Figuring Stuff Out
Who: Harry Potter, Mandy Brocklehurst, open to others if they come along
What: Hanging out, maybe flying

Where: Quidditch pitch

Harry had talked to Mandy a little bit in her journal entry, but he still wasn't sure where everything stood, and he was still more than a little upset that no one seemed able to give either he or Lily any sort of leads. It was frustrating, and HE was frustrated. Also antsy and highly annoying to be around, he was sure.

He had his broom with him and sat down on one of the benches with a deep sigh.

Mandy made her way down to the Qudditch Pitch with her broom slung over her shoulder, she had to admit that she was thrilled to finally see Harry. She felt like it'd been way too long, all things considering. She saw him sitting down on one of the benches as she entered the stadium, and she noticed the tension in his body right away. She moved across the grass and dropped her broom, moving to set her hands on his shoulders as she sighed a bit. "How're you doing?" she asked, softly.

"I'm doing alright." She said, smiling softly as she moved to rest herself against his back and rest her chin on top of his head. It was something of a stretch for her short frame. "I'm not too thrilled about how close hufflepuff came to beating us the other day. Thinking about how to improve." she chuckled. It was a win, but she didn't like the margin. "More or less?" Mandy asked curiously with a raised eyebrow, she had to admit she was a still a bit nervous for him and nothing had really seemed to change, or at least that she had noticed.

"I'm glad to hear it," he replied, reaching up to touch her cheek. "And it's hard to tell whether it's more or less - it tends to change from moment to moment. Maybe I'm just crazy."

He turned his face up to hers. "I think you guys had a great game, but it was close; Huffle has a decent team this year."

He tugged her down to sit beside him on the cool bench. "Sorry, I should have brought a blanket to sit on; it's freaking cold out here."

"Ah ha, so you don't want to fly.. Glad I came prepared." Mandy chuckled, pulling the bag off her back. She pulled out her blanket and rolled it onto the ground. "I was kind of hoping I could convince you to camp out with me instead of flying, for once." She pulled out a bag of sweets and waved it as she flopped down on the blanket with a smile. "I know it's crazy, but after the game I'm still tired, and I think I threw my shoulder out. Megan has a hell of an arm on her and managed to launch one right at me. I wasn't prepared." The bag she had dropped behind the bench continued to move slowly, as though something were inside it.

Harry looked at the blanket and bag in surprise, then smiled at her, a real smile. "You're brilliant. You were SO sorted right."

His expression turned concerned when she mentioned her shoulder and being tired, and knelt down beside her, touching her shoulder gently. "Where does it ache? Have you seen Madame Pomfrey for it?"

He moved so she could sit against him and rubbed gently.

Mandy leaned back against him, smiling softly as she did so. "Thank you, My family has been in the same house for centuries so sometimes I wonder if the sorting hat just puts us all in one place for the sake of its own sanity." she chuckled, as she sighed softly. "You should really consider a job as a massage therapist, just so you know." she laughed, opening her eyes as she heard a rustling. She glanced under the bench, sighing as she a small bird pulling at the grass. "We've been followed." she laughed, watching him tug at the longer strands on the pitch, nibbling away happily.

He looked around her at the bird. "Well, better him or her than others I can think of."

He kept rubbing. "I'll keep the massage therapist position in mind - if I can't start concentrating on my studies, I'll be taking over Filch's job when I graduate and considering myself well-off."

He took a break for a moment to drop a kiss on her chilly cheek. "Same with my family - all Gryffindors, all troublemakers, except Mum."

"Edward is a he." Mandy said, as the bird glanced at them, making sort of cry as it glanced at Harry. She shook her head, hoping she didn't have to separate the two of them this year, she was hoping for no more stitches. "And who else would follow us? We're a rather boring lot." she teased, with a soft chuckle.

"You're a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for, Harry." Mandy said, not amused with his assessment of his skills. "You make most people look like fools in Defense Against the Dark Arts." she said, knowing he'd grown up around it. But he was still light years above the rest. "I'd always pegged your Mum for more of a Ravenclaw."

"I know, right? Mum is brilliant, but she's also tough and brave - that must have tipped the scales in Gryff's favor."

Edward was staring at him, and Harry stared back - this rivalry with a bird was ridiculous, he knew, and at this point he was more into amusing Mandy with it than actually plotting against a small fowl. "That bird has issues," he said, and the bloody bird glared at him.

For some reason, that made him laugh and he realised it had been a while since he laughed - other than at Ron's color-changing private areas.

He thought for a moment about Mandy's comment. "DADA is one thing, but I just can't concentrate lately, you know?"

When he felt her muscles relax, he stopped and moved beside her, leaning his head on her shoulder and nestling it there. "I understand tired, trust me."

"I just want to know why he doesn't like you." Mandy chuckled, amused as the bird continued to pull at strands of grass. He occasionally glanced at Harry as though he was suspecting him of making some sort of move against him. He ruffled his feathers as he stared at the two of them. "It's no wonder you can't concentrate, Harry. Look at what's going on in your life! No one came blame you for that." she said, glancing up at him as she pressed a hand against his cheek. She was thrilled to see him laughing though, even if it was at Edward.

"He senses I'm a competitor for your looooooooove," Harry replied, still snuggling. "And he knows size trumps attitude this time. I don't blame him for being irate in my presence."

He slid his arms around her. "The professors are cutting me some slack - except for Snape, of course - but there's only so much they can do. I still have a responsibility, and since the dance, my brain's been mush." Harry touched her cheek. "I'm so sorry about the dance, Mandy; you looked beautiful and I was, AM, so proud to be with you."

Mandy chuckled, pressing a hand to her mouth as he drew out the word 'love'. Edward never took a back seat to anything, every time she was in her room the bird was by her side. So maybe he was right on that account. "Of course you have a responsibility for school, but your first responsibility is your family and they're hurting. Even Remus." she said, and she couldn't help but feel affection for him, he just seemed so kind and personable-- even in the few minutes she had met him.

"It was fun, Harry. I'm so sorry it had to end on that note." she whispered, her features turning a bit pink at the mention of how she looked. She was going to thank him for that when she saw Edward make a dash under the bench and move towards them, nipping angrily at Harry's shoe.

"Hey!" Harry jerked his foot away. "Look you little bugger, you get her every time she's in her room and *I* get her outside the room. When she lets me. So sod off!"

He shook the persistent bird off and sighed. "I'm hurting and Demon Bird bites me. I think I'm being a given a message from on high or something."

He shook his head. "So, what would you change about the game then?"

"Oh for Merlin's Sake, Edward.." Mandy said, trying not to sputter with laughter at Harry's assessment. She felt like she was in the middle of a custody battle. "Don't mistake Edward for the divine, he's just an emu." she said, biting her lip as she patted her lap and he climbed into it, making a circle before he curled into a ball. She ran her hands over the feathers, as he seemed quite contented.

"Maybe it's very poor sportsmanship of me but I under-estimated Hufflepuff, and I expected a bigger gap." Mandy sighed, shaking her head. "Which is foolish and was my first mistake, you should never underestimate the other team."

Harry scowled at her lap and couldn't believe the bird had won. HE wanted to be on her lap and wondered if he would crush the damned thing or if it would bite his ass.

Probably the latter.

He flomped back on the blanket instead, keeping all his limbs away from the spoiled rotten demon bird.

"I rather expected that myself, actually, but Megan and Wayne are good and they worked together well, which hasn't been the case with Huffle before."

Mandy couldn't help but smile down at him as he flopped down, her eyes scanning over his face. Sometimes she felt very lucky just to be with him, and she wondered how long they'd been constants in each others lives without ever noticing this kind of connection.

"I should've expected it-- new leadership and everything." She shrugged, pursing her lips a little bit. The next time Ravenclaw played it would be against Gryffindor, and for a moment she wondered how that would turn out. She felt almost unnerved.

"I need to buckle down and be a coach to my own team," Harry sighed. "I've been a little preoccupied. So tomorrow I'm kicking their arses, and my own twice as hard in practice."

He looked up at her. "Next game is our houses - that's going to be weird, huh?"

Harry reached out and put his hand on her back, down near the base of the spine - away from the bird - and rubbed gently, watching her face.
