who: Kurt Wagner & Quentin Coldwater when: The day of Anka Irene’s birthday party where: Dino Island What: Meeting dinosaurs and hanging out warnings: Nah status: COMPLETE.
Quentin had been excited about Dino Island. He’d been concerned about Rogue, but definitely excited about the dinosaurs. Of all the things Fillory had, it didn’t have dinosaurs, so he was unsurprisingly very excited. He didn’t really want to be eaten, but that was the point of having people who could stop that from happening and really, he was pretty sure he could manage with magic if pressed. That’s what portals were for.
Glancing over at Kurt, Quentin offered him a small smile. He’d been glad when Kurt asked to come with him on his adventure. He’d have been fine with other people coming, but he enjoyed spending time with Kurt. It was half the point of going to the dances. Then again that first time he asked him to dance was more to do with some sort of fanboy reaction than anything else. And then he just kept asking. He didn’t think about it that much at first because he’d been distracted by various other things, but with the memory upgrade and then everything with Napoleon, he sort of noticed a little more. At first, teasing Rogue had been part of the appeal, but the flirting was easier than it tended to be at times. He was much better at books and magical quests than anything else.
This wasn’t the first time they’d been around each other without dancing being part of it, but it was now about equal with it. “I’m pretty sure this is the first baby party I’ve been to since I was a baby myself.”
“Hey, what do you know?” Kurt exclaimed in a playfully cheerful manner. “It’s my first baby party on an island with dinosaurs! So we’re even.” He flashed a toothsome grin at Quentin, and then quickly, before he could get mental about it, gave the other man a wink.
The conversation Kurt had with Napoleon had been a few days ago, and Kurt had enough time to think things over, and assimilate what they’d talked about. When he saw Quentin at the party, he looked over at Napoleon, then decided to muster up the courage to ask if the magician was interested in going out together. Yes, they danced together at balls, and got comfortable with one another when they’d gone clubbing in NYC, but this would be different. What Kurt had in mind was a proper date. Kurt’s first date with another man.
Treat it like how you would treat approaching a woman you would be interested in - that is to say with respect - and you'll be fine. That was the advice Napoleon had given. So before leaving the party to go outside and explore with Quentin, Kurt gave himself a mental pep talk to calm his mind and relax so he could be his usual, amazing self. They stepped outside together, and the first thing Kurt did was climb a tree to perch in a crouching position on a low hanging branch, his tail swinging wildly to and fro as it does when he got excited...or nervous. “Who needs Jurassic Park when we have Dinosaur Island! Where do you want to head out to, first?” There’s a field up ahead where the herbivores graze - that might be a safer bet.”
There was a laugh at that. “Well, dinosaurs and baby parties probably don’t tend to go hand in hand.” He took notice of the wink, but didn’t really think much of it considering Kurt tended toward mild flirtation most of the time.
Quentin couldn’t really say much about strange or unusual behavior because he was the type to crouch on chairs instead of sit in them. Unless he was really tired. More than your average tired. So he just looked up at Kurt for a moment before looking out where he was. “First Harry Potter World, now Jurassic Park. This place doesn’t have Ian Malcolm lounging with his shirt half open, but that’s probably okay.”
He considered the question for a moment. “Whatever’s closest probably works. Maybe not right away to the dinosaurs that will try to eat us. That can always come later and I’ll do my best not to actually get eaten.”
At the mention of Jeff Goldblum’s character, Kurt let out a loud burst of laughter. “Ha! Don’t speak so soon, mein Freund. The Portal makes anything happen. Who knows? Doctor Malcolm could be with the next batch of new arrivals, and if he is, I’m blaming you.”
Nodding his head once Kurt climbed higher in the tree with as much ease as walking on the ground. High above, he had a much better view of the surrounding landscape, and once he spotted them, he pointed in that direction and called down to Quentin, “There’s a herd of stegosaurus… or is it stegosaurai?... about a quarter of a mile that way. I can teleport us there, if you’d like?”
“No one would complain if Dr. Malcolm showed up. And if they did, they’d just be annoyed about how excited they were about it.” Quentin grinned at that. “So blame away.” He wouldn’t have been disappointed, but that was more out of a nerd-type sort of interest than anything else. So far he was already surrounded by people he’d never thought were real and was excited to find that they were and they they were here.
Quentin watched as Kurt climbed up the tree, curious about it a little. “I don’t know. I think we’d need Dr. Grant for that. Or someone who isn’t me. But we should definitely go there, so yes. We should definitely go check out to … stegosaurus...es? Whatever. We should go. And yes, you can teleport us there.”
“I wonder what Dr. Malcolm say about our dinosaur island?” Kurt said while on his way climbing down the tree, going face down with the dexterity of a squirrel. He jumped off the last branch and landed perfectly on his feet beside Quentin, grinning. “Dr Grant! Oh, I love Sam Neill. Have you seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople? Great movie.”
He stood close to Quentin and wrapped his arm around his waist. “Since you’ve never teleported with me before, I should warn you that you may experience a bit of nausea or dizziness. It’s perfectly normal, and usually passes quickly. If you were wearing a hat, I would tell you to hold on to it. Ready?”
Once he got the word that Quentin was ready... BAMF... they were in an open, grassy field, where the sun shone brightly upon twenty or so stegosauruses, who turned their collective heads curiously in their direction, but luckily it was not enough to startle them - the went back to their grazing. “You okay?” Kurt asked, making sure Q was okay.
“Probably about the same as he felt about the last one.” But Quentin and them had magic. It might work out better than Jurassic Park, but who could say? And before he knew it, Kurt was back next to him. “I haven’t seen it, no. But if you want to, maybe we can sometime.” Because why not? It was bound to be interesting.
“I can handle it. Can’t be worse than anything else we’ve done.” He wasn’t sure whether or not he needed to put his arm around Kurt’s waist or not, but if he was going to be dizzy, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to have something - someone - to hold onto, so he followed suit.
Teleporting was a lot more of a thing than walking through a portal. He definitely felt a little dizzy and a little nauseous, but he closed his eyes and tried to focus on Kurt’s arm around his waist and a few other sensations until it passed. “Doing good. I have lived through worse.” He allowed a moment before he said, “That was totally awesome, though. And dinosaurs!” His expression brightened considerably and he let go, moving forward a bit. He wanted to see if he’d get to pet the dinosaurs. It happened in the movies. Why not now? “Best day ever.”
Kurt kept a keen eye on Quentin as he walked away, making sure he was alright. He noted the way the magician smiled, and how his eyes lit with joy, before turning his attention toward the dinosaurs. “They’re pretty docile, I think,” he said with some caution - if for some reason the stegosauruses were spooked, Kurt prepared himself to suddenly teleport themselves to a safe distance. “Be careful,” he warned. “Take it slow.”
Quentin paused at the sound of Kurt’s voice. He turned to look at him for a moment. “I can admire them from afar if you think it’s a better idea. I mean, I guess they aren’t sick or a Brachiosaurus.” He studied them for a moment. The tails would hurt if they got spooked. Everything would hurt if they got spooked. Yes, he could do magic and protect himself, but maybe he shouldn’t just assume that would protect him from everything like he tended to. He also hadn’t figured out exactly whether or not his power had been augmented by the fact he was back on his medication. He was afraid to test his magic and find it wasn’t as strong, so he’d just mostly done small things and left himself in the dark.
Honestly, Kurt didn’t know his dinosaur types well enough to know what a brachiosaurus was, so Quentin’s comparison sort of fell flat, but in context Kurt assumed that it must be a more dangerous type. “I think it’ll be alright,” he said, noticing how the stegosaurus that was closest didn’t seem phased by the presence of humans, and simply stood there, ruminating on the grass in its mouth. “Go on,” he encouraged, while staying exactly where he was; the smell of brimstone that accompanied his teleportation would be stronger on him, and he wasn’t sure whether or not that would disturb the dinosaurs, so he kept a discreet distance.
Quentin really only knew what they were because he had a habit of knowing certain things. Also mostly because he’d watched Jurassic Park recently. It had come on the TV and he was about to go to a dinosaur island. Why wouldn’t he watch it? Carefully, slowly, he made he way toward the stegosaurus once Kurt had given him the go ahead. He hadn’t realized he was holding his breath until the moment that he reached out a hand to touch it. It was then that the dinosaur seemed aware of someone actually close by (outside of when they first showed up). It turned to look at him and he stood as still as he could until it went back to chewing grass.
He moved a little closer, moving his hand over the skin. He was going to tell Julia all about this. He took this moment to take a quick selfie (which was actually not all that quick since he didn’t was to spook the stegosaurus) so she could see that he’d actually touched a dinosaur. Later he’d text her the picture with a BE JEALOUS message. Gloating was necessary in this situation. “This is so cool,” he said, turning to look at Kurt again. His voice was perhaps quieter than it needed to be, but the excitement was definitely evident.
From his place, Kurt watched Quentin with a smile. The other man was having so much fun, let him enjoy himself. Although the dinosaurs were really cool, he’d been to the Savage Lands in his world, and so they didn’t have quite the same novelty. When he saw Quentin reach for his mobile to take a selfie, Kurt’s smile grew and he did the same, also taking a photo, which he’d forward to Quentin later on.
“Do you want to see others?” he asked, wanting Quentin to have the full experience.
It was remarkably easy to make Quentin’s day. At least most of the time. There were the darker times when even getting him to acknowledge the possibility of happiness was complicated, but it had been a while since he’d gotten that bad. Well, perhaps not all that long. It was most of the reason why he’d ended up drunk after losing his magic. But that was also the final shove to be better. It was the kick in the ass he’d needed to get a doctor and get back on the medication. Today was a good day. He was concerned for Rogue, but he was also distracted by how brilliant all the dinosaurs were.
The others. There was no real answer to that question that didn’t involve him being entirely delighted. He tried to resist the urge to jump up and down in excitement over it. Really, he was trying to play it cool because he was sure being over enthusiastic might come off a bit more ridiculous than he wanted. Still, he couldn’t help the smile that formed. “Yeah. Definitely. Are all of the dinosaurs here? Because that could definitely be interesting.”
“I’m not sure,” Kurt spoke with hesitation borne from uncertainty, but then his smile reflected Quentin’s own. “But we can find out together?”
