[Assignation] [Uchiha Itachi and Hyuuga Neji]
Who: Uchiha Itachi and Hyuuga Neji
Where: The Hotel, Itachi's apartment, and places in between.
Summary: Itachi has contracted some of Neji's time; for what, Neji has no idea.
Rating: PG - for now.
Warnings: n/a

The Hyuuga had, over time, acquired the ability to dress quite well, and on his assignations he often took this to the next level.  For all that he was formal in mein, he kept his wardrobe simple; a kimono, with hair worn long over his shoulders, or if the night was to start with an excursion to a club (he had been contracted for such, to fill out a party or make a rival jealous) tight-fitting pants and a shirt with the top buttons undone.  His outfit at the debut had set the tone, and certainly with the size of his closet, Neji had no trouble impressing, no matter who he was with or where they were going.

So when he had heard that Itachi had contracted him--Sasuke could not very well keep it secret, and Neji needed to know anyway--Neji had known precisely what to wear.  His outfit was somewhat dressy, in that he would't look out of place if they were going out to an upscale restaurant, but it was casual enough to acknowledge the fact that they were passing familiar with each other.  To be honest he was somewhat upended over this assignation.  He'd thought more of Itachi, but men were men, and Uchihas were all the same, regardless.

So he waited in the lobby of the hotel, managing somehow to lounge without looking sloppy.  His hair was pulled out of his face but fell free down his back in lovely brunet sheets, each strand glistening with care in the light.  A car coat was beside him on the couch.  With an expression of serenity on his face, Neji ignored the murmurings that started whenever someone caught sight of him.  By now, most patrons of the hotel who came from the certain circles of the metropolis that they catered to knew his appearance, and they knew what his presence downstairs meant.

Let them guess, Neji thought.  It couldn't hurt.

Itachi had taken care, this day. He'd made sure his apartment was acceptable-Itachi was not a messy person but he'd needed to catch up on dishes and straighten the laundry hamper in the bathroom-and spent most of the afternoon cooking. Nothing fancy-Itachi was by no means a chef-but something that wasn't likely to offend even delicate tastes.

Cornish game hens stuffed with something sweet, but only just, and baked just so. Veggies. Wine. And cupcakes-yes, cupcakes. He'd long since forgotten what they were called but remembered how to make them-dark chocolate batter with a cheese cake batter smacked in the center to give it a rich and creamy taste. He'd set it all out under heat lamps to keep it warm, straightened his shirt (Silk and buttoned up the front, offset by his blue jeans and bomber jacket), and headed out.

And, much to his surprise, he was nervous. And excited. He enjoyed the Hyuga's company more than he would like to let on and was looking forward to taking up his evening and night with the mundane. Dinner, wine, talk, chess maybe, if it came to that. A movie, perhaps. He would happily take Neji somewhere in town if staying in wasn't up to his taste.

Upon arriving at the hotel, he had lingered in the car, wondering if he should call but decided against it. If he had to go find Neji, he would just ask the front desk and wait.

And it only occured to Itachi as he pushed through the doors and saw Neji to wonder if Sasuke had extended the details of what Itachi wanted Neji for.

Neji rose gracefully, turning to face Itachi as he entered and bowing. There was a slight awkwardness that he hoped did not translate to his movements. The same familiarity that prompted the casual dress also made him unsure of his standing with the other man. Was he an equal, or just a pretty face that Itachi had intended to bed all along?

"Itachi-san," he said respectfully, rising, stormcloud-gray eyes sweeping up the other's form as he rose. He'd found that a number of his patrons liked the gesture, whether Neji was actually sizing them up or not. With Itachi it was surprisingly easy to do, and not a bad view either. That gave him little comfort even so.

Adjusting his dark blue shirt (mostly buttoned this time, though he'd left off the tie and had the car coat instead of a dinner jacket), the Hyuuga smiled a bit. "Good evening."

Itachi gave him a small smile, unsure if the formality was just Neji or not. He'd not missed the sweep of Neji's eyes but pretended he hadn't-the brief flittings of lust tempted him and Itachi squashed them. That wasn't what he was here for...

"Good evening, Neji. Are you ready to go?"

"I am." Neji stepped to Itachi's side, looked up at him sidelong--another trick he'd picked up quickly. The glimpse of gray irises through dark lashes seemed another point of excitement. "Though I must say I'm curious what you have in mind for us."

That last was not a trick; Neji had not been filled in on the details of the assignation, and had thus assumed that Itachi wanted what his other patrons wanted, but there was none of the coiled desire that the other had radiated. Only a strange calm from this one.

For some reason, that disappointed him.

Itachi watched the Hyuga and then started back toward the car, keeping his pace even so he wouldn't leave Neji behind. "Mmh, Dinner at the apartment." He shoved his hands in his pockets as he strode, pleased to be out of the hotel. "A quiet evening-wine, if you'd like."

Really, that was as much as he'd planned. He'd rented a couple of different movies-horror, comedy, thriller, documentary, whatever looked interesting in the slightest-since he didn't know Neji's taste. Had chess. He'd hoped food and talk and company would be enough-what he really wanted was to just give Neji a night off and away from the hotel, from eyes that would look at him like meat.

And if all else failed, Itachi had a lot of nice wines and hard liquor.

Neji almost frowned in thought, but kept it off his face as he walked beside Itachi, head held up. He'd been contracted for many things, but simply being someone's company--now, that was a first. It wasn't a wholly unpleasant idea.

"I think perhaps I would like some wine." His voice held a sardonic tinge. Busy had not been an apt term for his schedule; he was booked, nearly solid. At least one commission a night, if not more. He felt he was becoming far too familiar with the inside of one of the limos that the escorts used, far too used to the feeling of others' hands on his skin. "And the quiet."

"I suspected as much." Itachi jogged ahead a few steps to open the car door for the pale eyed boy and turned back to look at him. He hadn't talked to Sasuke about his plans to make this a regular thing but wasn't so worried about it anymore. When he had initially requested Neji's time, Sasuke had not reacted as badly as Itachi had thought.

And perhaps that was because Itachi's plans were not to sleep with the boy. Not that the thought hadn't crossed his mind. He just didn't plan on it.

Something full of amusement crossed Itachi's features as the thought about Neji's clothes and how not conducive of lounging they seemed. That was fine. Itachi had some extra pajama pants at home.

And then it occured to him that this could be compared to a teenage girls sleepover and that was not quite so funny-it was disturbing in a fundamental way to his masculinity. Uchiha Itachi was not a teenage girl.

Pillow fights were not allowed on this train.

"Thank you," he murmured, sliding into the front seat and buckling his seat belt. Refreshing to be able to see where they were going.

The awkward feeling was back, the sensation of being pulled in two different directions at once. It wasn't that Neji doubted that Itachi was being completely honest when he said he simply wanted a quiet evening; the Uchiha didn't seem inclined to lie about such trivial things, and there had been no trace of it in his voice besides. Rather, he was troubled, because his time brought a price, and Neji did not like to think that Itachi had to buy it.

Itachi hurried around and into his seat, all too happy to slide the behind the wheel and get them away from the hotel. Start, gear, check, road.

He settled back into his seat. He liked his little black pontiac. A lot. It wasn't a fancy car. But it was fast. And shiney.

And his speakers were very, very nice.

"You can stay with me until tomorrow, if you like." He didn't glance over but wanted to badly. He'd already decided Neji would take his plush, pillowy bed and he would sleep on the couch. It was also soft and plushy-but it was a couch. And had not even considered to let a guest sleep on the couch. It just wasn't a good idea.

He glanced over, surprised. Neji never stayed with any patron, partly because they contracted him for a specific event or for a certain amount of time, and partly because Sasuke had never before permitted it. Neji knew full well how possessive the young Uchiha was of him, and had never thought to test the limits on this particular rule.

"That depends," he said slowly, thinking on how to couch this. "On how good you are at convincing people to your point of view." There. Indelicate but it would do.

Now he did glance over. He'd seen Sasuke's face when he'd asked but he also knew that Sasuke knew he wasn't manhandling his precious.

He knew exactly what Neji was talking about.

"He wasn't angry when I asked for your evening. He knows you're safe."

"I'll think about it." Neji glanced over, met the Uchiha's eyes, his expression now sly. "You're welcome to give me more reasons to stay, of course."

Now that he was thinking about it, he relaxed a little. Itachi and Sasuke knew each other well--obviously--and if there'd been doubt, the commission would have been turned down. But still... "Did you pay Sasuke to let me come have dinner at your apartment?"

"No." Itachi smiled faintly. He'd offered and Sasuke had told him no. It had meant a lot to Itachi to have some company and, for some reason, Itachi thought it would be important not to manhandle Neji for Sasuke's sake.

He hadn't missed Neji's sly expression and wasn't sure if he was being playful or flirting.

He just couldn't read the Hyuuga very well.

That relaxed him further, and the small smile that played about his lips did not leave. "Good. I would have asked him myself for your payment back if you had."

After a moment spent watching the buildings go by, Neji looked over again. "What are we having for dinner?"

"Cornish game hens, steamed veggies, and cupcakes for desert." He could see his building up ahead, surrounded by trees planted for their shade on the sidewalk. "And wine."

Good wine. Probably better than the dinner wine.

Itachi pulled the car out front of his quiet building and killed the engine. "Hm, I'm not the best cook so be prepared."

"If you cook for yourself often, then I doubt we've much to worry about. You're still here after all." Neji was looking around; he'd never been in this part of town before, and was still learning that there was a whole huge world outside of the small spheres he'd known with the Hyuuga family and under Sasuke's auspices.

"Though," he said, looking forward again, "There is the matter of building up a tolerance to poison that should not be overlooked."

Itachi gave a soft snort and stepped out of the car. It took only a few seconds for him to walk around the car and open Neji's door. "It's not that bad."

He gestured at the door. "I'm on the top floor."

"I'm sure it's not." Neji rested his fingertips on Itachi's arm briefly, pushing himself up. It amounted to little more than a fleeting touch though, as he shrugged the coat on. It was yet chilly, even in the city. "I will enjoy it."

He made a little gesture with hand and head, indicating Itachi could lead the way.

As fleeting as the touch was, Itachi relished in it and felt guilty for enjoying it. Touch.

So, as he moved to lead the way, he let his hand brush along Neji's back-much more obvious than an arm touch and more lingering than it should have been. To look at Itachi's expression, however, one would never guess he'd done it intentionally.

He had to suppress a shiver. His back was one of the most sensitive areas on him--granted, it encompassed a large area, to be sure, but when it was touched in such a way, in the way that Itachi had touched him, well, it made his knees weak.

But Neji followed obediently, expression not betraying how his nerves thrilled up and down his back. It would pass.

The inside of the building Itachi lived in was not nearly as grand as the hotel-it was simple quiet. White walls. Blue carpet. Windows at the end of long hallways with alternating doors. Stair cases that seemed lovely lead up from awkward places.

Itachi ducked around a corner near the entrance door and hit the button for the elevator. There wasn't much of a pause, perhaps two or three seconds, before the elevator dinged and opened.

Itachi stepped in and turned to look at Neji, trying to see if there was anything in the other mans face that said anything about that touch.

Neji had only a glimpse of the inside of the building, then he stepped into the elevator and leaned against the wall. It was a very cool gesture, but it covered up the fact that Neji's legs were still slightly wobbly, and he took calm breaths until they felt strong again.

"Is the view from the top floor any better than that from the bottom?" he asked, as a way to distract himself. It was a silly, obvious question, but he needed to get his mind moving again.

This seemed to amuse Itachi. The entire western wall of his apartment livingroom was windowed. It over looked a park and much of the city. "Sometimes."

Itachi smirked and turned to face the door as the elevator dinged. "Only sometimes."

As the doors slid open, Itachi reached out to place a hand lightly on Neji's lower back, to guide him out and down the hall toward the last door on the left. The apartment.

And there it went again. Neji bit his lip, the pain distracting him from the gentle waves of pleasure rippling up and down his body, and let the pressure of Itachi's hand guide him down the hallway, pausing to let the other man open the door and using the time to steady himself with some unobtrusive breathing exercises.

Itachi swung the door wide, allowing the view of the livingroom to find them. The far wall was all window-giving a rather nice view of the park and buildings beyond. His livingroom was very simple-one almost overly plush couch, a rather modern coffee table, and a large, flat screen tv settled happily on a glass television table. Little inklings of Itachi's personality were unobtrusively placed around the room-on one shelf, a single picture of the family as a whole-mom, dad, two brothers-posed for a formal picture. Another of only the two Uchiha boys, much younger, much happier, playing together.

A long painting of running horses on another wall-nothing expensive, something from some local painter Itachi bought at an auction. A small collection of carved marble figurines were placed at random around the room. An acoustic guitar sat in one corner. Books lined almost every other shelf.

And that was, essentially, the extent of Itachi's livingroom. The rest of the apartment followed much of that same simplistic principle.

"Can I get you a drink?" He brushed past Neji and began taking off his coat. He didn't feel the need to make that formal in, stop, close the door, gesture. He didn't want to be formal. This was his home.

Blinking to clear his head, Neji shut the door and followed suit, shrugging off the car coat and hanging it up beside Itachi's. "Water, please," he called, and stepped out of his shoes before stepping out of the foyer and onto the cream-colored, plush carpet. His stocking feet sank in a little as he crossed to the windows and looked out over the city. It was growing dusk, and the sky in the west glowed yellow-orange while overhead it was a beautiful deep blue. The lights of the city lit up, long illuminated avenues radiating out to the horizon.

From there he wandered around the edge of the room, running a finger over the spines of the books. All subjects, it seemed, though there were some that had to be textbooks from the police academy. His fingers dropped into air, and his eyes slid over, stopping when he saw that there was a picture there--four people, all of the same mold. This must be... yes, there was Sasuke's hair, spiky even then, and eyes that were much brighter even in the stiff pose he was in. And across from him, father's hand on his shoulder, was Itachi.

Serious even then, Neji thought, staring at the picture. He wondered what it was like, to have family there for you--there long enough to be remembered clearly by you.

Itachi slipped away to the kitchen to grab Neji a bottle of water and slip his shoes off. He checked the temperature of the food-still alright-and padded back to stop halfway across the room.

His eyes were drawn to the picture that so had Neji captivated. He'd kept that photo because his mother looked so healthy in it. It made him happy to think of her that way, to see her that way. And his father...just a skeleton on a backdrop now.

His father had had so many big plans for Itachi. Too many.

"Dinner is ready when you're hungry, Neji." He padded the rest of the way over and held out the bottle of water.

"Then we should eat." Neji took the bottle of water, opening it and taking a sip. Now that he was reasonably certain he wasn't going to be pushed onto his back, the adrenaline that had accompanied each assignation was ebbing, leaving his mouth dry. "Your apartment is very nice."

He almost asked how a cop made enough to cover the costs on this, but stopped. Itachi is an Uchiha, too, though he does not participate overmuch. Pausing as he passed another picture, Neji smiled.

"You and Sasuke were happy then." It wasn't a question. Neji took in Sasuke's smile, and thought about the Uchiha's confession to him in the coffeehouse. How difficult was it to whore out someone you wanted?

Itachi turned slightly too gaze at the picture too-looking at he and his brother, children then, smiling, playing.

Doing what children should do.

He reminisced often, alone and sometimes slightly buzzed, on his childhood. Even then, they were being smothered in expectations. But sometimes, they would find time to be unruly. He smiled, forgetting, for a moment, Neji was there. He could remember, quite clearly, Sasuke asking him to play with him because he'd 'promised to.' And how irritated he was when Itachi prodded him in the forehead.

All of it was out of love.

"We used to be close." His own voice surprised him with the bittersweet tone so evident. He glanced at Neji, wondering if he'd heard it.

"I'll go set the table." He turned then and made his way back to the kitchen to do just that.

Neji watched Itachi's back as he left, dark ponytail dividing the man's back in two, and then looked back at the picture of the two brothers, much younger. To be so close to family--it was an alien concept, to the Hyuuga.

"Do you need my help for anything?" he called, leaving his mental wanderings and padding after Itachi. It felt odd to not be the subservient one, to be served rather than to serve. He'd offer what skills he had, though in the domestic sphere these were more than somewhat limited.

"You're a guest here, Neji." He didn't look back, hearing Neji behind him.

The kitchen was done in cherry oak and faux black marble. It was tidy but certainly lived in. Everything suggested that Itachi didn't cook here much but kept it well stocked-various iron wine holders adorned counters, low slung cabinet lights made the counters glitter... It was all very Itachi.

Except for one cookie jar-shaped like a happy and cartoony cow-set by the microwave.

Itachi busied himself with pulling plates from this cupboard, cups from another, cutlery from yet somewhere else. He set them on the island, in the middle of the kitchen, next to the array of food under the heat lamps.

Once everything was in its place, he leaned against the counter and looked Neji. "Hope you're hungry."

Neji's eyes widened. "You made all that?" He walked over, looking at the array under the lamps. It certainly smelled good, made his mouth water and his stomach growl just to look at it. There weren't any obviously under or over-done parts, and at the very end--ah, cupcakes!

He looked up again at Itachi, opened his mouth to speak--and then something caught his eye, and he couldn't help cracking a smile. "What is that?" he asked, distracted by the completely out-of-place cookie jar.

Itachi turned, his whole body twisting, to see what Neji was so interested in. He let out a soft chuckle and took the two or three steps over to the cookie jar. "White elephant gift."

He lifted up the lid and the happy, large eyed cow let out a long, loud 'MooooooooooooOOOOOOooooo.'

His face was full of simple amusement when he looked back at Neji, lid still in his hand. "Macadamia nut cookies." Without looking back at it, he set the lid down.

Neji had nearly doubled over in laughter, and when he finally straightened, his silver eyes glittered with mirth. It was incongruous to the point of absurdity--the last thing anyone would expect in Uchiha Itachi's kitchen was a mooing cookie jar.

"That," he said, still chuckling, "Is... awesome. Let's eat."

Now that the ice and awkward was broken, Neji was a little more relaxed, starting to see this as a social thing than work. He started off by grabbing one of the cupcakes and putting it on his plate, then taking a little of everything else until his plate was full.

Itachi followed suit, grabbing what he wanted and shoveling it onto his plate. On his loop back to the table, he snagged the bottle of wine and two glasses.

It would serve his purposes well-this wine. He planned on having a long, relaxing evening.

With cupcakes and wine.

He sat down after he'd set the glasses and bottle down safely and stabbed at his food with a fork. It smelled nice to him and he was glad he'd not had a snack before dinner.

"Steam rising from it generally means that it's hot." Neji smirked a little, but blew on his bites before he put them into his mouth. Ah, he hadn't had home-cooking in... well, ever, really. It was delicious and he found himself happily shoveling food in his mouth in a most undignified way.

After a minute or so, though, he calmed, leaning his forearms on the table and looking at Itachi. "It's very good. Thank you."

Neji picked his glass up delicately and made a show of going through proper wine aficionado posturing (one of his recent clients had been some aging yuppie who had taken Neji along with her to every single winery in what felt like the whole country) before taking a sip. It wasn't the best of vintages, but it wasn't wholly unpleasant either. The lights burned a little brighter, but that was it.

After a while he felt he should make some kind of conversation, being the great wit that he was marketed as, and set his fork down. Where to begin? Usually he got briefed on every client and had had time to read about and brush up on information pertaining to their recent exploits, but Itachi was about as... well, normal, an assignment as he could get.

Well and so, Neji thought. Normal it is.

"Has work been quite busy lately?" he asked, taking another small sip of the wine.

Itachi didn't glance up from his food, but something that might have been amusement crossed his face. Being a cop... There were so many cliche things he could say to that simple question.

'Crime never sleeps,' was, he could remember, a favorite of crime fighting comic book characters.

Except he couldn't see himself proclaiming that-not without something sharp or full of bullets pointed at him. Itachi did fight crime-bad crime, as he saw it: Rapists, murderers, abusers, molestors, sometimes thieves (if they struck him in a way he didn't like)-that was bad crime.

But he was involved with men who committed other crimes-crimes he overlooked and sometimes took part in.

All for the greater good of...what? The Uchiha? Himself? Sasuke?

All of it.

Now he did look up, still holding that amusement on his face but it had turned darker, almost snarky. "Only as busy as it should be." He took his own glass of wine, swished it once to watch it swirl, and took a long sip. Was Neji trying to make conversation? Did he want to talk?

Itachi supposed he would-if it was what his guest wanted. But he was going to steer clear of Neji's 'work.'

"How do you like the city?"

"This part of it?" Neji sat back after sipping his wine, trying to disinter what that expression meant. It wasn't the neutral expression, or the vague amusement that Itachi most often wore. Perhaps he had erred in trying to put to use the wit he'd been raised with?

"I'm learning my way around," he said quietly. Many of his patrons had offices or flats in the vicinity, and they would host lavish parties at which Neji was arm candy and a treat for later, while the wife or husband was out of town. "There aren't as many parks in this area as the area where the Hyuuga are, but there are enough to escape to."

After that he fell quiet, eating his food in small bites and pushing it around his plate. That expression--rueful? Sarcastic?--had unnerved him.
