Entry tags:character: gilbert wimple, character: sarah fawcett, date: december 2003, place: w: diagon alley

Characters: Gilbert Wimple, Sarah Fawcett
Locale: Madame Malkin's, Diagon Alley
Date: 30 November 2003
Warnings? Probably none.

Gilbert pushed open the door to Madame Malkin's, the shop bell sounding somewhere over his head. He was a little nervous about this venture, but things just weren't as fun with only him and Stan. Hopefully he could get some new players who weren't total weirdos. He'd already put a few of his notices around Hogsmeade, although not a few shopkeepers had given him strange looks.

He clutched his hand-drawn poster anxiously, peeking around to the part of the shop where the costumes had been before Halloween. Maybe if they kept a few year-round, that would be a good spot to put it--if they'd let him, of course. "Excuse me...hello?"

Sarah heard the shop bell jingle faintly, muffled as it was by the distance between the front door and the back supply room. She juggled the bolts of fabric in her arms and hopped down from the stepladder she'd been on.

"Mavis?" She called out for one of the junior clerks, hoping that someone else would be able to attend to the customer. She'd been in the middle of pulling the materials she'd need to begin a specially ordered lavish gown later that afternoon. When Mavis didn't answer, she heaved a sigh and moved out of the supply room and towards the front counter, bringing the fabric bolts with her and setting them down with a heavy whump.

Wiping her hand across her brow, she turned her attention to the young man who'd entered and was looking around with a slight air of nervousness. "Hello, can I help you?"

Too late, he thought that maybe a tailor's was not the best place for a poster. Bugger. Well, he was here now, the worst she could say was no. "Sorry, I was ah...wondering if you allowed notices to be posted in your shop." Then, hastily, "I'm not selling anything, that is. Just trying to get a few more people for my...group."

Sarah took the paper the young man offered, scanning over it quickly. Oh, well that was a bit unusual... She wasn't sure how Madam Malkin would take to it. The older witch didn't have a strict policy about allowing people to poster in the shop, but still...she just wasn't sure that her boss would go for this kind of thing.

The young man seemed fairly harmless, however, so she decided to keep the poster and ask Madam M about it later. She gestured to the drawing. "I can't promise anything, but I will ask Madam Malkin whether she'll allow it. Is this your own handiwork?"

Gilbert smiled at her gratefully. "Yeah. I know it's a bit crap, but I thought having pictures might draw people's eyes?" He hoped her polite smile was not concealing thoughts like Oh Merlin this man could snap and kill me at any moment, don't make any sudden moves! He had an urge to reassure her, just in case. "I'm sorry, I guess it's a bit odd. It's just a board game my friend and I like, and it's better with more people...can't exactly go about the office asking people if they want to come and play a board game with you, that's all. I understand if you can't put it up." And I'm not a serial killer. He refrained from saying that last part out loud, as he did have some inkling of social interaction, however small.

Sarah lightly bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing. My, he does go on more than a bit. Still and all, the young man seemed more earnest than anything else, and she wanted to help him if she could. Looking more carefully at the poster, she caught his address at the bottom.

"No, don't worry about it," she hastened to reassure him. "I think you've got the right idea - it's always better to have something eye popping if you want to get attention."

She pointed at the bottom of the poster. "You live in Tinworth, then?"

"I do, yeah. You know it then?" He was a little surprised. It was a more or less established wizarding community nowadays, but it certainly wasn't a big star on the map or anything. "Nice peaceful place. Also not much on the streets for the Knight Bus to hit, which is always a relief when it pops by. I used to live close to Bedford, and whenever I rode I was sure I'd read about a Muggle neighbor that got offed by a disappearing bus the next morning."

He realized she probably didn't care to hear his life story, a bit too late. "Sorry, I'm inclined to ramble. I actually do have a question relevant to the shop, though. Madame Malkin's does take in custom work, don't you? I was hoping to get a quote on some robes. Er...sort of ceremonial, like."

"Mm...I know it quite well, actually," she smiled, "seeing as I live there." She stowed the poster on one of the shelves beneath the counter, making a mental note to ask Madam M about it later. "You're right, it is really peaceful...I've enjoyed living there. Moved in with a couple of school chums about a year and a half ago."

She mock-grimaced at his accounts of near misses with the Knight Bus. "That does sound a bit...unsettling, but you're quite right, Tinworth is much more...pastoral." She thought for a moment, "for such a small place, I'm surprised we've never bumped into each other before."

When he expressed interest in the custom robes, Sarah had to switch mental gears a bit. "Um, yes, we do take custom work...ceremonial, you say? What exactly were you thinking of? Is it for the...?" she gestured to where she'd stored the poster.

Looking at the young man, Sarah thought that perhaps, if he found Madam M's rates for custom work too pricey, she might see if she could get him at a lesser rate as a private client. She really needed to be building up more of a clientele if she ever wanted to get on with it and open her own shop.
