RATING: PG? Mentions of death.
STATUS: Complete.
Since her arrival, Bonnie had actively managed to avoid going near Damon’s room to see him, for the simple reason that he shared his space with Stefan. Logically Bonnie knew that this Stefan had not killed Enzo. At least not yet. But timelines be damned, Bonnie could not get the image of him killing the man she loved from her mind. It was burned there, and although she had promised Enzo she would live her life, forgiving Stefan was something different. Yes, Enzo had also told her to forgive, but it was not something she could do. Her happily ever after had been stolen from her, and once again she had been left alone. But now here she was, at their cabin after Emmeline had invited her along to go check on him. She couldn’t turn that down, and she couldn’t ask Damon to meet them elsewhere. Bonnie’s reaction to seeing Stefan had been cold. A brief not, lips drawn tight, arms crossed over her stomach. It was all she could manage at the moment. If Stefan knew what her issues were, she didn’t know, and didn’t want to ask. She would be here for Damon, he was her friend, despite everything that had ever happened between them. The prison world had brought them together and she’d never be able to cut him out of her heart at this point. He was too important now. She she would suck up her personal feelings and deal with seeing his brother. Bonnie hadn’t been at their place too long when she excused herself to go use their washroom. As long as she and Stefan managed to avoid being in the same space alone, she was safe. She could deal. Stefan was kind of getting used to the weird receptions at this point. His welcoming committee had been Emmeline greeting him as though she was seeing a ghost. There were a number of people in Tumbleweed who knew him from a time he couldn’t remember, after he’d come and gone a couple of times. And Caroline had been from so far back in their past that while they’d been friends at that time, even she hadn’t seemed all that happy to have him around. If there was one thing normal in Tumbleweed, one relationship that hadn’t felt different, it was the one he had with his brother and even that- Damon had changed. He was still Damon, but he’d grown here. Or maybe it had been in the future Stefan had yet to live. Either way, Stefan couldn’t help but notice and be impressed. He was focused on Damon now, knowing that he was taking the loss of the girls harder than he’d willingly admit. Damon being Damon, the answer was distraction, usually found in a good bottle of bourbon. In this new world, it usually involved any number of the “harem” he seemed to have acquired for himself. Stefan didn’t think that was a bad thing, either. It served as a reminder of what his brother still had. Noticing the cold reception from Bonnie, Stefan had been curious, but had decided this wasn’t the time to ask questions. Instead, he’d tried to give her as much space as was possible in this space. It seemed like the idea plan until he found himself almost literally running into her in the hallway outside the washroom. “Hey...” he offered cautiously. Of course she was going to run into Stefan at some point. He lived here, how could she avoid it? Bonnie Bennett, always stupidly hopeful. Bonnie met his eyes and held them for a second, before looking away at nothing in particular. She saw his faces and wanted to lash out at him, the image of Enzo dying playing over and over in her mind. But he didn’t have those memories. “Hi.” she replied curtly. “Why aren’t you with Damon and his harem?” she was just using Damon’s own words to describe the people in his life here. Not that Stefan needed a reason to be anywhere in his own space, but it was alls he was coming up with right now. He had no doubt noticed she was off with him. Stefan wasn’t stupid. They’d been through their ups and downs many times, and he no doubt knew when Bonne was pissed at him, even if he didn’t know why. He hadn’t said anything, probably because he couldn’t figure out what was off with her. Which only gave her so much time to figure out what she was going to say when he finally asked. Stefan shrugged in reply. He didn’t really have a reason for not being down there aside from maybe the fact that sometimes he craved a little solitude. The cabin on the ship wasn’t nearly as large as the boarding house and finding his own space wasn’t as easy, but he figure that for the most part it was Damon they were all here to see. “What about you?” he asked in an attempt to divert the question away from himself. It was an honest question when the three women had all showed up to check on, well, Damon, he was sure. Bonnie mirrored his shrug, looking around their cabin space. “Bathroom.” she said, motioning over her shoulder. “And the whole thing is still weird. With another Elena and Hayley look-a-likes where I’m using to seeing Elena and Caroline” She didn’t blame Rose and Emme at all, but it required some adjustment. She was pretty use to it being the three of them that was nearly always around the Salvatores and the rest of their group. This was just a little strange to her. She might have been upset, but there was no point in lying about any uneasiness with this new situation she found herself in. At least not to Stefan, or Damon. “It’s good though, that he has them. They seem nice.” They seemed kind, but with some attitude, it was a good combination for dealing with Damon. Just as long as everyone recognized she herself pre-dated the Harem. She loved Damon, he was one of her best friends, but no. “Besides, I don’t know Betty and Veronica. I’m guessing those girls did, so…” she didn’t want to intrude too much if it looked like Damon was okay. Okay for Damon. “That’s fair.” Stefan nodded, understanding perfectly what she meant. He hadn’t known Hayley very well, but Rose’s resemblance to Elena had thrown him. Sometimes it was still strange, especially given how close she and Damon were. Damon had explained it and Stefan knew he wasn’t just using the dhampir as a stand in for the love of his life, but that didn’t make it any less bizarre to see her and know without a doubt that she wasn’t Elena or any of the other Petrova doppelgangers. “I’ve gotten to known Emmeline better than I have Rose, but they both seem to be good for Damon, which counts for a lot with me. I don’t want to think about the kind of spiral he would have gone into when we lost Elena if he didn’t have them.” Wanting Damon to be okay was something they could always agree on. “It’s still weird, though. I guess even for us, the lookalike thing is hard to get used to.” “Yeah.” she said with a nod, shoving her hands into the pocket of her zip up hoodie, “I’m sure they are. I’ll get over it eventually. Fear of insane doppelgangers, hard to shake.” It didn’t help that she missed her two best friends. She was glad Damon was here, and she’d been away from Caroline and Elena before, but this seemed so much more definite. Her discomfort was obvious, Bonnie was never great at hiding that. She was tense, her eyes landing pretty much anywhere but Stefan. She couldn’t figure out how to handle her anger when the Stefan she had in front of her was before everything had happened. Back when she looked at him and saw a friend. She couldn’t do what Enzo had wanted her too so easily. “Right. Sooo...I’m just going to go say goodbye to Damon, then I’ll leave you guys alone.” At this point she still felt like a stranger to this group. Her awkwardness with everyone besides Damon made it feel like she didn’t quite belong here. “You don’t have to do that, you know,” Stefan offered. He could tell she was uncomfortable, even if he didn’t know why that was. He suspected that at least a part of it was the changes in Damon’s life and his closeness to these women who looked so much like people they knew from home. “I know Damon. He’s glad you’re here, even if he doesn’t always show it.” “Yes, I do.” she said sharply, and moved to walk away before he continued about Damon. The subject forced her to calm herself down, taking a deep breath and relaxing her posture. “I’m not worried about Damon, I’m well versed in how he goes about showing things.” You didn’t get trapped with someone for as long as they had without figuring things out about them. Bonnie’s eyes looked toward the door, wishing she knew any magic that would let her teleport to the otherside of it. “It’s you I can’t deal with right now, Stefan.” she finally said. “And I know you probably don’t know why, and it’s not technically your fault yet. People who come from different timelines just makes everything complicated.” “Oh.” It was hard to know what to say to that. Obviously, something else had happened that he didn’t have the memories of and it was something so horrible that Bonnie didn’t want to be stuck in this suite with him. He’d grown used to the notion that he’d lived a life he didn’t remember in Tumbleweed, but this was somehow different. “Why don’t you tell me why?” he suggested. He hadn’t asked Damon about the future, hadn’t been sure he wanted to know, but if there was something pushing one of his brother’s best friends to keep her distance, he thought maybe it was time to hear it. Bonnie shifted her weight back and forth, still looking at the door. The last thing she wanted was the discuss the whole subject again. If someone like Cade ended up in this place, she’d kill him instantly. “I don’t know what the last thing you remember is, but...back home you turned off your humanity again. And you killed Enzo. In front of me.” She was assuming he was from a time that she and Enzo were together for. If not she’d more explaining to do and Bonnie was pretty sure she couldn’t do it. “The best thing in my life was ripped away. Because of you.” she said, voice cold. “Future you. Whatever.” That’s when she made herself look him in the eyes. Bonnie didn’t have any tears left on the subject. She’d made herself sick from crying, and she was still working on the anger. Part of the reason she had chosen to get out of Mystic Falls for a while was to learn to let go. That wasn’t possible here. Stefan didn’t really have any words. What could he say on learning the truth? He wanted to know how it had happened, why it had happened, but he couldn’t exacerbate Bonnie’s pain by asking her to recount the details. “I’m so sorry,” was all he could say and he knew that wasn’t enough. No words could ever be enough, whether it was something he’d lived through yet or not. Glancing at the door, he shook his head. “You should stay, Bonnie. Be here for Damon. If anyone should be leaving, it’s me.” He had said sorry in her time too, and she knew it meant it. He was sorry. He always was. Stefan with his humanity was a good person. But she had lost to much and just wasn’t there yet. “You’re his brother. He needs you more, and this is your place.” She could talk to Damon later, track him down tomorrow. He had people here, and if Bonnie explained her situation, he’d understand. “Tell Damon I’m sorry, and I’ll track him down tomorrow.” it wasn’t like any of them could go very far on this ship anyway. The could go hit up the bar and drink. Though hopefully those two girls he had taken in were headed back home to something decent. |
