Levity - it's not just for flying anymore
Who: Harry and open to friends and foes alike
What: Solo Quidditch practice
Where: The pitch
When: After classes
Warnings: None

There had still been no word and despite Hermione's none-too-gentle urging, he'd foregone studying this afternoon. And last night and the night before THAT. Not only could he not concentrate, but he just saw no point in even trying. Not even dire warnings about OWLS could move him.

Flying was the only thing that cleared his mind. The only thing that made anything at all seem better, and he spent more time on the Pitch than in the Tower. Anyone looking for him could find him there.

Luna had finished her homework and wandered down to the Quidditch pitch. After she'd spent some time with Oliver Wood a few weeks before, she'd discovered that there were some really interesting magical creatures living there and whenever she was bored, she tended to come there to watch them for a while. That was if she wasn't with the Thestrals, of course.

When she reached the pitch and looked up, she was delighted to see Harry. Taking a seat, she looked up at him and watched him for a while, admiring his graceful moves on the broom.

She waited for a while, then cleared her throat. "Hi Harry!" she called, waving.

Harry started a little at the voice, but looking down, he was happy to see that it was Luna waving to him. "Hey Luna!"

He circled the pitch once more before touching down near her. He was flushed and his eyes behind his flying goggles were bright.

Stretching and setting his broom down carefully, he came over to sit down on the bench next to her.

Luna smiled. "Watching you is so exciting," she said cheerfully, tilting her head as she looked at him. "I don't know anything about flying - except on the thestrals but I guess that's a little different - or Quidditch but... really, you're the best flier at school."

She rubbed her hands together; it was getting rather cold. "How are you doing, Harry?" she asked softly, looking at him with her big, grey-blue eyes.

Harry and Luna were having a fairly typical conversation,as conversations go ; she liked to watch him fly.

"Have you ever flown, Luna?" Harry didn't think he'd ever seen her on a broom.

Luna smiled and shook her head. "Not on a broom, no. I had the flying lessons in first year, of course, but after that I've never been on a broom again. I have flown on a thestral's back, though. It feels fantastic."

She smiled, then looked up, watching Ron for a moment before looking back at Harry. "Are you all right, Harry?"

"You've been ON one of those?" Harry was impressed. He personally found Thestrals creepy, but didn't find LUNA creepy, so it all evened out. "I bet it does - and that way you can experience flight. It IS awesome."

He gave her a little smile; he felt no need to pretend around Luna. "No, not really, but there seems to be damn little I can do about it, so fuck it." He sighed. "Sorry about my language. I just keep being told to be a good little boy while all around me, stuff is happening that I can't control and it's so bloody frustrating!"

Luna giggled. "Yes, of course. It's great. They're really quite gentle. If you like, I can show you how to fly them sometime."

She watched him for a moment and touched his hand gently. "I'm sorry. I can't imagine what you're going through. If you want to talk sometime or just... not talk at all, I'm always here for you."

"I didn't know that living people could fly them." Harry found Luna fascinating, no matter what she was going on about - it was never so much the subject matter as the fact that she was so intent on her topics.

He was touched by her concern. "That's really kind of you," he replied, thinking that if he was going to talk to anyone, it would be Luna - or Mandy, or Hermione, if he could catch her alone. Girls had this way of understanding emotional things. "I don't even really know what I'm feeling, to be honest."

Luna smiled. "Of course they can. You wouldn't see them, of course, but I could help you get on one and fly it. It's an extraordinary feeling. Very exciting."

She watched Harry thoughtfully, touching his hand. "Well, you've been through a lot," she said softly. "But I'm sure it'll all work out. It just seems hopeless at the moment."

He smiled at her and wrapped his fingers around hers, squeezing lightly. "I bet it is an amazing feeling, so thank you - I'd like to try it out. And I won't lie, it does seem hopeless. I don't know what to do anymore."

Luna smiled and squeezed his hand back. "Don't lose hope, Harry," she said softly. "I think that's the worst you can do. I'm sure it'll all work out in the end. Don't worry too much. Your parents wouldn't want you to, I'm sure."

She rubbed his hand with her thumb, then leaned over and kissed his cheek gently. "Just have faith."

"No, you're probably right - they wouldn't." He sighed and looked up at the sky. "And I'll try Luna, I really will."

He looked down at her hand on his and when she kissed his cheek, he turned his face so that her kiss landed on the side of his mouth.

Flushing, he caught her gaze.

Luna blushed a little as well, her already big eyes widening a little more. She didn't pull back and hesitated for a second before she pressed another soft kiss to the corner of his mouth and then another one fully on his lips. She felt her heard speed up a little and closed her eyes, hoping she wasn't doing anything he didn't want.

Harry didn't know if what he was doing was right or not - most likely NOT - but he kissed Luna back lightly, closing his eyes too. She smelled good and tasted faintly of peaches.

Luna's heart was racing and she kissed him back slowly, hoping what she was doing was okay. She had never kissed anyone before but had imagined kissing Harry often. And that he would really be her first kiss... She'd never expected this to really happen.

She lifted a hand to cup his cheek as she continued to kiss him, parting her lips a little to kiss him more fully.

Harry turned his body and kissed her back more firmly now, seeing that she wanted it, and it felt so good to kiss someone again - he hadn't realised how lonely he had actually been until this moment.

Luna slid her hand into Harry's messy hair, tangling her fingers in it and returning the kiss just as firmly. She licked Harry's bottom lip tentatively, turning her body towards him as well, her heart still beating fast.

It took a moment, but Harry finally gave up pretending to be tentative and snogged Luna thoroughly, propping himself up with one hand and cupping her cheek with the other as he kissed her.

He didn't know where this would lead and at that moment, didn't much care, either. He was, for once, totally in the here and now.

Luna let out a soft, surprised and pleased little gasp when Harry kissed her harder, and she kissed him back just as passionately, sliding her arms around his neck and holding him. She bit his lip briefly, then slid her tongue into his mouth again, still unable to believe that this was actually happening.

Ron watched as Harry landed and moved to sit next to Luna. He let his feet swing down, hanging as he let his eyes move from where the two sat to the rest of the stadium, and then off to the pitch. He liked this kind of weather to fly in; it was crisp and dry, but cold the faster one went. Ron brought his legs back up and took off, flying fast as he circled the pitch and tipped the nose of his broom up higher and then down to zoom closer to the ground and around.

After a few minutes of manuevering and soaring, Ron pulled up, breathing hard and feeling the bitter cold through his jumper and his flying robes.

It was colder than one thought, when you really started to taking off, he thought to himself as he rubbed his hands together and blew on the gloves with the fingertips cut off. There was no other way to hang on best, and the fast air made Ron's fingers freeze.

He thought about Hermione, and knew that if he could get her up high enough in the air, that she'd could help caste the warming charms to help keep them both warm. But he wasn't planning on rushing her; teaching her made him think about his past, and all of the great memories he had of learning to fly the broom. He wanted to make those kind of memories for her, and give her plenty of confidence.

He let his eyes turn back to Harry, and Luna and he wondered what they were talking about, and if he should fly down to find out.

Harry looked up and waved at Ron; he had noticed that Ron was intent on getting Hermione to fly, and wished him good luck with that; he knew she was terrified of flying and if Ron could change that, then brilliant!

"Looking good mate!" he shouted, his voice carrying on the wind.

He would never have believed that Luna could respond to anything aggressively, but she was, and it was all the better for the surprise of it.

They stayed locked in that position for what felt to Harry to be a very long time before seperating, both needing air. Harry swallowed hard and looked down, before looking back up at Luna's flushed cheeks. "Wow."

Luna nodded, panting a little. "Wow," she agreed, still stroking Harry's hair gently and looking at him curiously.

He flushed under her gaze. "I, uhm, probably wasn't supposed to do that," he said softly, his words catching a bit. "I mean, I don't know if I'm still supposed to be with Mandy and then to kiss you when I know Neville likes you, is ... well."

He swallowed and looked down.

Luna watched him thoughtfully, her fingers still sliding through his hair. Then she tilted his chin up and looked into his eyes. "I like you, Harry," she said softly. "And I know you have Mandy, and I probably shouldn't have kissed you back. I'm sorry. If... If you regret this, then we will never talk about it again."

She paused, swallowing hard and looking down, her hair falling into her face. "But I will never forget it."

Harry gazed back into her eyes. "I don't regret it - and I don't know if I have anyone, really, anymore." He chewed on his lower lip. "I like you too, Luna, and this is my fault. I ... hell, I don't know anything this year. It's like my brain left without a forwarding address."

He reached out and gently tucked her hair behind her ear. "I won't forget it either - I don't want to."

Luna looked up when he touched her, searching his eyes. "I don't want to forget it either," she said softly.

She cupped his cheek and gave him another soft kiss before reluctantly pulling back and standing up. She touched his hand gently and looked down at him seriously. "I should go," she said quietly. "I don't want you to get in trouble with Mandy, or anyone else. Find me when you know... what we're going to do about this. If we're going to do something about this. You know how I feel, and I think you feel the same way, but you still belong to someone else."

She gave him a small smile. "I'll be waiting for you, Harry."

She leaned forward and kissed his cheek gently, then walked away, thinking about how Harry's lips had felt on her own.

Harry watched her walk away until she was gone from view. Then he lay on his back on the Quidditch pitch and looked up at the sky, as though the clouds would form a symbol that might give him some sort of answer about what he should do ... cause he had no clue.

No matter what happened now, he would hurt someone, and all because he wanted someone to love and to love him.
