Summary: Jaden is musing over the Joining coming up, and spending time in a human village for the first time.
Rating: PG/PG-13
At first, it would have been all-too easy to claim that Jaden was simply overwhelmed. That he, a Dalish elf, was having a hard time adjusting to life in a human town. That much would have been true a few days ago. And wasn't too far from the truth now. However, after the caution had subsided a bit, Jaden's natural curiosity began to show more and more. He found himself wandering through the expanses of the town surrounding the Keep, visiting with the inhabitants. Visiting was actually a generous word for it. Rather, he would watch a group of the humans for a few moments, then wander off when his presence was noticed or once the interest in the activity had worn off.
And there was plenty of activity in the town. The Keep itself was a bustle of activity, as the Wardens prepared for the Joining Ceremony. The Ceremony that would determine if Jaden was fit to join the ranks. And the worst part about it was that he knew there was nothing he could do to prepare. He would pass and join the ranks...or he would pass into another world. As such, he figured he might as well make his remaining time worth while. His day so far had been spent, once again, wandering around the town.
This time, however, he had managed to meet and befriend some of the children. They were fascinated with him, since he was an elf, and they knew he'd come in with the Warden-Commander. At first, all they'd done was follow him around, darting into a hiding place to giggle when he'd turned towards them. Eventually though, one of them had gotten braved and stepped forward to offer him a piece of fruit. Once he'd accepted it, it seemed he was fair game. He'd answered questions about himself, his people. One of the children had spotted the daggers on his belt and proclaimed that he was going to be a great warrior. Jaden had given him a sad smile, wondering if the child really knew what kind of life that would lead to. So much fighting.
Eventually, the children had all wandered off or been called home. Jaden had found his way back to the Keep, perching on one of the wooden fences that spanned between buildings. With his back to the wall of one of the buildings that made up Vigil's Keep, he easily balanced himself comfortable. To busy himself, and keep his mind off things, he'd found a piece of wood, slowly whittling away at it with a small dagger. At first, the carving had started out a shapeless mass. But after watching a dog play with a child in the distance, he'd decided to make a Mabari hound. A challenge, but he wasn't going to back down. It helped pass time, at least.
