Severus woke abruptly, aware that he was not in his rooms at Hogwarts but unsure of precisely where he was. He lay still, his eyes closed, looking to all intents and purposes as though he was still asleep. Even as he lay there, he was listening intently, trying to get some idea of where he might be.
He could smell dust and the musty scent of old rotting things and he could hear the creaking of what sounded like wood walls and floors. The confirmed his waking thought that he was no longer in Hogwarts. His rooms in the dungeons were silent and cool, stone walls, floors and ceilings with the scent of potions and potions ingredients prevalent in the air from his teaching and endless experiments.
He could not hear the sounds of people however so he slowly opened his eyes. He sat up with a frown, suddenly realising where he was. It was a place he’d only seen as a teacher. Or at least a place where he’d only seen the inside as a teacher. He’d seen the outside as a student several times on Hogsmeade visits. He was in the Shrieking Shack.
A scowl grew on his face. What idiocy was this? If it was something the students did, they were going to pay in ways they couldn’t imagine. And if it was something Albus had done, for that irritating old man had a pawkish sense of humour, then he would make Albus’ Gryffindors pay until he was told to stop.
He got to his feet and brushed the dust off his robes, frowning when he saw the dark stain on the floor. It looked like old dried blood and he couldn’t imagine where it had come from. The last time he’d been in here that had not being there on the floor. He shook his head and stalked out of the room.
He stormed up to the castle and a wave of his hand had the doors flying open. Albus had something to answer for.
