Rodolphus glanced down for a moment, then back up at her, searching her eyes. He could see that she was scared but trying to make an effort to be here for him and make him feel better. He bit his lip and gave her a soft kiss, promising himself he would do anything in his power to make it out of this alive. He cupped her cheek and kissed her again, longer this time, and nodded. "I will," he said quietly. "I promise. I... well, I'll try." He gave her a small smile, then sighed heavily. "God, I hate this. As if it wasn't difficult enough for us already, now the bloody Dark Lord had to come back and make it even more difficult. If I didn't know any better, I'd just take you away but... leaving is not an option. I'm just going to have to find a way to deal with this and... come out of it alive. And make sure that other "innocent" people do too."
He realised that he might have to hurt - or worse, kill - Tonks' friends. He bit his lip hard and buried his face in her neck again to avoid looking into her eyes while he was thinking about that. How was he going to do that? He couldn't do that. Could he? She would never forgive him but if he refused he was going to be the one to suffer.
For some reason, he started thinking about Severus. He was still a Death Eater, of course, even though he worked for Dumbledore. But for years, Rodolphus had had the suspicion that he might not be working for the Dark Lord, primarily. And the way Severus had reacted when Bellatrix had brought up the subject of bringing Him back... Severus had seemed less than pleased, claiming it wasn't possible; that there was no way. Maybe Rodolphus should talk to him; ask which side he was really on. But in case he was wrong, and Severus still was completely loyal to the Dark Lord, Rodolphus would be in trouble. If he really decided to do that, to ask him, he would have to be very careful.
He shook his head and focused back on Tonks who was still sitting on his lap, her arms wrapped around him. He kissed her shoulder gently, then looked back up at her.
