Who: Rose and Lavender
When: Thursday, 26 February (backdated)
Where: the offices of Miss Witch
What: interview!

Rose had dressed carefully that morning, pulling out a proper interview skirt and jumper. She'd tucked her CV into a nice folder so she could look somewhat professional, and then made sure she arrived at the offices of Miss Witch several minutes early.

She stepped through the door cautiously, looking around and taking note of everything in this first glimpse. She thought she ought to check in with the receptionist, but oh! Right. She was interviewing for that position, so there likely wasn't one already. Uncertain, she held the folder against her chest and looked for someone who might be able to help her out.

Coffee. I could really go for some coffee. Lavender stretched her hands above her head, the sleeves of her flowing light blue robes falling down to reveal her bare arms. Shaking her head to clear the tension that had gathered after sitting for over two hours straight, Lavender rose to her feet. She stepped out of her office and began to walk down the hall towards the little break room in the back. She passed the door which led to the reception room and then, three steps past it, she stopped. Had she caught sight of someone standing in there?

With a hint of confusion furrowing her brow, Lavender backtracked and peered into the room. "Oh, hello!" She said at the sight of the witch, who was dressed very nicely and carrying a folder. Now who... Lavender blinked, and then glanced up at the clock on the wall. The interview for the receptionist! Shaking her head at how she always managed to lose track of time, Lavender strode into the reception. "This is why we need a receptionist!" Lavender exclaimed with a laugh, "I'm always losing track of the time with no one to remind me." She smiled at the witch as she tucked a loose strand of wavy blond hair behind her ear and held out her hand to shake. "I'm Lavender Brown, editor and creator of Miss Witch magazine. You're Rose Zeller, right?"

Rose smiled shyly, managing to get the folder under her left arm so she could take her right hand and shake it with careful firmness. "Yes, I'm Rose Zeller. And thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me. This is terribly nice of you. It's very nice to meet you, Miss Brown."

Lavender noted the firm handshake with a smile as she said, "It's nice to meet you too, Miss Zeller. May I call you Rose? We tend to be a bit more informal around here, it just makes things lighter." She paused, tilting her head slightly as she eyed Rose, "You have very lovely hair. Do you do something special with it?"

"Rose is fine." She pinked faintly. "And no, mostly I just try to convince it not to get too out of hand and frizzy." She reached up to touch the hair in question, wondering just what it was doing today. "But thank you."

"It looks good." Lavender nodded, and then her gaze flicked back to the hallway as she said, "Would you like some coffee? I was just about to grab a cup when I saw you. I swear I live on this stuff sometimes." She laughed.

"Oh, I'm a tea drinker, but I'd be happy to get you a cup of coffee if you'll tell me where it is and how you'd like it prepared," Rose offered, looking down the hallway as well. "Then you'll be all set while we talk. Don't you find it bitter? Oh, my CV." She couldn't put together a cup of coffee with the folder tucked under her arm, so she held it out to Lavender.

"You wouldn't mind?" Lavender asked with a bit of relief. She could never get that darn coffee maker to cooperate with her. Personally, she sometimes thought it had a bit of a vendetta against her. That, or a ghost holed up inside. "I usually take it with cream and two sugars," She said as she took the folder from Rose, "That is, if you're sure you don't mind? I'll just sit down and read your CV and my office. It's the one with the lavender coloured door." She grinned, and added with a laugh, "I wanted to make sure people knew it was my office."

"Oh, I wouldn't mind at all," Rose said cheerily as she handed over the folder.

For a moment her nose wrinkled, then her eyes widened and she grinned. "Oh, we're both flowers. And colours." As if that weren't perfectly obvious, and she pinked as soon as the words were out. "I'm sure you've heard every comment possible on your name, I'm sorry. Let me go get that coffee. Is there a mug or cup you prefer?"

"No, no!" Lavender exclaimed with a laugh, "I didn't even think of it that way." She grinned. "It's a funny coincidence!" She glanced down the hall towards the kitchen and said, "There's a bright pink one in there that I usually use. And thank you very much."

With a smile, she turned and headed back into her office. The walls were painted a pale lavender to match the door, and there were several white shelves and cabinets arranged neatly around, most filled with books, or copies of the magazine. In the center of the room, slightly to the back, was a white desk behind which sat a dark purple arm chair that Lavender sat in. In front of the desk, on top of a round white shag rug, were two smaller matching chairs for interviews and meetings. The walls of the room held several large white frames in which were blow-up images of several of Lavender's favourite covers from the magazine. In the corner of the room, next to several book shelves and file cabinets sat a little white playpen. It was essentially two plastic walls that made use of the corner to form a box. In the middle of the pen, surrounded by several toys, a plush pink cushion and a fancy dish with one bowl for food and one for water, sat Caramel, Lavender's maltipoo puppy.

Lavender settled into her seat, setting the folder in front of her and opening it to scan through Rose's CV as she waited for the girl to enter.

Rose made her way to the kitchen and quickly set up to brew coffee for Lavender, and a little hunting around found a mug that was tucked way in the back unused, and some tea for herself. Once both were set, she carried them very very carefully down the hall to Lavender's office.

She paused on the threshold, unable to knock, but cleared her throat to let Lavender know she was there. "Here you go." She smiled as she set the pink mug in front of Lavender. "Your dog is adorable."

Please don't bark. She smiled at the puppy, then said softly, "I smell like cat. Cutter thinks he ought to shed all over me, and I'm brill at spells to take care of it, but I don't always get all of it, so sometimes dogs love me and sometimes they just never quite get over the cat bit." And of course, she just smelled like cat anyway, she suspected.

Lavender had almost finished reading through Rose's CV when the witch came into her office, carrying two mugs. Lavender took the offered mug with a smile, and sipped gratefully at the coffee. "Mmm, perfect."

Setting the coffee mug down on her desk, she turned towards her puppy and smiled. "That's Caramel. And she's alright with cats. There's a woman in my building that has a tabby, and Caramel usually just sniffs at her and then rolls over to show her belly." She glanced up at Rose and added with a laugh, "I think she knows she's smaller than the cat and figures she'd better play nice."

Still smiling, Lavender nodded towards the two chairs in front of the desk and said, "Please, have a seat."

Rose beamed at the assessment that the coffee was just right, relaxing a bit as she took her seat. Hands folded on her lap, she sat forward, legs crossed at the ankles, back straight. "Do you have any questions about my CV? I know it isn't a terrible lot of experience. I worked in the shop straight out of Hogwarts, then Healer Bradley hired me only a couple of months ago, but he had to leave. And so, here I am."

After taking another sip of coffee, Lavender gave the CV one last look over, and then flipped it close. "It's a perfectly acceptable amount of experience," Lavender said with a smile. "Why don't I explain the duties of the job to you, and you let me know what you think?"

She paused to take another sip of coffee and then continued, "Your desk would be the one right near the entrance, which of course means you'd be responsible for greeting anyone who comes in, and directing them to the right office. You'd also be responsible for sorting all incoming mail, which isn't as hard as you might think. The subscription cards are all pink, so they're easy to sort out, and they all get bundled up and sent to, well, the subscription office. Mail addressed to specific people goes to them, obviously, which only leaves you the mail addressed to the magazine. Usually that's responses to articles and the like."

She stopped again, to take a breath and another sip of her coffee, before continuing, "Other than minor office work, your final main task would be to manage the appointments. Keep track of who is coming in for interviews when, and let people know when they're here, basically." Lavender smiled. "Think you could handle all that? There'd be people to help you out, of course, we have a girl who does light office work and runs errands."

Rose nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, yes. I do love speaking with people, so it would be lovely to meet them as they come in. And I'm very good with filing and keeping appointments. I'm terribly organized. It actually sounds rather like fun. Do I get to read the mail addressed to the magazine? What would I do with it?"

"Organized is good," Lavender said enthusiastically, "I try my best, but sometimes I'm horrid with organization."

She took another sip of her coffee, relishing the caffeine buzz that was beginning to fill her. "You'd have to read through it, and figure out where it goes. I'd get someone to help you with that, at first, but it isn't too hard. The letters asking for advice or suggestions go to the advice columnist, if they aren't already addressed to her. The letters with compliments and remarks about the columns go to their writers, if you need help finding out who they are, just ask, but eventually you'll learn it. The ones with complaints, or questions and the like, those come to me."

"I'm only organized at work. At home Cutter disorganizes me too quickly for me to do anything about. It's awful, really, but I try to keep up." She shouldn't have mentioned that in an interview, should she? Oh dear.

But she just nodded as Lavender went on. "It sounds like there's a lot to do, and you really do need someone sitting there so when people come in they aren't lost. Do you..." well this was terribly forward, but she really needed to be able to pay the rent on her flat, "do you want me to start? I mean, do you think I'll be good enough for you? I'm out of work, so I can begin any time if you'd like."

She sounded desperate, she was sure, but oh, she really did need the job. And it did sound like a terrible lot of fun.

Lavender was silent for a moment, as if deciding something. But in reality, she already knew what she was going to say. Finally, a warm smile spread across her face as she said, "I'd love to hire you. Rose." She slid the CV back across the desk to her new employee and said with a small laugh, "And if you're going to start right away, I think we'd better give you a tour and get you acquainted with the building and the staff, right?"

"Brilliant." Rose couldn't help herself, clapping lightly with a bright smile. "I'd love a tour, oh just let me finish this," she gulped her tea quickly, then stood, still cheerily smiling. "How many people work here? How much of the building is yours?"

Lavender finished off her coffee and rose to her feet as Rose did. "The whole building is ours, actually." She led Rose out into the hallway and pointed left and right, "The offices are all down here." She pointed to the right, and the staircase at the far end of the hallway and said, "And the rooms where we do the layout and print the magazine are upstairs."

She started to lead Rose down the hallway, pointed to doors that were labeled with the names of writers or departments, some of which were opened to reveal people working diligently at their desks. "There are about 15 employees at the moment, including writers, photographers, and the layout and printing people."

Rose looked at everything, trying to memorize the names on the offices, who was where, and at the same time being utterly sure she was going to get lost at first. "Does everybody work here, or do some go out to do things elsewhere? Do you have a photography studio? Will I need to make portkey arrangements for travel?"

"Mostly, they all work here. The writers and photographers often go out for interviews or to cover events, but they come back eventually." They reached the stairs, but Lavender paused to point back down to the other end of the hallway, and the break room where Rose had made coffee earlier. "Did you see the fireplace in the breakroom? Most of the employees floo in and out of work, but there is also a small alley in the back where you can apparate if need be."

She turned back to the stairs and began to climb. "The photography studio is up here, along with a room where they do the layout, and the printing room. Some of the magazines get sent out to shops and stores, others get addressed and sent to the Post Office, where they're delivered to those who have subscriptions." They reached the top of the stairs and another long hallway with numerous doors. Pointing to the nearest one, Lavender explained, "This is the bathroom. There's another one off of the break room." She smiled. "Always good to know where those are, right?"

"I don't have a fireplace in my flat," Rose admitted. "It's in Muggle London, but it's quite soundproofed so no one notices when I pop in and out of it, so I'll likely apparate."

She moved quickly to keep up on the way up the stairs. Blushing faintly she agreed, "Oh yes, always best to know where those are before I have to go running in desperation. What should I do if I need to leave the reception desk for a time?"

"Apparating is fine," Lavender remarked with a soft smile.

Lavender moved slightly down the hallway, stopping when she reached the first open door. "If you need to leave the desk, let Alice know. She's the girl that does light office work and errands, and she can cover your desk during breaks." She gestured to the open door into a room that held several large table, around which several witches and wizards were clustered, rearranging larger scaled versions of the magazine layout on the table. "This is the layout room," Lavender explained, "That's Jessica in the green robes and Kelli next to her with the blond hair, they're both in charge of designing the layouts. Devon there, the bloke with the long black hair, he's a photographer, they're working on the layout for his photoshoot right now. And that man with the gorgeous blond hair and perfect swagger-" She paused to grin and wave her fingers at the wizard, who made a 'kiss kiss' motion back at her, "-that's Nathan, he finalizes all decisions on the layout and then makes the first regular sized sample."

Oh, my goodness the people here were so very terribly pretty. She flushed brightly, smiling and trying not to trip over her own feet in a fit of shy nerves. Was she supposed to wave or just smile at them? She decided on just smiling and nodding and exceedingly shy "Hello."

A shy glance at Lavender. "Everyone seems very friendly here."

"We're a very warm and friendly place to work," Lavender explained with a smile. "Jessica, who does the layout? Her boyfriend works at a restaurant and he brings us food to try all the time. And Devon? His boyfriend is the bartender at this amazing club, so he gets us in whenever he wants." She turned to smiled down at Rose. "You'll fit right in, don't worry."

She continued on down the hall to the printing room, where a large machine (now silent) would churn out copies of the magazine with the correct spell from the wizard who ran (or tried to run) the temperamental machine. With a laugh, Lavender confided, "It's best to stay away from this room when we're printing. Bessie- that's what Dirk, the printer, calls the machine- she has a mind of her own, and you're liable to have magazine whizzing through the air at you if you're not careful." She shrugged, but didn't seem ashamed to admit, "We didn't have the money needed to buy a new machine when I started up the magazine, so we bought Bessie used."

Her eyes widened. "I don't think I ought to go in there; I'd just cause a horrid mess. I get along fine with coffee machines, but that one makes me a bit nervous."

She took in a deep breath, trying to remember everything Lavender had told her about everyone. "Devon has a boyfriend? I'm not... I've only been to a club once and it involved a fist fight, some lovely dancing, and unexpected drunkeness. I'm not sure I ought to do that with people I work with."

"You're not the only one, hun." Lavender smiled. "I made the mistake of going in there once when Dirk was printing the magazines, and almost got whacked in the head."

She smiled and nodded. "Yeah, Devon has a gorgeous boyfriend. And great taste in clothes, by the way, so if you ever need advice on how something looks, don't hesitate to ask him just because he's a man." She tilted her head, slightly amused by Rose's story. "Only once? You should try it more often, it's not always fights and drunkeness."

"I'll try it again sometime, I'm sure. I just never had the opportunity before then; the other girls at the shop I worked at liked to go to the pub, so I'd go along there, but I'm not much of a drinker. But dancing was most certainly fun, so I'd like to do that again." Rose beamed, not sure if she really would but it was fun and she couldn't deny that.

"Well then, you're definitely coming with us the next time we go clubbing after work, all right?" Lavender grinned and then led Rose down the rest of the hallway, showing her the photography room, the development room, and the studio where they did photoshoots if need be. Along the way, she introduced Rose to whatever staff they ran into. Finally, at the end of the hall, Lavender said, "Well, I think that's about it."
