Characters: Sarah Fawcett & Tracey Davis
Locale: Buttermilk, Padstow
Date: 16 November 2003
Warnings? Minimal.

The aproned woman behind the glossy counter at the bakery had likely had her fill of Tracey sniffing around the glass, all thumbprints and wide eyes like an eight year old, but Tracey was far from finished. What greater love had a single woman living alone with the foppish ghost of her Great Great Uncle than an evening paired with some hot, alcoholic beverage and indulgent sweets? Well, Tracey supposed there were many things, but as masturbation depressed her, she settled for chocolate.

"I'll have... that one," she decided finally, pointing to an almond-crusted something. But right behind it a jelly tart with shining glaze...

"Wait, no!"

Sarah strolled along the sidewalk, heading for the center of Padstow's small but bustling downtown. The bag from Larter dangling from her arm and swinging back and forth in time with her stride. She'd spent far too much there on developing solution and framing supplies, as well as a new set of Copic markers she really couldn't afford if she were honest with herself. But she'd had an idea for mixing some of her photographs with hand colored line drawings and she just couldn't resist...

...and besides, it had been a foul day at the shop, and she'd needed to treat herself. Which is why she was now making a beeline for Buttermilk, a new favorite discovery that made simply the best raspberry dark chocolate mousse cake she'd ever had.

Opening the door to Buttermilk, she slipped inside quickly and headed for the display case. She spotted the cake she was after just about the same time she spotted a familiar face. Thankfully, this one was not attached to a smarmy Slytherin male.

Not sure of the other witch's name, and conscious of their Muggle surroundings, she smiled and offered a bright "hullo! If you haven't decided yet, I have to say...the raspberry chocolate is really good. Sinful even."

Tracey recognized the witch from Madam Malkin's, though as soon as she'd placed her a memory colored with a few too many drinks surfaced, and Tracey grinned broadly. She'd slugged Terence Higgs, and no amount of tequila could banish that from Tracey's memory.

"And you've the measure of sin, have you?" Tracey asked with a smirk, gesturing to the bakery cashier to give her one of the two pastries she'd been eyeballing, as well as the raspberry chocolate.

"Umm..." Sarah couldn't quite place the other witch's tone, and she put in her order for a slice of the chocolate raspberry mousse cake and a cup of hot chocolate with a slight feeling of trepidation.

A vague, foggy memory of this woman's face paired with a ballet costume floated into Sarah's mind. Oh Merlin. Hallo-bloody-ween. "No, not exactly...well, um...depends on which sin..." she babbled uncontrollably for a few seconds before sputtering into silence.

Thankfully, the cashier asked for her money just then. She paid and turned to the other witch, finding her footing at last. "Let's just say, some sins are more justifiable than others, yes?"

She quirked an eyebrow at the other woman. "I'm Sarah, by the way."

Snickering at Sarah's defense as she imagined the witch unraveled her meaning, Tracey bundled her own sweets defensively within her coat. She would not eat them both, not tonight, but would have to go for a long run all the same.

"Tracey. And you needn't justify anything to me. I'm hardly an innocent bystander."

Sarah grabbed her cake and cocoa and moved towards one of the shop's small cafe tables, glad as she sat down that Tracey didn't seem to be judging her for having punched Higgs.

She looked up with a wry smile. "He was just so bloody full of himself. And..." She cut herself off, thinking the better of bringing up either his Death Eater background or his tendencies for groping unsuspecting young women. Opting for friendliness instead, she gestured at the chair across from her. "Would you like to sit for a bit?"

"Well, it isn't as thought he's known anyone who's gotten himself killed over his own ego. Oh, wait..."

Tracey chuckled ruthlessly at her own joke, taking the seat opposite Sarah and strongly considering sampling the jam tart wrapped in her coat.

"Mmmphrrstl!" Sarah spluttered into her cocoa as Tracey sat. Reaching for a napkin and wiping up the chocolate dribbles, she managed a grimace and a laugh.

"Yeah, he'd better watch out with the size of that thing," she paused in mock contemplation. "Of course, after being pressed up against him twice, I highly suspect it's the only large thing he's got...so maybe he should be allowed to keep up his delusions."

She dug into the chocolate raspberry cake with glee. "Mmm. I only found this place a couple of weeks ago, and I've already eaten entirely too much of this for my own good."

Suddenly she remembered something else about Tracey, "The tights? Madame Seraphima's? How've they been?"

Tracey had some difficulty following Sarah's train of thought, considering Sarah's exclamations over Terence's lack of endowment in the same moment and picturing him immediately in the colored tights she'd purchased from the witch a few weeks ago.

"Great, really..."

She trailed off, imagination run a bit wild before anchored with the pastry she recovered from her pocket.

"The girls at the school are desperate for them, unfortunately."

Sarah laughed at the look on Tracey's face. "Sorry. That came out of the blue, didn't it? I blame the cake...too much sugar scrambles my brain."

Still, it didn't stop her from digging in for another bite. It was just that good. "I am glad they're working out for you though."

She sipped her cocoa slowly. "Hm. You know, I'll have to check and see if they make them in youth sizes...we really should stock them if they do, we're missing out on a good thing there, considering the amount of damage a little girl can wreak on a pair of tights." Sarah gave a wry smile. "I know from personal experience."

"I can't say their Muggle parents would appreciate it," Tracey pointed out, though she realized it probably had not occurred to the witch that nearly all of Tracey's pupils were Muggles. She'd often wondered herself how it was she had studied magic only to end up where she was, hardly employing it but for housework and the occasional well-earned hex.

Of course, if Tracey had to choose Ministry work or dancing, she'd choose dancing.

"Oh, so you teach mostly Muggles, then?" Sarah said curiously. Truly, she hadn't given much thought to Tracey's pupils after selling the tights to the other woman. "Mm...true. Their parents might be a little freaked by self-stitching tights."

She paused for a bite of cake. "Still, I'm sure magical mums would find them useful." She smiled, "I know my mum would've been extremely thankful for them when I was growing up. I was a bit of a tomboy, and a terror when it came to keeping my clothes intact. I started learning to mend when I was tiny...and, well..."

She gestured with her hand as if to say "look at where that's led."
