Winter had settled over England, and while there wasn't presently snow on the ground in London, the chill of the night was deepened by the proximity to - of all things - an ice skating rink. Theodore had, for good or for bad, a very persuasive, very impulsive girlfriend, one whom was currently renting skates from the vendor booth, the queue strangely slower moving than the one for the hot chocolates he'd been charged with fetching.

And so he sat on a bench where she would likely spot him, watching those already on the ice. There were people of every skill level, thank goodness, as Theodore had been fearful that it would be just him and the smallest children, teetering around the edge. Two girls near their age were putting on a bit of a show, and everyone seemed careful to get out of their way as they picked up speed to leap off the ice, perform feats that Theodore felt hopeless to ever achieve even if he were to use magic, and land smoothly, skating on.

Wearing no less than three scarves and woolen wristwarmers layered over her gloves, issuing the proper Muggle currency and then successfully balancing two pairs of skates was no small feat for Padma. She managed it, though, and the return walk with careful negotiation of the ice littered path between the rental booth and the bench where Theodore now sat, looking as though he would rather go swimming in the middle of December than don the skates she thrust toward him.

"It is a winter sport, if not a gentleman's one," she offered brightly, pressing a kiss to his brow before sitting down next to him and tugging off her boots.

"Couldn't we have gone to Australia?" Theodore asked, though he wasn't serious in his complaints now that they were actually out of the house, on a true date to preface the dinner from hell the following evening. "Summer sport?"

He set the hot chocolates on the bench between them and accepted his skates. Putting them on was even a challenge, with gloved hands and spindly laces, it was going to be silly once they actually got to the ice. Theodore drank a bit of chocolate, and buoyed by the warmth seeping its way toward his stomach, wondered alound, "What do we do with our shoes?"

Padma had not considered this, and looked about to see what the Muggles might be doing with theirs. An area near where they and many others were seated and changing sturdy winter shoes for skates seemed the place, with rows of cubby holes stacked with sneakers of all sizes.

"There," she determined happily, though when she rose she had to sit right back down again, nearly upsetting her hot chocolate. Carefully, this time, she balanced on the skate's edge before beginning the perilous journey first to deposit her shoes, and then to the ice.

Her grin was broad with the little challenge, and she knew she must have been feeling restless indeed to be enjoying the out of doors in England in December.

With a surreptitious glance at the people standing nearby, Theodore quickly slid his wand from inside his coat, plucked the shoes from the open communal footwear depository, and cast quick Impervius and Disillusionment charms before sending them back under the bench.

More comfortable in the security of his real footwear if not his physical footing, Theodore balanced with his arms slightly outstretched as he made his way to Padma and the even more precarious terrain. "No wonder we don't ice skate," he said with a little smirk as he got near enough to speak softly, "if I had robes or a cloak and tried to do this, I'd be even more of a spectacle."

Attaching herself securely to Theodore's arm, Padma's smile was only slightly less wobbly than her footing.

"There is a spell for everything," she whispered, eyes crinkling in mirth as she continued. "Or you could instead of new dress robes this year commission tailored slacks."

How very tailored Padma intended she did not say, though her expression no doubt gave her quite away for wickedness.

Entirely unaware of how snugly male figure skaters wore their slacks, Theodore scoffed. "Well tailored trousers to dinners is one thing, I'd think it highly uncomfortable for sport like this." The fit of slacks in general had transformed in the last few years, from the loose, airier cut now preferred mostly by elderly wizards who had grown up with only pants beneath their robes, towards the more Muggle fashion. Theodore appreciated the less feminine aesthetic, though the idea of wearing them utterly sans robes made him him wary of the figure he would present.

With Padma holding snugly to him - though he wasn't certain it was a good idea on her part, as he felt more liable to simply take her down along with him - Theodore stepped gingerly out on to the ice.

Padma only grinned at Theodore's having missed utterly her jest, just as carefully attempting the ice as he. Her free hand held fast to the rail at the rink's edge, and while it was populated mostly by the very young, Padma and Theodore were not the only adults to linger there while trying to gain their footing.

She had gone skating with Parvati each Christmas before they went to Hogwarts, it had indeed been the only pleasure to be had in London before the Patils returned to Kottayam for a much needed visit with family there. Still, it had been many years and Padma was feeling anything but steady, for all her enthusiasm.

"If we go very slowly, we should have no trouble remaining upright," she insisted to Theodore.

"Sure," Theodore said, though he wasn't entirely sure the principle would be accurate in application. He slid one foot tentatively in front of the other, aiming only for remaining upright, nothing whatsoever to do with grace or speed. The important thing was that Padma, who had become noticeably sadder and more withdrawn in the last few months, was smiling as she edged him forward, the same sort of glow coming from her that he had seen when they were all younger, and watched Morag drink copious amounts of butterbeer and produce wildly coloured animals out of thin air. She was having fun, and it made him happy as well, no matter what the circumstances.

With a hesitant gulp of air, Padma let go of Theodore's arm but did not stray far from his side, cutting her heels at an angle from her body and gliding a bit clumsily forward. She remembered enough to know that she could not let herself stop and think too long about what she was doing, and was required simply to trust her balance and her limbs.

"Theodore," she gasped, too worried that she might fall over to look back at him, but grinning wildly as she slid forward across the ice.

"Do as I do, sekha!"

Right.

Somehow it was easier said than done, for Theodore was never destined to be as free and wild as Padma. All the same, he put forth a little more effort towards matching her pace rather than toddling along. It was a series of pushing your feet in the right direction, at the right time, with the right amount of force. Though he had mastered a nearly equally complex physical task in archery, ice skating did not come anywhere near so naturally.

Looking up at Padma's figure gliding more smoothly than his own, Theodore pushed hard, glided for the briefest of instants, and toppled forward, tripped on an invisible something. He hit the ice, which was unsurprisingly hard and cold, and winced as he fervently hoped that he was nowhere near the ladies doing their jumps, or children like to trod on him.

At least partially in luck, he sat up, eventually finding his way to his knees and then his feet, though the only forward motion he made was towards the safety of the wall, sheepishly looking around at the other skaters, and for Padma.

Padma heard the clatter and only just managed to keep from falling over as she whipped a look over her shoulder.

Though a minor spill, Padma could see that for all Theodore might not have been visibly wounded, there was more to hurt than simply his body. Clattering over to the wall herself, she pushed off more confidently with an anchored hand towards him.

"Oh, Theodore," Padma sympathized, bringing a gloved hand to his cheek and feeling rather sheepish herself. She would have to have chosen an outing they could not both enjoy. "There is still time for Australia, if you would prefer something else."

"No," he insisted, slightly more petulantly than he had intended. Theodore wasn't keen to give gliding another try at that very moment, but he also was not ready to give up entirely. "I'm fine, I'll just stay near the wall and watch you, for a bit."

Though she nodded her agreement, Padma felt sore as she skated off again. There were trials in enjoying so much of each others' company that she had not known when they were apart, though she endured them for the new joys that numbered greater.

Slow but steadily more daring in her stride, Padma turned a long corner, edging around a young Muggle woman with a small child at each hand. She breathed a low sigh, mood unraveling with the pace and the brisk air.

Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man’s ingratitude...

And yet not this man that she had chosen, for all he might be cross, Padma mused with a returning grin.

Theodore smiled and nodded at the people passing him where he stood at the edge of the rink, watching Padma skate. He stepped carefully out of the way of children, and laughed as a girl who must have been fourteen urged him, "Just keep trying, it's not hard for very long!" as she whizzed past.

All that it would hurt was of course his pride, or perhaps a broken bone which was easy enough to mend, so Theodore again pushed hesitantly away from the wall and towards the unofficial lane set aside for obvious beginners.

He lost track of Padma quickly as he focused on skating without causing a collision, gradually gaining a little more stability as he went along, avoiding the toe of the skate that seemed to catch the ice and make him stumble. It was an awkward thing to do, but as he felt more comfortable, Theodore had to admit that it would have been fun for those who knew what they were doing. He looked around ahead of him now, spotting Padma on the opposite side of the rink and waved.

Padma's natural grace served her well, and while she was certainly not among the daring few who zipped about nearest the center of the rink and doing very mad things like spinning on their heels, she skated along at a comfortable pace, scarf ends fluttering.

She did not see Theodore at first, but when she rounded again where she had left him and did not find him there, Padma looked up to catch his wave. She picked up what little speed she dared, but with an impish grin, swept past him just slowly enough to speak.

"Will you catch me and kiss me, I wonder?"

And he was behind her again.

With a start as she called to him and sailed beyond, Theodore laughed. Any attempts to catch Padma would undoubtedly result in a trainwreck on the ice, and while he needn't feel badly for others if only the two of them fell, he couldn't be sure it would be so simple. He skated instead, very carefully, through the varying levels around him to the small vacant circle of ice in the center that seemed only to be used for spins so swift and tight that the girls performing them became blurs.

If she stopped on her own he would simply kiss her, if she sped past... well, it really wouldn't be fair if he was the only one who fell, now would it?

There was a subtle difference between daring and impulse, and Padma was too often seduced by the latter.

And so it was that when she came back around again and saw Theodore staking a little claim near the center of the rink, she forgot entirely how rough the ice there could be from so few skates having slicked it. What was intended to be a smooth slide into his arms threatened to be something else entirely.

With a yelp that was in part laughter and genuine terror, Padma threw her arms out for balance, ice, or body.

Throwing his arms and eyes wide, though too late with his legs, Theodore served mainly as a rather gangly cushion for Padma's fall. He too cried out as they toppled over, though in what he hoped was a more masculine octave. "Are you alright?" he asked with a chuckle as he lay, admittedly slightly sore but not upset, on the gritty ice.

Padma's response was only to laugh, at first, patting down the parts of her that had received a shock - but hopefully no legitimate injury - from the fall.

"I think we had best stick to English walks, Theodore," she managed finally, voice airy as she climbed first to her knees on the ice before attempting her feet again. The skaters that circled about them were smiling now that it seemed neither was hurt, and Padma blushed at being watched by so many.

"And you? Nothing broken?"

"Nothing broken," Theodore assured her as he too got to his feet and brushed the ice from his trousers and felted wool coat. "I've caught you," he said, taking Padma's hand to prove his adeptness at doing so, "now where's my kiss?"

English walks were definitely remaining the norm, though if neither was hurt and Padma was still enjoying herself, Theodore hoped to make the most of this unusual foray into Muggle holiday tradition.
