Vic's legs wrapped around Fleur's middle and her arms wound around her neck like a four-year-old book satchel, Fleur wove through the aisles of stalls, peering into those that had open fronts, though not lingering at any. They were in search of the petting zoo, where her own little monster could feed a carrot to a pony, after which Fleur hoped they would be able to poke around a bit more, as long as they avoided any krup breeders like Zeus pulling their hair. Little baby ones would be too difficult to resist, and she wasn't keen on taking one home to clean up after. Maybe there would be a Pygmy Puff display from Fred and George; a Pygmy Puff she could care for, when Vic would not.

She grinned up at Bill beside her, who had been somewhat less thrilled at the idea of spending the weekend with his wife and daughter amongst a wealth dangerous creatures. "C'es amusant, oui?" she said with a laugh.

Bill had been focusing on the displays around him, but when Fleur made a comment he looked down at her and gave a comically-reluctant smile. "Yes it is. You were right, as always." Bill knew his aversion to letting his family be around such creatures was a bit over-protective and pointless, but he couldn't help it. At least Fleur was around to keep him from being too overbearing, and he put on hand familiarly on her shoulder since her hands were full with Vic. The exhibit was apparently a hit, and Bill was rather looking forward to seeing Charlie and letting him know.

"So do we actually have any idea where this petting zoo is?"

"At the end Papa!" Victoire cried, bouncing against Mama's back and pointing to where the booths filled with animals stopped, and she could see a fence with a crowd. There was going to be ponies, Mama had promised, and maybe a unicorn and fairies. She wanted to try and take home a salamander to live in the fireplace; if there were a lot in the pen Vic thought she might be able to convince Papa it was a good idea to give one of them a home.

Bill laughed and pulled Vic off Fleur's back, partly to get her to stop bouncing on her Mama and partly just because he felt it was his turn to hold her. The fence had just come into sight, and he made a bee-line for it. He took Fleur's hand in his free one and settled Vic more comfortably against his hip. "What do you want to see first when we get there?"

Fleur squeezed Bill's hand, happy to see that everyone was having a good time, and fishing in her purse for the little pouch of coins she kept in case the petting zoo cost extra.

There was a short queue to get in the gates, the woman working them letting children in as others came out, and Fleur stepped in place behind the last person, surveying the animals on display. It was nothing particularly vicious, and each animal had a witch or wizard with it as well. "The unicorn, maybe?" she asked, looking back to Vic who was craning away from Bill, trying to see around the parents surrounding the fence.

They got to the front of the line and Bill put Vic down, trying not to snicker at the unicorn suggestion. He wouldn't be able to get near the creature himself, and he saw that it was a fairly common problem - there was a witch in attendance with the unicorn bringing children to pet it, while fathers and even a few mothers hung back in a group nearby.

There wasn't a fee to get in, and Bill held onto Vic's hands as he steered her toward the unicorn. "You want to go up with her?" he asked Fleur as they pulled even with the other waiting fathers. "I get the feeling I should probably stay back here."

Fleur nodded in agreement, though she felt a bit of trepidation mixed with the excitement in her stomach. She'd never been so close to a unicorn before, and truly, what girl wasn't at least a little enamored of them, even the Muggle ones. They were things of great stories, of princesses and knights, and were some of the purest magical creatures to this day.

How they would react to a Veela, Fleur knew not.

Happily, Victoire hadn't anything to worry about. The woman managing the unicorn laid oat biscuits or bits of carrots in the childrens' hands and let them, one by one, offer their snacks to the foal, who was dappled silver and gold. Victoire was both gentle and bold enough to give the mythical mare a soft stroke over her nose once she'd accepted the bribe, and came running back to her mother, face gleeful.

"I touched it, Maman!" she cried, looking around her mother once she'd reached her, to where her father stood on the other side of the paddock fence. "Papa, did you see?"

Bill just laughed and waved from his spot well back from the unicorn, waiting until both his girls came back and he could pick up Vic again and give her a noise kiss on the cheek. "I did see, it looked like she liked you. What do you want to do next?"

"Salamanders!" squealed Victoire, wriggling until her father put her back down, where she could tug him along by his hand. "Hold one, and then I will hold it for you."

If he liked them well enough, they could take one home. Vic focused all her hope on Papa declaring them - just as she was - good enough to keep.

Bill followed her with a bit of a sinking feeling, but let her drag him along anyway. His daughter had a four-year-old's grasp of 'keeping secrets' and he was well-aware that she wanted to take one home. He didn't know how to tell her that they couldn't do that, since doing it the straight-forward way - 'Baby, they live in fire' - didn't seem to do the trick. He gave Fleur a pleading look as they went, hoping she would find a way to get their daughter off her salamander kick.

There were salamanders at the petting zoo, all in a bonfire that no one was allowed near. A handler would coax salamanders out of the flames and hand them over to the waiting children, letting the kids hold them and feed them pepper. After a few minutes with each salamander the handler would take them back and put them back in the flames.

They joined the small group of people next to the bonfire and soon enough a handler was handing Bill a salamander. It was warm and dry, fragile-seeming skin and he carefully put the tiny in Vic's hands, making sure she didn't drop it or let it escape.

"Hello Gregory," Victoire whispered, as this is what she was determined to name her new found friend, and hopefully pet. He was perfect, he was scaly and crispy and his googley eyes stared at her as his tongue flicked out to pick up the flakes of pepper in her other hand. "You tickle," she laughed, letting him rest on her palm long enough to scratch his head.

Fleur smiled, though she felt horribly guilty. It was obvious how desperate Victoire was for a pet, and as she spent so much time with only her mother or father for company, Fleur could hardly blame her. If it weren't for the need for a ceaseless blazing fire to keep them healthy and happy, she would gladly acquiesce, but the thought of waking up in the middle of the night to stoke the fireplace was overwhelming.

"He's very nice," she admitted, "but you know Vic, they have to spend almost all the time in the fire, you wouldn't be able to play with him as much as a puffskein." Out of the corner of her eye she looked at her husband to help further ease the little lizard from her daughter's heartstrings.

Luna ambled along the wide rows of tents, passing the Kneazle breeders and the poor Niffler merchant whose booth was almost shaking with the barely restrained energy of his small, furry charges. Well, really, whose poor planning was it to put him opposite one of the food stalls? Every time someone took out money to pay for their food, it set off a frenzy inside the cages in the poor man's booth. Needless to say, he looked exhausted though the day's activities had barely begun.

With a sympathetic smile, she moved along in search of the more exotic creatures. She was covering the exhibition for The Quibbler and she didn't want to disappoint her father by missing out on the most unusual specimens. Rumor had it that someone had brought a Nogtail and a rare breed of miniature Wildebeest, and Luna was most excited to see the dragons later on.

Moving further into the fairgrounds she almost literally bumped into someone coming from the other direction. "Oh, excuse me!" she said brightly, with a smile.

Gilbert cursed himself for the oaf he was. "Sorry, there, I uh...was looking at the, er, whatsits." He waved vaguely at the sign over some lizardlike purple creatures that were eyeing him with more interest than he liked.

Then, getting a better look at the person he'd nearly jostled off the path, he smiled shyly. "Oh! You're with the Quibbler, aren't you? I loved your article on the Alohomora Conspiracy." The Quibbler was far more enjoyable than any Muggle tabloid with Elvis sightings, after all--because it was entirely possible that any given article was true, wild though it might be. Sort of a wacky magical tabloid roulette, if you will.

"That's quite alright," Luna smiled at the flustered fellow in front of her. She could well understand the giddy joy a show like this inspired - there was too much to look at all at once. Luna sometimes wished for owl's eyes when there was so much to see...her own could barely take it all in.

She was excited that he seemed to be a Quibbler fan, and even more pleased he'd liked her article. It had been quite a coup to get the inside scoop on the Alohomora Conspiracy. Her sources had confirmed only last week that a new species of house imp had been behind the plot to permanently damage door-locks across the magical community. Luna was particularly proud of that article.

"Yes, I am with The Quibbler, I'm Luna. My father and I run the paper together." Just then she thought she noticed something unusual about the young man's hair. Were those horns? She was most decidedly intrigued and decided to chat with him further. She didn't want to pry too early on though. She smiled again and gestured at their surroundings.

"What brings you to the exhibition? Are you excited about something in particular? I can't wait to see the Nogtail myself."

"It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Gilbert." He wondered if she was writing an article just now, and whether it would be on the actual beasts he was seeing, or something top-secret behind the scenes. Maybe she had a press pass to see all the really dangerous stuff.

"I actually came to see if I could find a friend for my dog. I thought about a Niffler, but I don't make enough that I can stand for all my unguarded change to disappear." He grinned his (hopefully) most charming grin and ventured the question he really wanted to ask. "So, are you getting a Quibbler exclusive here? Behind the scenes, and all that?"

"Really? I'm so glad you think so," Luna said brightly and in absolute earnest. People were often puzzled upon meeting her, or somewhat hesitant...but it was rare that someone was genuinely pleased to meet her. A few people she knew were happy to see her when they crossed paths, but they were usually people she'd known longer than five minutes. Gilbert was turning out to be most interesting indeed. "I'm happy to meet you too!"

She nodded when he mentioned finding a companion for his dog. "I do think a Niffler would be a bit risky." A particularly violent rattle shook the poor merchant's stall behind them, as the creatures in question had spotted a young boy who'd spilled his coin-purse all over the ground. She thought for a moment. "Double-ended newts would be too small and fire crabs generally don't mix well with dogs. I would personally recommend a jarvey if you don't mind the rudeness."

His grin prompted her to respond in kind. "Oh, yes, well...I'm here covering the exhibition for the paper. There are supposed to be some truly rare creatures here...and the dragon show is supposed to be spectacular. I have an extra ticket if you'd like to come."

That was a strange reaction to a greeting, but then again, it would figure that an owner of the Quibbler was a little strange herself.

"A jarvey? I hadn't thought about that. I wonder if they're difficult to keep?" He was already envisioning the amusement that would result from introducing a jarvey to Stan. The idea of them shouting imprecations at one another from across the house entertained him so much that he was almost resolved to purchase one on the spot. "I'll ask one of the experts if they do well with other animals, but I quite like the idea."

He hadn't really been intending to come for the shows and such, just to take a look around and maybe adopt a new pet, but the posters for the dragon show had really seemed quite exciting. Not to mention that the longer he stood here, the more questions he wanted to ask her about Quibbler articles and the writing thereof. "Oh, wow, that would be brilliant. Thank you!"

"Oh no, they're quite easy to care for. My father gave me one when I was little," Luna was delighted that Gilbert had liked her suggestion. "Most people don't keep them long because the insults get to be a bit, um, much...but if you treat it like a game, it can be quite fun."

She thought to herself that playing with her jarvey had probably made her early years at Hogwarts easier to bear. "I'd named mine Socrates...gave him a noble wizard name to live up to you know. I think he sensed he needed to live up to it. He was the most clever thing."

She smiled again when he accepted her offer of the ticket. She really was enjoying his company immensely and hoped that perhaps, if he felt more comfortable around her, she could ask him about his horns. He was almost more fascinating than a Snorkack.

Almost.

"Excellent! It doesn't start for a little while, so would you like to get a butterbeer while we wait?" She gestured to a stall a little ways down the path.

"I think my housemate would love it. Well, not love it exactly...love to hate it? Or...that's not it exactly. Secretly enjoy having insult fights with it, that's what I'm trying to say." Stan could probably just as creative as the jarvey, in his own way.

Gilbert stamped his feet and chafed his arms a bit, though he was wearing his nice winter wool robes. "A butterbeer is a brilliant idea. The animals may be warm, but I'm freezing." He tried to look slyly clever, but mostly succeeded in looking squinty-eyed. "I'll buy if you tell me how you got that exclusive about the giants' secret customs."

"You must have a most interesting housemate," Luna was most definitely intrigued by the idea of someone who would willingly spar with a Jarvey. This Gilbert must know some very unusual people. Unusual people delighted Luna.

She moved in the direction of the butterbeer vendor's stall with its brightly painted signs and line of customers and considered his offer. It might be her chance to find out about his horns without seeming rude. Luna never intended to upset people with her inquisitiveness, but sometimes they took her the wrong way. Normally, she didn't worry about their reactions. The people who mattered looked beyond her words and understood her intent. But...for some reason, she cared what Gilbert thought. She tucked this reaction away, promising herself to contemplate it later.

"Thank you, that's very nice of you! I'll tell you about the giants if...if you tell me one of your secrets." She smiled encouragingly. "It can be a small one..."

Gilbert chuckled, queuing up behind the rest of the people stamping their feet and rubbing their arms for warmth. "You drive a hard bargain. But how do you know I won't make something up?"

He really did want to know how she got the story, though. He had never imagined you could properly talk to giants, much less that they had a whole culture, completely alien to your average wizard, before reading that article. "Let me think for a second. A secret...ah...let's see..."

He grinned suddenly. "Right, you can't tell anyone this one. I work with experimental charms, yeah? So my boss, he's this kind of--he's a good sort of bloke, but he gets agitated so easily. Anyway this one time we were taking apart something really complex, lots of weird layers. And every time we'd unravel something, I'd quietly jinx his nose into different shapes, and blaming it on the charm we were dismantling. He still thinks to this day that the charm had something to do with facial reconstruction."
