It was spring. Timid tendrils of sunshine sneaked through the large windows in Kinloch hold, highlighting dust motes that were an inevitable part of the voluminous library available to mages and templars alike within the tower.
Ashya walked softly between the bookshelves, eyes bright. At eleven, she had just made a discovery, and naturally, wanted to milk it for all it was worth. Right on her heels followed Seth, her best friend and conspirator, an elf that was two years her junior but her almost constant companion. He had arrived at the tower a few years after Ashya herself, but while she had arrived eager and curious, he had been a terrified waif, afraid of everyone and utterly homesick.
Unable to sleep one night, Ashya had heard him sobbing into his pillow. She had crawled next to him in bed, and comforted him, despite his initial distrust, until he’d somehow relaxed and fallen asleep. The next morning she’d dragged him all around the tower with her, nicking snacks for them both, showing him her favourite hiding places, and generally talking his ear off.
After that, it wasn’t long before Seth settled down to life in the tower. Much to Ashya’s delight, he too possessed a strong sense of humour and shared her love for pranking. After a week they were nigh inseparable, and she led him into one scrape after another, at least as much as their different training regimes allowed, since Ashya was further ahead in her schooling.
Today was no different. Ashya peeked in between the bookshelves, and gestured with a grin to her best friend. He joined her, and a smile spread slowly across his features at the sight. Predictably, Bethen was in the library, in the company of her favourite friends – books. Even better – she was not alone. Alderic, a templar, was with her, and the pair were chatting amiably. Probably about books, of course.
Ashya studied them for a moment from her hiding place, smiling. She didn’t know either of them very well – Bethen was a lovable girl, that much everyone knew, always helpful, and much loved by everyone – enchanters, apprentices, and even the templars were known to be sweet on her. Beth had, in fact, helped her a few times with her spells, and from what she’d seen, Ashya really liked her. She had no doubt that Beth, although still an apprentice, would not stay that way for long.
The other bookworm, Alderic, Ashya liked as well. He was one of the nicest templars in the tower, always polite, always with a smile, even for the mages. And of course, he looked dashing in his armor. Maybe she would have known him better were he not such an avid reader. Ashya herself rarely picked up a book unless it was necessary. There was so much to do that it was pointless to immerse herself in words, or so she felt.
Ashya exchanged a glance with Seth, who nodded and smiled. Right. Time to get the show on the road. Hopefully it would prove fun, at least for her and Seth. “No giggling, now,” she warned her best friend. She straightened, smoothed her skirt and took Seth’s hand in hers. Then they walked out from behind the bookshelves towards Beth and Alderic, looking young, sweet, and innocent. “Hi Beth, hi Alderic,” they chimed in unison, smiling at the pair.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Ashya continued, twisting a lock of hair between her fingers and smiling, looking rather nervous. “But we had a question and…you’re the best person to help us. Maybe you can, too,” she added sweetly, but hesitantly, to Alderic. “If you don’t mind. We could always come back later…if you’re busy…” She knew Beth would not be able to let anyone walk away with a question unanswered if she could help it.
