Who: Lily Potter and Severus Snape
What: Pre-Dance conversations
When: Evening-- Before the Dance.
Where: Severus's Office

Lily had arrived early at Hogwarts, and though she was made up and wearing her new gown she still looked a bit pale and sickly. She'd been looking for James for a week now-- she knew something wasn't right when he didn't come home and when he didn't contact her. Then, she'd decided to go to the Ministry of Magic. He'd left work, and he never came home. The whispers were that he was dead. How could he be dead? It just didn't make sense. How could she tell Harry his father had disappeared, or that his father was dead?

There was one person left who might have the answers she was looking for, or may be able to get those answers for her. She made her way down to the dungeons, hoping that Severus had heard something, anything. If he hadn't, she didn't know what she would do. She was almost as terrified as heading back to his place as she was of knowing the answers to her questions.

She stopped at his door, hanging her head and taking a deep breath before knocking. Here we go..

Severus had been standing in front of the mirror when he heard the knock on the door. He sighed, grimacing at his unsatisfying image in the mirror. He had bought a new robe, something unusual for him, very elegant, but he was unable to see the way it made him look more handsome than his usual, even softening his features.

"Come in." he said, opening the door with a flick of his wand. He watched her walk inside, and his heart got stuck in his throat for a moment.

His jaw clenched the next second, and he bowed stiffly in a cold greeting. "What do I owe to your visit?" he asked, looking to the side, he needed to make it quick, he didn't want Charity to wait for him.

It was very difficult for Lily to pretend that everything was normal as she entered his chambers, and she did her best to keep her head down. Because even though she was wearing make-up she knew that people would be able to tell that she'd been crying, that she was upset. She didn't even know why she had decided to come to this dance. But sitting at home and waiting hadn't been an option either.

"I.. don't know how much you talk to your old friends." Lily said, her voice accenting 'friends'. Because she didn't consider them friends, they had destroyed him, pure and simple. "But.. James is missing." she said, turning away from him. She folded her arms under her chest. "They think he's dead, actually." she said, her voice choking. She refused to cry in front of him, but she could tell he was in a hurry and she didn't want to keep him. Especially if she was going to break out into uncontrollable sobs.

"I just.. wondered if you'd heard anything. Any of them bragging or something." she whispered, sounding broken.

The words had a weird effect on him. On one part he was outraged, furious she would come back to ask him something like this, something about James Potter nonetheless, the man who had ruined his life just as much as Voldemort. Of course, she wouldn't know, she never realized, or she just never wanted to think about it.

“I am hardly in contact with any of my dear friends.” he hissed unpleasant, how dare she think he was still in those people's circles? Did she think he would go drink with them every thursday night or something?

Another part of him though, deep down, was worried, he knew she had been crying, he could feel the certainty of it crawl of his skin as though it had been him shedding tears, and he knew that James had changed, he wasn't the arrogant Black or the pathetic Lupin, he was the one who had saved his life in the shrieking shack eons ago.
Plus, he was Lily's husband, and he didn't want to see her shed tears, for no reason.
“I've got nothing..” he said finally, more gentle, but powerless, his mind starting to work, trying to find out a way to investigate the matter.

He still had to get used to it, that to her he would always just be a mean, an instrument to get what she really wanted.

It was safe to say that Lily felt like something of an idiot for asking the question-- it seemed like she was always asking something of him! it wasn't like she was asking him to go find information though, she was just curious if he'd heard anything. Oh, who was she kidding? It was the same damn thing, and he'd go digging if he had too! She shook her head, not bothering to look at him-- she was too ashamed. "I figured, I know you don't associate with them anymore. It was a dumb thing to ask. I'm sorry."

So that was it, was she to sit around and wait until a body turned up? Was she supposed to tell Harry? Go look herself? Her head was swimming with all the things she felt like she should be doing. "I should go." she whispered, her voice sounding choked. Maybe this whole dance thing wasn't a good idea after all.

He looked at her sadly, she clearly was upset, but there was nothing he could do until after the party. “I wouldn't lose hope...” he said, walking closer, a tentative hand placed on her shoulder, squeezing it softly. “He is a too precious prey for them not to make it public that he fell...” Direct, cruel, but that was Severus Snape.

His fingers moved up her neck, delicate: “What you have to do now, is keep an eye on your son, we both know he's the real target... James will come around...” he muttered and tapped her chin. “You are stronger than this, Lily... don't disappoint me.”

And he offered his arm, he could be of support for now.

Lily took his arm and she attempted to put on a brave face; if for Harry than nothing else. She would have to tell him at the end of the evening, she would not ruin this for him. She was terrified though, that

He did make a good point, if he were dead someone would be talking about it. But even though his logic made sense, she still couldn't help the feeling terror in her gut. "You look nice this evening." she smiled softly, with a bit of sadness still on her face.

“I'll keep an eye on him.” he promised, as if he needed to say it to make it true, he didn't need her to ask, he would always be there one way or another, even though he didn't wish to be. “Don't lose yourself in desperation before it's necessary...”

His mind came to a sudden halt as he heard the words. He looked nice? He shook his head: “I'm not.” he said, stirring her out of the room and flicking his wand to close the door behind them.

Lily couldn't help but laugh a little at the 'I'm not' comment as she moved out of the room. "Only you would find a way to make that into an insult." she chuckled softly under breath. She glanced at her watch, something she always kept on her because of her work, and sighed. She needed to find Sirius and Remus, she needed to talk to them. "I'll see you around, Severus. Thank you." she whispered, meaning those words from the bottom of her heart as she moved in the opposite direction. First, to get some air.

Severus' head tilted a bit to the side, he couldn't help but wonder whether it was true, that he had turned that to be an insult. He pursed his lips, he just didn't even consider the fact he could be attractive. He used not to even hope he could be. Now though, he was hoping he could be, somewhere deep down, and he really didn't want to think too much into it.

He looked at her at the greeting, and nodded: “Good night, Lily...” he muttered, letting go of her arm and watching her move away for a moment, before he turned towards the great hall.
