Small shops with displays on the sidewalk were a real blessing. Most likely the owners knew they were accepting a certain amount of loss by doing it, but even now she could see it working as the occasional pedestrian ahead of her spotted something tempting and veered off into the open doorways. Unaware that she was the target of even closer scrutiny than she was casting over the locals, X-23 was focused mostly on finding an opportunity to take advantage, swerving around a man as he turned and then stepping away with two smallish apples in her hand. People coming out of stores could be relied on to have their wallets out, shoved half into a pocket or dropped into an open shopping bag, and it was just as easy to grab one, pull out anything in the notes compartment and drop it as though it had simply slipped from its owner's grasp.
She stopped further down outside a cafe, studying the menu in the window for a visible reason to count the money she had in her hand as she bit into one of the apples. It was a lot less than she'd been hoping, and she wasn't entirely sure how far it would get her. How much would a bus out of town cost? It wasn't something she typically needed to know to complete a mission. She was usually provided with transportation, since someone her size alone on long-distance travel like that would stand out and it was easier for her handlers to simply keep a close eye.
What was she supposed to do? She didn't care if she got punished, she just wanted someone to tell her what her mission was.
