Emlyn Delaney considered herself to be always friendly, mostly fearless, and full of good faith. She tried to treat others well, always work hard, and never take more than she was willing to give. She had learned her work ethic from her parents and her faith from Danu Llewellyn, but her sunny and optimistic disposition was all her own.
Growing up, life had seemed so idyllic. She helped on the farm, played with the animals, went to church, and played in town. But as she continued to get older and take on a bigger role and more responsibility in the farm that would one day -- hopefully, unless Lord Belmont didn't want the Delaneys to be his tenant farmers anymore -- become hers, she began to see the things she had been too young to understand. Budgets, workload, a lord who wanted more for less. Not too long ago had been the wages cut for all of the Aurellian staff, and just when Emmy felt like their family was starting to adjust to that (thanks, in part, to Emmy's extra income from working for Antoine), now a bunch of chickens got out and went missing.
Emmy had tried hard to find all of them, but she hadn't been able to. She'd only recovered a couple, and while her parents told her not to worry about it, she was determined to take care of it. Her parents were getting older, and she saw how her father's back bothered him, and her brothers had wives and lives of their own. Emmy did as much as she could to help, but if Lord Belmont asked them to pay back the cost of losing the chicken, Emmy knew her parents wouldn't ask her for help, even if they might need it. They thought she gave too much already, but Emmy didn't. Emmy wanted to help.
So, she took action by writing in her journal. She was trying and save some money by putting off a fancy dress she was going to get Reagan to make her for no real reason other than she wanted it, but did not need it. She also asked Lord Tucker what he was going to do about the chickens so she could prepare.
And now, she was going to try and see if she could make a little more money, which was what had brought her in to the Palace on a Sunday afternoon, still dressed in her nicest clothes from Service. She came inside, smiled at all of the employees she passed, and headed straight for Antoine's office before she second guessed herself.
Knocking on the ajar door in quick, light, cheerful raps, Emmy popped her head in and smiled her biggest, brightest, warmest smile as she said, "Hi boss! I know I'm not working tonight, but I wanted to talk to you. Think you can spare a moment for me?"
