It was another ordinary day in the life of a Fereldan mercenary, beautiful shining sun and a large group of men trying to kill her and her companions. Glancing to the right she tried to catch sight of the battle going on without her. Barely able to see them through the trees she turned her attention back to her own struggle. She was off to the side in the woods surrounding the makeshift battlefield engaged in a battle of strength with a nasty brute of a warrior. Currently the bastards sword was trying to push through her defenses and carve her in half but she wasn’t about to let that happen.
Foot slipping in the loose earth, daggers crossed she struggled to push all her weight forward. Teeth clenched she glared up at the mercenary in front of her, throwing all her weight forward she tried to twist his sword from his hands and push him back. Straining against him she was prepared to twist when he pulled his sword back, overbalanced she fell forward. Cringing she tried to reach out and catch herself, hoping to roll out of reach of the sword. Before she could do that she was flying through the hair, thrown by the flat of her opponent’s blade. Stunned she tumbled across the clearing.
Trying to regain her bearings she shook her head to clear it of the ringing sound plaguing her. Off in the distance she could hear her temporary traveling companions fighting their own companions. This was meant to be a simple mission to deliver a few packages to Highever where she would separate from this group and meet back up with Henrik and the boys. She wasn’t sure what was in the packages but someone didn’t want them reaching Highever. Why did these types of things always happen when she was on missions without Henrik, every single job ended in some disaster. Refocusing on her surrounding she could make out the sounds of screams and screeching metal in the distance.
Stumbling to her feet she crouched low and warily watched the swordsman come at her, swinging wildly. Narrowing her eyes she adjusted her grip and took a deep breath. Leaning to the side she ducked under his blade and brought up one arm. Blade sinking through his shoddy leather armor like butter she cut across his abdomen. As he flailed about, grasping at his stomach she brought her other dagger round. Blade sinking through flesh she stabbed him in the back. Pulling back from him she watched him crumple to the ground. Stepping on his hand and grinding it to the earth she waited for him to release his sword. Once he did she kicked it away and then ran towards the rest of the fighting.
Looking over the makeshift battlefield she swore, most of her companions were down and the rest weren’t looking to good. The other group of mercenaries easily outnumbered them before her comrades had fallen and now it was clear who would win. The other group had barely lost any men of their own and reinforcements still drifted through the woods to join the battle. Someone really didn’t want those packages to reach Highever.
Running quicker she reached for one of her smaller daggers. Wrenching her arm back she flung it towards one of the few mercenaries with his head exposed. As the dagger sunk into the back of his skull she had the next dagger ready to throw, this one found its home in the neck of a man ready to plunge his sword into one of his companions.
Her arrival had caught the eye of a few of the mercenaries and as they turned to face her she stopped her approach and braced herself. Trying to keep the three approaching men in her sight at all times she slowly started to back up.
Kicking out she pushed one man back only duck as another man’s axe flew for her head. Quickly side-stepping him she scanned her surroundings, the third man was attempting to circle around her and a fourth man was now approaching. Swearing she shuffled to the side doing her best to keep them all at her front, she didn’t need them flanking her.
Out of the corner of her eye she could see her last companion splayed across the ground, sword twisting in his gut as his opponent stood towering over him. The screams rang through the air, echoing through the woods. Eventually the scream petered out and turned to sobbing, then even those died out. With a wet sucking noise the sword was ripped from the dead man’s stomach. Cringing she focused on her own the task at hand. She had to escape before the rest of their comrades arrived.
Readying her stance she waited for her enemies to make the first move. One man lunged at her and she easily evaded him. Turning to plunge a dagger down into his back she blinked when the world was washed away. Dagger still in motion she turned in its direction when she felt it become lodged in her foe. Tearing her dagger from his back she tried to see through the sudden downpour. It wasn’t likely to last long, these strange bursts never did, but it was vital that she use it to her advantage. She would be safe ff she could just make her escape before the rain ended.
Furiously wiping water from her eyes she struggled to see the warriors, barely able to make out her own hands held aloft she continued to move slowly backwards. She could feel the rain lightening but still couldn’t make out the men in front of her. The rain lightened just enough to reveal five warriors, weapons at the ready and reinforcements crawling through the trees. Glaring out at them she continued he slow shuffle backwards, eyes scanning the area. Another step back had her coming to a halt as she crashed into a wall that had not been there before.
