I'm two days early, but little known fact for anyone out there who's curious about criminal justice or the system we have in place. On June 13th, 1966 (that's 47 years ago now), the Supreme Court made a huge decision in a case - Miranda vs Arizona. This decision established that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation, which is now part of standard police procedure.

I really have TV to thank for helping make sure everyone knows the Miranda Rights. There's probably not a show in existence that hasn't used them at least once. There's a lot of details to the case, but I won't go over them here unless someone's interested. Say them with me, folks:

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as I've explained them to you?

New York summers are always so hazy; the air's thick with water and pollution and the concrete makes for a pizza stone under your feet. I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it, but it gets a little same-samey after a while. I've already pulled a vacation with Sara earlier in the summer so stuck I am until the weather decides to back off.

The ennui with my current employment doesn't help. Art restoration in the wake of an alien attack sounds Very Important, but I've been on the same tapestry for three weeks now - the same panel of the same tapestry, point of fact, and while unicorns are lovely creatures, I'm going to hang myself with my needle if this doesn't start to progress any faster. Where are the simple crimes of yesteryear? I realize we've got more superheroes in Potts Tower than the Forces of Good know what to do with, but c'mon. Those with a philosophical bent can argue over whether good guys are even necessary when in such abundance. I'm bored. Do you know what happens when I'm bored? Peter worries more, first of all, and then a lot of circumstantial evidence piles up and I'm wearing orange again.

Thank you for being a good friend, Neal.

I'd like to take a moment, as many others are, to thank all of you here that have taken a large part of your lives and devoted it to serving your country. And honestly, any country, since some people here are from entire other worlds, which I'll never get used to saying. Giving of yourself to help protect and defend others is a noble way of life no matter where you're from. So thank you.

If Sam's isn't overrun with others making the same offer, I'd like to buy any of you a round that are free and able to drop by.

The MoMA uses RBAC for the delivery parking level (for those of you with an allergy to acronyms: Museum of Modern Art and Role-Based Access Control).

RBAC. In this day and age. And a closed-circuit feed.

The front of the museum's decked out, of course, with all that's new and shiny. But the back? Where the exhibits are shipped out? You might as well say "pretty please" and you're in.

Peter, you'd better be glad that the MoMA wasn't in my radius at the start of our parternship.

Before you ask, I'm fine. Another day, another dropping shoe.

So these vampires. Their skin isn't actually worth anything, right? All this talk about diamonds is strictly rooted in simile.

You know, you'd be perfect for the Business Manager position. Helping kids, fundraising. It sounds right up your alley.

Neal. Please, please tell me that you were joking about Dorian Gray's portrait. I was sick, so I wasn't fully up to answering that question, and it's been plaguing me since. Tell me the idea has worn off since you were on vacation. There's a difference between stealing something from--

I can't believe I'm at a point where I'm justifying theft. Never mind. I'm going back to work.

Today is Administrative Professionals' Day, as some of you may know, and there's a good number of people working in this position at both the FBI and, as I understand it, at SHIELD. I really want to work at SHI These are people who, day to day, perform a lot of grueling and thankless tasks and without which everything in business would grind to a halt. I am thankful for each of you every day, but I'd like to take a moment to tell you all how much your efforts mean to me. So, thank you.

Sara and I are currently in Ravello, and we absolutely don't want to come back. I'm no stranger to dodging customs, but unfortunately, I think we're going to do the legal thing and come back to New York before our tourist Visas expire.

Here are some photographs of our trip: under a cut )

Nothing crossing the desks here at the office that seem related to your missing friend. Any news on your end? You know, before you get TOO comfortable in Italy while some of us stay here.

[El]
Two people in the office today sick and I've been feeling a tickle in my throat. Not a good sign. I think I'm going to drown myself in orange juice this weekend and hope for the best.

I think Loverboy said it best, way back in the early 80s. We're "working for the weekend." Some time off is just the thing I need right now.

FILTERED TO PETER & ELIZABETH BURKE AND NEAL CAFFREY:
Peter, try to keep yourself contained, but Neal and I are taking a vacation to Ravello, Italy this coming weekend.

I have no plants to water or fish to feed, this is more of an informational post. Try not to get into too much trouble while we're gone.

As you may have noted from the alert, Diana apparently returned through the device that brought us here. At least I hope that's what happened and they aren't secretly selecting some of us to sacrifice to an Elder God and----- okay, all these comic book heroes are making me think I already miss having her around and it's still not the same without Jones. The White Collar agents here just aren't as enthusiastic about their work.

This feels a lot like my 10 year old self writing fan mail to the address at the back of a comic book, but here goes: Dear Cap, this is a horrible idea and I'm not going to bother you

My hat's off to whomever pranked the elevators this morning. Well executed, I'm just glad I wasn't already carrying a coffee.

[info]impsychicnow

A lack of coffee causes me to walk right into plexiglass covering the elevator door, and then stare at it confused trying to figure out who put the spell on the elevator for at least a minute.

Monday mornings, not my friend.

Neal. Here's your first gift. I'm not going to tell you about a few of the other things I accidentally found on Google, and I see why Sara warned me about fan fiction.

Second gift, which probably isn't nearly as laughable, I thought maybe you and Sara might want to have dinner with El and I. You pick the place, I pick up the tab. I should qualify that. I'll pick up the tab if I can afford it. Unless you and Sara would rather have some private time, then we can postpone until tomorrow or this weekend.

Happy birthday, buddy.

I can't say that I completely disagree with the protesters' plight. A skilled workforce arriving from out of nowhere and you've got more competition for an already tight workplace - I haven't run the numbers, though, how many of us have actually taken jobs outside of the Tower, SHIELD, or Stark Industries? It doesn't seem as if it would be an alarming amount.

Maybe I'm over-thinking it. I'm probably over-thinking it.

This is just embarrassing. Not only will it not hold up to the mildest of scrutiny, but you've officially attracted insects. I guess if you're going for a certain artistic "look", then all bets are off, but otherwise... sloppy and sad.

Put me with the others suffering from DST. Maybe I'm just cranky.

I think I've found the best coffee shop in all of this version of Manhattan. Ninth Street Espresso, if you're interested. Small menu, smaller venue, and made the traditional way. Assolutamente perfetto!

Went into work yesterday (yes, on a Sunday; I'll wait for the shock to die down).

Are we good? All right: I went into work yesterday and it was a skeleton crew. Well, Ryan, this kid who sits near me and works with alkaline, mostly - he's into paper restoration - he's always brown-bagged it. But yesterday he orders in from Felicito's for him and me. Told me about a new bike he'd purchased and was restoring. Was wearing a new coat. All the flashiest signs of Fast Money and Too Stupid to know how to keep it quiet.

Anyway. I poked, I prodded, I showed him a trick with the Mylar enclosure to cut down on his works' acclimation time. Seems there's some street-job recruiting those with a chemistry background for a little after-hours work. It's gotta be big-time with the green he's flashing, but he wouldn't introduce me to anyone. I think he likes lining his own pen.

I think I'm going to show off a dusty skill-set or two and see if I get any bites.

How do you feel about helping me out with a project? I'll get you and Peter a reservation into Brooklyn Fare's Chef Table which is, by the by, impossible for lesser mortals.

New York - one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Artists throughout history have tried to capture her spirit.

As a boy, I read comic books. Thus, I have a long-standing question that I find I am now able to (perhaps) find an answer to:

What on earth were you all keeping in all those pouches?

They were strapped to every thigh, wrapped around every waist...one little pouch after another, just rows upon rows of them. So please, tell me what was in there. Then maybe I can stop imagining you all carrying 15 pagers a piece on your thigh, or stowing bullets like individually wrapped snack cakes.

Brussels! I've got some options for us. Some are more promising than others.

- Manon Peeters: owns a B&B in the center of the city. Big fan of the show. Shockingly normal. I've looked up pictures of the B&B and it looks decent enough.

- Camille Janssens: has a townhouse downtown that looks great. Marble counters, her father's in the wine business, very posh. Has a stipulation that I'm not allowed to wear a shirt while on her property, so I vote no.

- Léa Wouters: will be out of town the next week to visit her boyfriend in Germany. Sounds ideal, right? She made the point of mentioning she has cameras in every room in her house. I don't know if that's her being careful about thieving or if she just likes to watch.

For the record, I'm still fine with smiling our way into a Four Star and seeing where it gets us.

Filtered to Residents of Floors 20 & 21.

Hello, floors 20&21!

For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Joan Watson, and I am your new housing assistant.

I'll tell you a little bit about myself. I am from this time and this city in a world that is very much like this one. I am currently an investigator, working with Sherlock Holmes and the NYPD. Prior to coming here, I had worked as a sober companion for the last several years, and I would be happy to assist anyone who is currently struggling with addiction in any way that I can. (I also have medical training, and will be able to assist in case of emergencies, but please don't hesitate to call 911.)

As for what my position entails, in addition to helping out with any housing issues you may have, I'm also here to help you adapt to your new surroundings in any way that I can. I'd be happy to help you find a job, navigate the public transportation system, use modern technology and currency, and so on. If there's ever anything you need help with, please don't hesitate to ask. My number and my hours of availability will be posted on the door of room 2108. I look forward to getting to know all of you better.

(( Pretend that there is a valid logistical reason why this wasn't posted sooner. Joan would have posted it in a timely fashion, but I was out of town when it happened, and only remembered yesterday. Which happened because I was sick at home with the stomach flu, and kept wishing Steve Rogers was there to carry me from place to place so I wouldn't have to stand up. ))
