Entry tags:casi, matt, unfinished

WHO: Casi Adams and Matt Alvarez
WHEN: Monday, February 9; early evening after Matt's
WHERE: The Cafeteria, study rooms
WHAT: Matt and Casi do a little studying
RATING: PG
STATUS: Incomplete.

All through Matt's private lesson, his stomach was growling. All he could think about was getting to the cafeteria and getting something into his system. His lunch period was spent trying to get extra help from his French professor so he wouldn't have to repeat the class over the summer or, God forbid, next year at any point. He didn't want any reason to have to be away from New York any longer than he had to be.

Once he'd been released by his private lesson teacher, he flew to the cafeteria, bypassing going back to the dorm and grabbing anyone to eat with. Hunger clouded his vision. So off he went, trudging through the cold, wishing he was back in the city on his way back to his apartment instead of a dining hall.

Once inside, he grabbed a tray and began loading it up, tomato soup and two grilled cheese sandwiches. Once he got his water, he walked ino the seating area. He was all set to sit by himself, but he saw Casi. A smile crept up on his face as he walked towards her. Her notes were all over the table and he remembered they had a test for Urban Geography coming up. "Hey, Casi...is it okay if I sit here?" he asked, letting his tray hover over the table, just in case she said no.

Casi had elected to be relatively unproductive today. It was Monday and she was tired, so why should she bother to overexert herself when she really just needed a nap? And so after she had written in her journal she had fallen asleep in her dorm room for a few hours, her homework left untouched. She would get to it once she woke up, but for the time being? Sleeping and rejuvenating herself was more important right now. It wouldn't do her any good to be drained out of energy while she was trying to do her homework or practice for dance. It would only develop into stress which would then develop into a cold.

She had woken up just as dinner was beginning and she unzipped her backpack to grab her binder for Urban Geography. Casi tucked a pen into the pocket of her jeans and exited her room without another glance behind her. Her stomach rumbled loudly as if it wanted to make a point that she was starving. Once she had gotten into the cafeteria, she chose a table that was empty and placed her stuff down onto the table before getting into line to get her dinner.

She had been eating for nearly twenty minutes by the time that Matt had approached her while she was scribbling something down in the margins of her notes. She had to pass this test. Casi glanced up at him and smiled as she brushed her hair out of her eyes and tucked it behind her ears. "Yeah. Go ahead. I'm just studying for Urban Geography."

"Cool, thanks," he said as he sat down. She was scribbling furiously and he sort of watched her in astonishment as he took his first bite of food. It was like her notes had their own system of working, every bit of paper being used. "Yeah, I completely forgot about that until I saw you studying," he swallowed and chugged some water.

It sucked that she hadn't come to New York, he had a feeling she'd be down for seeing all the stuff that wasn't a tourist hot-spot. "Did you have a good weekend?" Maybe he shouldn't be interrupting her, but he felt weird just sitting there watching her study.

Casi nodded and went back to looking at her notes. She scribbled down a few more things before lowering her pen to take a bite out of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. At least peanut butter itself hadn't been recalled yet, right? She'd probably die without being able to eat it. "Yeah, you should probably get on that. I don't think that it'll be really hard but it's better to study and be prepared rather than failing miserably, right?" she asked in an attempt to look on the bright side. It was a shame that there was never really a bright side to studying.

She shrugged when he asked about her weekend. "Yeah, pretty good. It was nice not having Juliette there. I don't hate her but she has a tendency to drive me crazy pretty much all the time. It was pretty nice being able to have the room all to myself," she grinned in remembrance of her own weekend and then turned to him. "How was New York? Eventful?"

"Yeah, I probably should," Matt frowned. He was really hoping to be able to work on his music assignments longer tonight, but that wasn't gonna happen. "I don't like to fail," he smirked and took another bite of his grilled cheese, dipping it into his soup. "If you want a study buddy, you know where I live."

Being alone in the room for a whole weeknd seemed odd to Matt, he couldn't wrap his head around being totall alone for 48 whole hours. He'd probably go crazy. "New York was good. Reminded me of how much I missed it there. I saw the Philharmonic, which was amazing. We went to the club after, some people got illegally intoxicated," he whispered conspiratorially, "and uh, Jenna kissed me," he mumbled before shoving food into his mouth, laughing a little to himself. He was glad they'd talked about it and were able to move past it, but it definitely was one of the more eventful parts of the weekend.

Casi always wanted to work on her dancing, but she knew that there was always a time and place for that and this just simply was not one of those times. She needed to concentrate on her studies right now and that was exactly what she planned on doing. It would be nice to have someone to work with, though. "Yeah.. that could work. After we eat, maybe?" she suggested with a shrug.

She smiled when he began to tell her about his weekend. "Oh, Philharmonic. That sounds pretty cool, actually. Does it ever get boring, though? I think that something like that might bore me. I'd want to go walk down Broadway or something. See the bad parts of town. Though ice skating would be pretty fun too. Then again.. you'd probably fall right on your ass, huh?" she mused aloud and ran her fingers through her hair again to move it out of her face. She took a sip of her water as he continued to talk and nearly choked on it when he mentioned Jenna kissing him. For some reason it bothered her slightly, but she mostly just thought that it was hilarious. "Jenna? Brunette Barbie?" she mused with a snicker and returned to her notes. "She's convinced that I want to be her friend or some crap like that. So when are you two eloping, then?"

His grades were alright. He wasn't a straight A kind of student, but he wasn't anywhere close to failing out, either. He wasn't always in the honors society every semester, and he wasn't really up for many awards. But his mother was proud of him no matter what the grades on his report card said. Having a study bddy could help out his Urban Geography grade at least. "Yeah, if you're not up to anything, we can do it right after we eat."

He had to laugh. The bad parts of town. "I don't know of anyone who would willingly wanna see the bad parts of town. That takes a strong stomach and a can of pepper spray." He picked at his grilled cheese when she snickered. "Yeah, no, it'd definitely not like that at all. She was drunk, I was stupid, and it's never gonna happen again...so that's that." He halfheartedly smiled and changed the subject. "So did you do anything exciting on your weekend alone?"

Casi nodded and let her hair fall between them to act as a curtain. She really wasn't used to people wanting to sit with her, really, and therefore this was an odd situation for her to be in. Maybe he just wanted help to study? She did do rather well in that class, after all, and maybe he knew that? "Yeah, I'll help you study. My grades are usually decent for that class," she replied at last, now doodling aimless circles upon the paper.

She took a few more bites of her sandwich while he talked about his kiss with Jenna. Casi really did find it amusing, but she was trying to be nice. It was a shame that she was chuckling beneath her breath at him. "So I don't need to get a dress to wear to the wedding then? I expect to be invited, after all," she grinned and looked up at him from beneath her eyelashes. "I think seeing the bad parts of town might sober some of the students up, though. I mean.. life isn't all daisies and rainbows, and I think that it would be pretty cool to see how other people live," she shrugged and took another bite. "I.. danced around my room. But that was pretty much it."

"Very cool," he smiled an resumed eating. He didn't really know why she seemed to be blocking his sight of her but he shrugged and pretended that he didn't find it strange. She wasn't like 99% of he girls at this school, he shouldn't expect any different.

Ugh, did she have to press this issue? "No, I wouldn't go picking out dresses for anything," he mumbled, trying not to smile. She really was enjoying this. He finished off his dinner and leaned forward on the table to look at her. "You'll have to come to New York with me some time, you can get a feel for the real gritty parts of Manhattan. I don't think some of the kids from more 'affluent' families would know what to do with themselves." He couldn't imagine some of them, in their private cars, even driving through some of his surrounding neighborhoods. Or, God forbid, take the subway. "Dancing around your room, I'd say, is a pretty good way to spend a weekend alone. No one to bother you or anything."

It made her feel awkward to have people looking at her, even if they were in conversation. He was nice and had yet to be rude to her or talk about her behind her back, but that didn't necessarily mean that he wouldn't do that at some point when he got to know her better. If he got to know her better.

Of course she had to press this issue! "Damn. I'm sure she was betting on you marrying her on Valentine's Day. You know, you're probably letting the little girl's hopes down," she grinned cheekily and took a sip of her water. "How did you stand her long enough to kiss her though? I was with her for about ten minutes and wanted to suffocate myself," she shrugged. The girl seemed nice, sure, but she was annoying. "On a school trip with everyone else? Don't take this the wrong way but.. no thanks. I don't think I could be stuck with all of them for an entire weekend. I like having my room to myself for once in awhile." She finished off her sandwich and shoved her plate away from her as she chewed through the large piece of bread she had stuffed into her mouth. Casi swallowed roughly and turned back to look at him. "Yeah. The Ettie-monster can get aggravating at time. But that's okay. I kind of like it when she nags me about my eating habits. You ready to go?"

Maybe it was from working at the deli that Matt found it easy to have a conversation with just about anyone about pretty much any subject, even if he didn't know about it. And a lot of that involved eye contact, so he felt somewhat odd that she didn't always look at him when they talked. Maybe she was just uncomfortable because they weren't as close as some other people were...he was just hoping they'd get to that point.

"No, nothing planned for Valentine's Day. Homework. Music...that's about it." He'd really wanted to muster up some sort of courage to talk to Chase, even a little, but he doubted that would happen any time soon. It was seeming more and more to be a lost cause. "She's really nice. And she's crazy good at the violin. I dunno, I get along with her pretty well," he shrugged back. Not everyone could be the best of friends, he guessed. "Not on a huge school trip, but if you ever find yourself in Manhattan, I'm offering to be your personal tour guide to the New York no one else bothers to look at." He took one last sip of his soda and got his stuff together, putting his coat back on. "Ettie-monster?" he asked as he stood up.

Casi was really only comfortable talking to her family about everything. Matt was pleasant to be around and she felt a certain connection with him because they both lost their father, but that didn't mean that she was ready to be 'best friends forever' with him. That sort of thing took time and she was confident that he would give up on this pity friendship he was forming with her soon enough. Most people did, after all, so why wouldn't he do the same?

"Homework and music on Valentine's day. Sounds like the perfect way to spend it if you ask me," she grinned and shoved her chair back by digging her heels against the floor. "She might be nice but she's really annoying," she shrugged. What did she care what Jenna thought about her? Or even what Matt thought about her for not liking the girl? It wasn't like it would be the end of the world if they disliked her, because frankly? She didn't care. ...Right?

She smirked and shrugged. "I don't know. I'm usually stuck here most of the time so there's really not a lot of time to go to Manhattan on a whim or anything. But thanks." Casi grinned again and shoved all of her notes into her binder and hugged it to her chest before plucking up her pen. "Juliette. She calls me 'Cassie' so I call her 'Juliettie'. She's my roommate," she explained and pushed her chair in with her foot.

If he wanted to be friends with Casi, he knew he'd have to put in more effort than usual. There was something about her that intrigued him, maybe it was the fact that she didn't really associate with too many of the people at school...usually if Matt didn't know someone, he could t least get his information from someone else. He was willing to put in the effort, though. She was nice, a little odd, but he kind of liked her litle quirks. "Jenna's not that bad, but, hey, sometimes personalities clash. Can't win 'em all," he shrugged.

As they started to walk, Matt laughed at her reasoning behind giving Julitte her nickname. "So I take it you two aren't BFFs?" he laughed. "Well, if your whim ever takes you New York, you know who to call," he offered with a smile. they were greeted by a blast of cold air as they walked back to the dorms. He shivered and crossed his arms around himself.

Casi enjoyed spending her time with Matt if she was being honest with herself. He was a sweet guy and completely nonjudgmental. And best of all? He wasn't running in the other direction. In fact, it seemed as if he was trying to get to know her. Just the mere thought of that made her grin. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have an actual friend here, after all. He could play the piano brilliantly and it was so incredibly easy to dance along to his music that it was nearly impossible for her to even think that she didn't want to be friends with him. If nothing else she could perform with him.

She walked beside him and struggled a little bit as she tugged up her pants to prevent them from falling down. "Definitely not. She's annoyed by me and I'm annoyed by her," she grinned and rolled here eyes. The girl could be a flake sometimes. Casi hugged her binder to her chest as the cold air greeted her and she shivered as well. "I don't have your phone number," she pointed out. "Jesus it's cold."
