It wasn't that she disliked battle, but more that she preferred to do hers with words. But there were sometimes when diplomacy didn't have any effect, which she knew all too well. Bokoblins didn't listen to words, as much as she wished they would. They were creatures that seemed, for the most part, content with serving in their forces, obeying the orders given. Not too clever, on the whole, but resilient. The perfect sort of infantry. Easy to maintain, easy to guide, and not a true hardship when one was lost.
It was mostly the sort of thing running around in her head, generally as a distraction. Even with it defeated she still felt tense. Bokoblin's hardly went anywhere without their guidance and orders, and to her knowledge there was only one who regularly added them to his armies. Even now, a world and time away the thought of Ganondorf made her shiver. She tried to tell herself that he was dead and vanquished, but it helped little in the face of knowing that in this place neither time, nor place, nor death held the final say. The portal defied times, so it was perfectly possible it could spit out a Ganondorf that hadn't been vanquished.
And considering last time he'd used Zant, she wouldn't put it past Ganondorf to use the several creatures she'd heard about to his advantage. This world wasn't Hyrule, but it would matter little. And she knew that with all the combined people there would be no way that Ganondorf could move unrestricted, but she still feared. Even now, when things were calm again.
She sat on the edge of her bed, mind racing until she felt a gentle nudge. Impa, eyes gentle, pushed at her hand and she smiled at her, leaning down to kiss her nose before gently petting the creature. It was a soothing action, only paused when she heard her door.
Fighting these Bokoblins were in a way much easier than dealing those pirates that had tried to take their cruise ship. Link told him that if you disarmed the Bokoblins, they could be dispatched with quickly, so as a team Percy cast Expelliarmus and Accio spells one right after the other, which gave Link a chance to move in and dispatch of their attackers with his sword. It was exhilarating, Percy had to admit to himself, and they made quite a team. In his youth, he liked to read books on Arthurian legends, getting inspiration from the Knights of the Round Table. While helping fight these creatures from Zelda’s world, Percy finally felt as though he was living that dream.
But he couldn’t help but notice that Zelda was terribly disturbed by the experience. He knocked on the door to her room before opening it to a crack so he could peek inside. “Zelda? May I come in?” With his shoulder, he opened the door the rest of the way so he could enter properly, holding two cups of steaming hot tea. “I thought this might help,” he said, setting the tea on the bedstand nearby, then sat on the edge of the mattress beside Zelda. He greeted the pokemon with a weak smile and a small nod, but his attention was focused more on how Zelda was doing. “How are you feeling?”
She smiled when Percy entered. She was normally fairly good about hiding things, but reminders of the entire mess was always a weakness. Which was odd, considering she hadn’t actually done anything. It had all been Link. “You do not have to ask. You are always welcome.” she was glad for the tea. Maybe it would help. And she could not put into words how grateful she was for all this.
“I do not know if there is a word for how I am feeling. Nervous?” She shook her head, knowing it didn’t quite fit. Maybe explaining would help. “Bokoblins aren’t terribly bright creatures, but they’re often used in infantry units. They follow orders, and aren’t bright enough to realize to question them.” She paused for a while, smoothing out Impa’s fur. “Ganondorf uses them. They’re enough to fill ranks with, and aren’t a terrible loss when they fall. I keep thinking to see him. I saw him defeated but,” again she sighed and she looked up at Percy, “this portal does not care about time. I know that Ganondorf could not hide, not from all the people gathered here. I know this, and yet I still fear him appearing.” She gave a weak smile, “a bit silly, really.”
“Still, it’s polite to ask,” Percy said, resting one hand upon her shoulder to try and be encouraging. He listened to Zelda as she explained what Bokoblins were and went on to reveal her mind. Sober and empathetic, Percy reacted to the name Ganondorf with a scowl - she’d told him all about this enemy before. “Considering the disturbances he caused, it’s no wonder you feel that way. I don’t think it’s silly at all. If the portal can bring Bokoblins from your world, and Dementors from mine, then there’s a chance Ganondorf might appear as well, so your fears are well founded.” Percy looked downward. “The same way, Voldemort and his Death Eaters could find themselves in town.”
His frown transformed as he squared his jaw with determination, and his eyes were likewise strong. “If these enemies show up, they won’t be a match for the Displaced. You’re not alone, Zelda. Not by a long shot. We’ll all stand together to defeat whatever the portal decides to spit out, including Garnondorf. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
She did appreciate it and leaned into his touch. “I’m worried what he would do.” She gave honestly. “In my time it was Zant. Through him, he leveraged my people against me. He knows me, knows what I value. If he was here.” She shook her head and looked to Percy. “I dread what he might do to those I care for. You, Allison, Stephen, Link. If he hurt any of you, I could not bear that I think. I worry more for that then what he might wish on the Triforce on.” She knew Link would defy Ganondorf, but she still worried. And neither Allison nor stephen were technically her wards, but she still felt responsible for them.
She smiled to his words, “I know. I cannot tell you how I appreciate that. I’m not worried for the fighting, I will pick up my own bow to fend him off. I just wish there was a way where I did not need to fear him so. To separate him from whatever dark force holds him. Give him choice.” Even after all Gandondorf had done in her lifetime, and in the lifetimes before her, she wanted peace for him. She might fear him, but she still cared. Even for her greatest enemy. “And if this Voldemort ever came, I would stand at your side. I would not let anything happen to you either.”
“You don’t have to worry about us, Zelda,” Percy said, confidently. “Link, Allison, Stephen, or even me.” Fighting side by side with Link against the Bokoblins had infused Percy with confidence. “As for giving him the choice to free Gandondorf? It sounds like he’s already made that choice. It’s like Voldemort. He was so determined to become powerful that he used the darkest of magic to rip apart his soul so he couldn’t be killed. People like that, they don’t understand. They’ll see it as weakness, and laugh in your face.” Percy reached over and gently stroked Zelda’s golden hair. “Compassion like yours would fall on deaf ears. But it shows the nature of your own heart that you want to see him saved.” He then leaned down and kissed her softly upon the lips before saying, “You’re an amazing woman, Zelda. I’m lucky to know you.”
She smiled at the kiss and his words. She was grateful to hear them. “I have to try. I do not know this Voldemort, I do not know if he could be reached. But for Ganondorf’s sake I have to try.” Maybe she’d stop fearing him, or worrying about being kidnapped. “He’s the odd one out. Both me and Link have pieces of the Triforce as well, and neither of us turn to tyranny or domination. We both have the capacity for it. I have an army at my disposal, and Link could gain one easily. Nor is Din, the goddess of power, evil. She just...is. No more or less then Her sisters, who oversee the other two pieces of the Triforce. Ganondorf is not, I think, evil at heart. Conflicted perhaps. Greedy for certain. But evil? Who can say that for certain.”
She shook her head, “I think something evil influences him, but that he could be parted from it. And I have to try. I cannot, of course, here. And he has been slain in my time. But perhaps those who come after me can build upon whatever foundation I lay. To allow Ganondorf peace. Every time it is the same. He comes for Hyrule, and then is promptly defeated by Link. Even the most foolish, the most twisted sort of creature could see the foolishness in that, to keep hitting themselves on this same wall. And I cannot live my life in fear of his return. If Ganondorf comes through that portal I wish to be able to face him, not run away like I fear I will now. So I have to try and look for another way.” She smiled and turned to him, setting her hand on his cheek, “And I always worry. You are a piece of my heart. So are the others. I know you all capable of defending yourself but that helps less than you think.”
Percy admired Zelda for her compassion, and her steadfast desire to help even in the face of dangerous opposition. It seemed nothing would change her mind. Maybe that was being a little naive, Percy thought, but then again, “If anybody is able to find a way to change the heart of somebody like Ganondorf, it’s you Zelda,” Percy proudly said, without any hint of condescension. Honestly, Percy wasn’t sure he could sincerely be the same way, he was a bit more callous and jaded. He was curious about her opinion. “Then what do you think would help?”
“That is the question, isn’t it?” She patted Impa’s head before taking the cup of tea and sipping at it. It allowed her to think. And consult Naryu. “I think it would actually go easier if he was brought here. Take him away from Hyrule.” She gave and winced a bit, setting the cup down. The problem with divine wisdom was that it was sometimes too much. Goddesses did not comprehend a mortal brain and its limitations. She’d have a headache for hours, but in the end it was worth it. And she was long used to it.
“I think he’s like me, a reincarnation. But he’s no more the God that made him then I am Hylia. I think if we could remind him of that, separate him from whatever force influences him then he could be saved. It can’t be easy for him. Goddesses know what it actually must be like, hearing this voice you cannot ignore that drives you to do things until you cannot remember if you’re still yourself or what you’re made to be. Then add to it the fact that the Triforces do have some darkness to them, and power always seeks for more of it.” She shrugged, “I wish him peace Percy. I wish he could have a life like I am having right now. Being able to choose. Being myself, rather than the pedestal they make of me some days. My duty to my people is always going to be my most important thing, but being able to be myself? It is not a gift that I will turn away.” She waved one hand, “but until he is here it is all theory.”
Percy took a deep breath and finally said what was going through his mind the entire time Zelda was speaking. “I wish you peace, Zelda. I know how important this is, and that you want to be prepared in case of an emergency, but…” His voice trailed off as he grimaced. “You don’t need to carry this weight on your shoulders. I know you’re a princess, and it’s natural for you to be like this, but…”
He cut himself off, because while he wished she wouldn’t worry herself with these complex matters, he reminded himself that by asking Zelda to do so, would be asking her to be somebody she was not. And as somebody who felt he was always put down for being different than the rest of his family, this was something Percy wouldn’t want to happen to anybody else, least of all someone he cared for so deeply. He sighed, and smiled at her through his concern., then continued differently, “... but please try not to let it affect you too much, alright? Is there anything I can do for you, here and now?”
She smiled. She understood where he was coming from but she could not put this aside any less than she could separate her blood out of her body. She cared, and her duty was to see to the wellbeing of her people. And whether she, or Ganondorf himself, actually liked it Ganondorf was also part of that. He was a part of the cycle, and if she could help him, she had an obligation to do so. “You’re here. It is more than enough. I know you mean well, and that you care for me. But I have peace. I have more then I would have if I were home. And I have you.” She added with a brighter smile. “You give me peace. And happiness. I didn’t expect either when I came here. Being able to get to know you, find this path between us, well…”she trailed off and shrugged. “It is a gift that is all the better for not being one I’d expected to find. “So you do more than enough. Just by being you.”
Percy’s smile reflected Zelda’s soft and adoring. He gently took the cup of tea from her and carefully set it aside upon the bed stand so that he was able to freely hold her in a tight embrace.
