The pause in activity gave her a moment to rest and consider what had happened, and how much of this awful situation she could blame on Constans -- if she had been in here alone, the Senior Enchanter surely wouldn't have locked her in for fear of shirking duties, and she wouldn't have run headlong into danger when it made itself known, and she wouldn't have turned this sealed room into a death trap with a fire spell. But he did rush in to protect her, even if she would have never expected him to care enough to save anyone but himself, and reckless as he was, maybe he wasn't an entirely awful person. Perhaps he wasn't the worst role model for Desiderio. Perhaps they could even interact in a social manner after this, without all the pretension and apprehension between them. Or maybe he would just go back to ignoring her, sneering at her behind her back. She didn't like that idea, but part of her felt like that was the most likely scenario.
Beth almost wanted to apologize for thinking so poorly of the other apprentice, confession being one of those things people seemed to do when they were facing impending doom, but she said nothing, instead silently staring at the boy without realizing it until she heard a clicking sound in the locks. The solid doors shuddered and creaked as they were forced apart, inwards, and Beth had to take a few steps back so as to avoid getting hit by one of them. Tendrils of smoke crawled around their legs, seeking the open air of the laboratory. The Senior Enchanter strode in first, while two others, wearing the canary yellow of a fully fledged mage, came sweeping inside behind him, rushing into the depths with their staves in hand. One of Alden's dark hand reached for her and the other for Constans, pulling them forward into the chamber outside.
