Rose smoothed back her blonde hair, deeply aware of her dark roots and the fluttering of her stomach. This man had to be wrong, had to be confused. Her boyfriend? No...She would never look at anyone who wasn't the Doctor, and if this man was anything like the Doctor, he would never look at her.

What if he was some echo of those things that attacked her mind, made her think the Doctor was back and dismissing her out of hand? She smoothed her hair again, and checked that her gun was within easy reach.

Rose jumped as the knock came. Just one, less enthusiasm than she might have hoped for. Could she and he really be?

Well, there was one way to find out, and that was to answer the door, so why the hell was she terrified of what might be said by the man on the other side of it?

She ran her hands through her hair once more and moved to the door, stunned as she took him in. "Hello"

	John stopped looking around the corridor as the door opened, smiling as she came into view. "Hello." His smile faltered slightly at the lack of the familiar stream of thoughts and feelings filtering into his mind from hers before he reinforced it. "Oi, clearly I'm not just a severed hand thank you very much," John huffed, folding his arms across his chest.

"Look, I...I mean he was regenerating but he used the hand to store the excess energy so I...he only healed rather than fully regenerated," he explained, softening his tone. "Then later after Donna touched it...instantaneous meta-crisis...aka Me. And yes, we are."

John swallowed, ducking his head and absently rubbing his chest as it tightened at her words. Even though he had been expecting them and had heard them before, they still hurt like hell.

He sighed softly, trying to keep the hurt from his voice and face. "Yeah, well...good job I can technically be classed as him then." He winced slightly at the curtness to his tone.
