuckled at Theodore's words. He could have been describing her library. When she'd moved back to her parents house, her brother, Michael had spent a great deal of the time complaining about the amount of heavy boxes she had. More than half of the boxes she'd toted back to Tinworth were filled with an eclectic collection of classic Muggle and Wizard literature, poetry and more than a few newer best-sellers.

Her friend, Sarah had come up with a brilliant idea of having a Book and Bake club and since that had started her book collection had grown even more. Their group was small but it was always a fun night. And Sarah's lemon biscuits were even better than Zozma's. Not that Morgan would ever tell the elderly lady that.

Then she was struck by inspiration. She glanced at Padma again with an eager smile.

"If you aren't busy on Tuesday night, my friend Sarah and I get together with a couple friends for a Book and Bake night. You'd be more than welcome to join us. It's just a casual night of talking about books and eating a sinful amount of sugary treats." She grinned. "I'm sure you'll love Sarah. If not, you're guaranteed to fall in love with her spice cake."

Padma blushed with pleasure at the invitation. While it could not be said that she did not make friends easily, her reserve was often mistaken for lack of interest or snobbery. It felt rather nice to have been given an easy opportunity to enter society in Tinworth, especially when that company included books, spice cake, and lovers of books and spice cake.

"I am... not busy, thank you. I would love to come. Where... ?"

"We're meeting at Sarah's this week. She lives in Quin cottage, near the waterfront." She bit her lip thoughtfully for a moment before turning to the counter in search of a quill and paper. She wrote out the address and handed the slip of paper to Padma.

"But if you like, you could meet me here around seven? I'm heading over to Sarah's after work. We could go together." She suggested.

"You could join us as well, though I will warn you it's a bit of a hen party." She said to Theodore with a grin. She wasn't sure if he enjoyed literature as much as Padma seemed to, but she wasn't about to be rude and exclude him.

Theodore laughed, and shook his head. "As clever as it sounds, I'm afraid I wouldn't fit in as well as Padma. Maybe you'll let her bring home a bit of spice cake for me, if it doesn't all disappear before the night's over."

Buoyed by the ease at which Padma had made her first friend, Theodore poured tea and added a tiny spoon of sugar and lemon. If the group rotated between houses, he and Miles could go spend the night in Hogsmeade, or Padstow while sweets, stories, and whatever else girls spent time on were discussed.

Decidedly more liberal with her sugar than Theodore had been, Padma smiled softly at his polite refusal. She would have to learn French it seemed, if she wanted to secretly convey things like, I shall return with something far sweeter than spice cake, in public. She had not avoided the language for its difficulty, but because she appreciated too much the mystery of it on his tongue.

"I am afraid I shall have to ask Tilly to make something for me, as I would not know what to do with kitchen implements of any kind."

"We can definitely send Padma home with some sweets for you." Morgan grinned. Turning her head slightly, she laughed softly. "Don't worry. I can barely boil water without burning the pot. Mum is continuously disappointed in my culinary abilities." She said, only half joking. "I usually leave the baking to Sarah. She seems to love it and she is so good at it."

It would be nice to have a new face at their little club. In a town as small as Tinworth, new faces were a rare and welcome occurrence.

"Well, I should stop hovering and let you enjoy your tea. Please let me know if you need anything at all." She smiled and moved back towards the counter so not to crowd the young couple.
