Damon was happy to be back in normal Las Vegas. Well, the new-normal Vegas. He still didn't understand how this place worked or why he was there but he didn't mind the new-normal Vegas all that much. He had the pretty Elena Gilbert all to himself.

Damon hadn't fed in awhile and while it'd be easy for him to find a human to feed from, there was one human in particular that he wanted to quench his thirst. He had been feeding from Elena quite regularly and giving his blood to her when he accidentally might have taken a smidgen too much. After feeding from Elena he would compel her to forget that it happened and all the two did together was hang out. Damon got what he wanted and Elena was none the wiser to it. It was a win win, really.

Damon headed to Elena's room, he knocked on the door. He could hear her heart beat through the door and he could already taste her blood. Damon fought back his vampire instincts, crossing his arms and leaning against the door frame as he waited. Good things come to those who wait, right?

Elena, too, was happy to be back in new-normal Las Vegas. The post-apocalyptic landscape they'd been stuck in had been terrifying, though it had been worse still when Damon disappeared and she had been left there on her own. Regardless, they were both back now and she was quite happy to spend time with him. He was growing on her, bit by bit, something probably helped by the fact that everyone from her future mentioned how they wound up together eventually. It had given her a lot to think about, especially her conversation with Klaus' daughter.

It took her a moment to answer, moving from her position in a chair, reading. Laying aside the book, Rlena peered through the peephole. Speak of the devil. Smiling, she opened the door, stepping aside to let Damon enter if he wanted to. If he had a keen eye, he might have noticed a new necklace gleaming against her skin.

"Hi, Damon. It's nice to see you."

Damon had teased his brother about returning to Mystic Falls to meet Elena, the doppelganger and Damon had originally returned just to be a pain in the ass to his brother and steal the girl away from him. But after spending time with Elena, he was starting to feel something more towards her. He was still the massive flirt he was known to be but he couldn't help but wonder if he was starting to fall for her.

Damon gave Elena one of his famous grins as he walked into her room. "How are you? After coming back from wherever that place was?" Damon was concerned. He had tried his hardest to keep her safe while they were in that place. Anyone who was going to hurt her would have had to go through him first.

Damon turned and faced Elena and his eyes immediately went to the necklace. "That's new." He commented. "Where'd you get it from?"

"I'm alright," Elena answered with a shrug, letting the door shut behind him. "I'm glad that we're back here. That place..." Her voice trailed off as she tried to find the words to describe it, finally shaking her head. "When you disappeared I was worried something had happened. I'm just happy that we're both okay." And she genuinely meant it. He may have been Stefan's brother and not at all who had caught her eye first but he was here and he was sweet and charming. He'd taken care of her, protected her from a lot of bad things. And, if Hope was to be believed, they ended up together in the future. Was that really such a bad thing?

"Hmmm?" It took her a minute to realize what Damon had been referring to and her hand automatically rose to the necklace. "It's pretty, isn't it? Klaus gave it to me. He said something about a friendship gift since Caroline and I are so close."

Damon instinctively looked Elena over, looking for any injuries but he was satisfied when he saw none. "Yeah, I hope we don't return to that place anytime soon. Damon moved around her apartment, looking around. "I hated that we were separated. I much rather would have preferred that you were sent back here first." Damon could protect himself and he was more durable than Elena.

Damon stepped closer to Elena, his eyes focused on the necklace. When Elena told him where she got it from Damon's eyes narrowed slightly. It didn't take a genius to know why Mikaelson had suddenly gifted Elena the necklace but he wanted to try something. "It's definitely something." He looked at Elena, attempting to compel her. "Take it off."

"It doesn't matter anymore," Elena answered, though she was smiling at his words. It was so sweet of him to put her well-being first. She really was starting to fall for him.

But she blinked at the request, frowning slightly. "Are you alright? Your eyes..." There was something about them. They were weird but Elena couldn't put her finger on what was off about them. And she definitely didn't move to follow his request.

"I know you will," Elena assured him, eyes full of trust. He had watched over her when they were transported to a strange place, Elena didn't doubt that he would watch over her no mater what happened.

He didn't want her to worry about him but she did. How could she not when he was being such a protector for her? Elena wouldn't press it for now but her eyes were definitely on him, studying him. She would watch over him in exchange.

"Ummm...not too long ago. The last day or so. Why?"

He saw the trust in her eyes and he bit back a frown. If she knew that he had been using her as a source of food and making her forget about it, she likely would have a different opinion. But even if she found out and ended up hating him for it, he'd still watch over her and make sure that she was safe.

"I just though that he was dating blondie. Usually boyfriends don't bring jewellery for other women."

"He is dating Caroline," Elena nodded. "And she knows all about the necklace. He's trying to be nice, Damon. That's all." She was certain Klaus wasn't interested in her that way at all.

"I think they picked it out together." And she obviously didn't have any problems with it. Though Damon certainly did.

"Hey..." Her hand stretched for his. "It doesn't mean anything, I promise. He loves Caroline and even if he didn't I wouldn't be interested in him."

Damon briefly wondered if the necklace was Caroline's idea and Klaus facilitated it. It didn't really matter who was responsible as his fun was now ruined.

Damon watched as Elena took his hand before his eyes moved to meet Elena's. Did she think he was jealous? "I know that." Damon made scoffed, trying to make light of the situation and direct the conversation away from the fact that he definitely wasn't jealous.

"You're not interested in Mikaelson? Big, bad Original vampire?" Damon gave a small grin. "I can see why. The guy has the ego the size of the entire planet." Klaus' ego was almost as big as Damon's.

Elena's grin widened at that. "It's not the ego." Because obviously Klaus wasn't the only one with an ego. "He's just not my type." Oh sure tall, British, and very charming but even if he wasn't with Caroline there would have been something about Elena and Klaus that didn't match up.

"And he's not the person I've been spending all my time with either." If Damon caught her drift. Her other hand moved his, cupping it between hers. "You've been watching out for me. You care about me. And...it's not exactly a one-way street there."

Damon looked at Elena. He wasn't jealous. Not in the least. Maybe if he told himself that enough times he'd convince himself of that fact.

Damon curled his fingers around Elena's hand. He definitely caught her drift. "Of course I have been watching out for you Elena. I promised to keep you safe when we got here and I'll be damned if I let anything happen to you." He moved closer to her, leaving little space between the two of them, his eyes trained on hers. "You're the most important person here."

"I'm hardly the most important person here," Elena disagreed, though the smile didn't fade from her features. He was just incredibly kind to say as much. "But I do appreciate you looking out for me, Damon. It means a lot." She knew that he would never let anything happen to her.

Elena smiled up at him a moment longer before deciding to take action. Leaning in, her lips gently brushed his cheek, right at the corner of his mouth. "Thank you," she murmured.
