Although Remus had advised Delia to be patient, he could see the dynamics of the pack shifting in subtle ways. Ethan had not been challenged - yet - but the schism between him and those who wanted to break away from Voldemort was growing wider, in spite of Remus' assurances that Ethan had the best interests of the pack at heart and was indeed beginning to consider alternatives. Those who were eager to make the break were young, and Remus supposed that had had a lot to do with their impatience. Ethan, in their view, was old and set in his ways. Remus knew, however, that Ethan was stubborn, but not stupid. He preferred to deliberate at his own pace, which might not be the best pace to suit the young ones, who wanted change now.
So many variables, Remus thought with a quiet sigh as he perched on a fur-covered rock that served as a makeshift chair and watched Delia and Andrew circle one another, teeth bared. It wasn't a dominance battle - not this time, at least. The young ones had decided to spar with each other in order to hone their fighting skills, which Remus thought was a good idea in theory. They would need more than brute strength to defend themselves if Ethan did end his alliance with Voldemort. But Remus could see the potential under the surface, and he suspected they were helping each other prepare for the time when one of them would challenge Ethan.
"The pups are playing." Ethan's voice interrupted Remus' somber thoughts, and he glanced up, offering a half-smile.
"So it seems," he replied, leaning his chin on his fist.
Ethan settled beside him and watched the scene before them for a few moments before turning to study Remus. "You seem troubled."
"A little." Remus shrugged, watching as Delia darted in to claw Andrew's belly. She was strong and quick, and that would give her an advantage, even over larger males. "They've never worked together like this before."
