Thread: A Lesson in Unfriendliness
Who: Lillian Tharelle, Sydni Tethviel
Where: The Tournament at Vigil's Keep
When: 1 Solis, 9:45 (Morning)
Summary: Lillie is just looking for some breakfast before she goes to watch Jill perform in the archery competition. She runs into an unfriendly elf.
Rating: PG (Subject to change)

It was not too early, perhaps about nine o'clock but Lillie wished she'd waken earlier to have a meal at the inn or something. Because now her stomach was sorely unhappy with her. She hadn't slept a great deal the night before, and may have slept in if she could have. But she was excited about the coming competition, about the tournament and seeing all the different wares and entertainment that would be gathered here.

So when she reached the Keep she decided the first thing to do would be to seek out a vendor for something to eat. The bakery had sent someone out, for she could smell the fresh pastries drifting through the air. Her stomach growled slightly and Lillie blushed, ducking through the crowd to locate the cart where it had originated from. She found it had a long line already and debated upon waiting in it. She still had plenty of time before she had to go and find a seat to watch the archery contest from. So she decided to stay and got into the end of the line.

There were people of all sizes and shapes around her, people who were obviously Fereldan, and she spied more than a couple of Orlesian nobles, their noses turned up at the masses as they moved in towards the Keep itself. It had Lillie hiding a smile as she rolled her eyes. She had no doubt there'd be more than a few nobles turning out for the event. Even those from foreign lands who did little but complain and belittle Ferelden would come, of course continuing to complain all the while.

The line slowly inched forward and Lillie tucked her hands into the pockets of her dress. She'd chosen to wear the green cotton one she'd tucked away. It was a bit more daring of a cut than most Fereldans would wear, baring her shoulders. The sleeves were cropped and short and the skirt fell to about mid-calf. Something which she was glad of when she slogged through the dirt and mud that could be common here after a summer storm. She could hear the sounds of the crowd in the distance and figured opening ceremonies must be in full swing. She tapped her foot idly as she waited for the line to move forward so that she could get her food.

Sydni had not left the keep that morning with the intention of tracking down the elusive apostate who was so blessed to have the protection of the Wardens without actually being conscripted. He had, in fact, left it dressed in a plain set of clothing, looking like nothing more exceptional than a elf servant with the full intent of enjoying his morning prior to the afternoon fights in complete anonymity. He expected that once he took the field in the Mage fights, should he decide to wander the crowd during the next few days, those that recognized him would be giving him a wide berth. Recruit or no. In his experience, mages were not well received even with a Templar escort to 'protect' the common rabble from them.

But an hour or so before he had to be at the field for the Archery competition, while meandering through the gathered crowd, he caught sight of a woman matching the general description of that apostate and he just couldn't pass up the opportunity to find out if all the rumors were true.

After he made sure it was her, of course.

He made his way to her side and paused just next to her elbow, voice at a polite level, though the tone could be taken a multitude of ways, "Pardon me, I do hope I'm not bothering you, serrah... but would your name be Lillie Tharelle?"

Lillie was about halfway through the line when someone approached her, asking a question and Lillie was quite honestly shocked into silence for a moment. The person in question, a young pretty elf who was... probably a male, just so happened to know her name. And what she looked like apparently. She was quite certain, that she'd never seen him before in her life, and she was also quite uncomfortable. At the moment, she was wishing she'd tried to get Matthew to come along with her this morning. After all, until Jill finished her archery competition there wasn't likely to be anyone around that she knew. Perhaps after she got her breakfast she'd see if she could find Ordhan. He looked tall and intimidating.

Instead of answering the elf's question directly she tried to make herself appear as if she wasn't nervous at all. Even though she was still wondering how he knew her name. Had word somehow gotten out about her? But who would the Warden Commander be telling such things to? And if this elf knew, who else knew? There were bound to be Templars about for the competition.

Just calm down. The best thing to do was find out who this elf was and how much he knew. And then from there... well she'd figure something out. She smiled slightly, looking a bit confused. "I'm sorry... but who are you?"

If she played the confused card and he sounded like someone dangerous then maybe... just maybe she could convince him that she was not this Lillie Tharelle at all. And twenty years working in brothels had taught her a thing or two about playing dumb. Quite sad how many men preferred an empty-headed girl.

She hadn't actually answered his question, which he noted - but she also looked very confused. There was a good chance Sydni had gotten the wrong woman. He had not actually seen her before, after all...

His eyes ran up and down the length of her, nothing predatory or sexual in the gaze. Merely assessing. The dress cut short and showing off an unseemly amount of leg that even Ferelden women who went about in slacks avoided. It was clearly a foreign cut and not Orlaisian.

When his eyes came back to her face, he continued in the same tone and manner as before, "Apologies, serrah. I am Sydni, Recruit of the Grey Wardens. And you are...?"

Lillie was quiet as the elf looked her over. She didn't feel self-conscious about her appearance or her dress. She'd worn racier garments than this before, even in public. Though granted, publicly acceptable garments in Rivain were a bit different.

She blinked slightly at the polite way he addressed her. Where was this elf from? But then... he mentioned Recruit of the Grey Wardens and she felt a small measure of relief. At least he was with the Wardens in some way, even if he was not truly yet a member. Still, were they telling all their recruits about her even? She frowned slightly at that. It seemed something that would be on a need to know basis, and she didn't think he really needed to know.

"Recruit you say..?" She offered her hand. "I am Lillian Tharelle. I just... am a bit wary to have a stranger approach me knowing my name, as I'm sure you'd understand." She offered him a polite smile. "I wasn't aware recruits would be informed about me."

His eyes moved down to the offered hand and a frown creased his brow. He'd never much liked touching others, but it would be the proper thing to do in this instance. Sydni hesitantly brought his own fingers over to touch hers and after the barest of clasps, drew his hand away to slink behind his back and grip the other there. Firmly putting his own out of reach for the rest of the foreseeable interaction.

With that formality out of the way, he returned the polite smile to his face and nodded to her, rocking back a bit on his heels. His tone taking a falsely saccharine turn, "Well, the situation isn't exactly normal. Most people like us wouldn't get outright protection without having the rite of Conscription invoked. But it's my understanding someone felt an overabundance of compassion for you. If what I've heard is true, at least."

He purposely avoided replying to her comment about recruits knowing or not knowing about her. He'd been informed of the apostate healer only because he would be spilling a lot of his own blood for the wardens should he survive the joining - and it would be good to know whom he could be expected to trust or not trust with his life should he cut a bit too deep. And with healing mages a rarity... well, she didn't have to know that was why he had been told. Let her assume what she would.

His handshake was weak and hesitant, making Lillie gather that he didn't care for touching others, or that he simply wasn't strong willed. Either way, it was a strange first impression. She gave him a polite smile and placed her own hand back in her pocket, inching forward with the rest of the line.

The sweetness in his statement, paired with his words, came across as false enough. Lillie had spent many years reading people, listening to their deepest secrets. She let no expression cross her face for a moment, though she was irritated at his mention of people like us. To even drop a hint of magery in a public place was dangerous. As a recruit, he was safe. She did not have the same guarantee. The Warden Commander had promised her all the protection he could offer; she would be under the guardianship of whatever Wardens she was sent out on missions with. Most people would not question that, but some people who knew better the intricacies of Chantry law and the loopholes offered to the Wardens would know it would not stand up if pressed. That meant that advertising her status outside of battle was not necessarily wise.

Lillie lifted a brow, mildly. "I doubt compassion is the driving force behind the offer of protection. We both know that if the agreement were put to trial it would not stand. Is it necessary for us to discuss this? And if so, could it not wait until I obtain my breakfast so that we might move to a more private area?"

For a recruit, and a mage, he did not seem to know to be discreet. His false sweetness also seemed to imply to her that this Sydni had taken issue with her for some reason. Perhaps for the fact that she had been offered the protection she had without needing to endure the trial of the Grey Wardens. It got her back up. Who was he to question her so? Did she have to offer a reason for why she might deserve it? She had exposed herself to save the life of another. Perhaps if this elf understood that he would see she was no dangerous malificer hiding behind the shield of the Wardens.

"All recruits must participate in the tournament," he replied, feet inching forward to match her slow steps, "regardless of our proven abilities. So, no, it could not wait. I am required on the field for the archery competition, and from the looks of it, getting your breakfast could take that long. Of course, if you stayed in the keep, you'd have already been served it - free of charge no less."

Since Sydni was not one of the ones actually in line, he let himself wander in an arch behind her back and around to the other side. His eyes on the ground rather than her, then tilting back to look at the sun. Checking the time no doubt. Satisfied he still had plenty to continue his little fact-finding mission, he once again completely ignored one of her questions and continued with his own, "Outside of your circumstances - compassion being the main reason or not-" his eyes raked her up and down again, this time in a far more crude and somewhat disgusted assessment of her looks that completely implied the male libido at work in her arrangement.

Showing a bit of discretion, his voice did drop into a quieter tone that wouldn't travel farther than the two of them with the noise the rest of the growing crowd was making, "I have heard sorely little about this person I may be expected to trust my life with one day. Where are you from?"

"Well I'm not a recruit, nor a Warden, so there's no space for me at the Keep," she replied easily enough, though she could not deny her irritation with the persistent elf. And why on earth would a mage, if he claimed to be like her be in an archery competition anyway? For a small, spiteful moment, she hoped he would lose. Then she pushed it aside with a mental sigh. She needed to take a step back and try to be reasonable with the recruit. After all, once he became a Warden he would have to take responsibility of her. Even if she was getting tired of his questioning and his poor attitude. Lillie had dealt with worse than this from drunken customers.

When his eyes swept over her, his voice full of implication, Lillie grit her teeth, her eyes flashing in return. "If you wish to know the circumstances and the whys, you ought to address your questions to Conlan Delaine, because it's not that sort of bargain. So don't go thinking you're going to get some sort of similar payment from me." She looked to the line ahead of her, her venomous words had been delivered so pleasantly and in a soft tone that barely anyone had noticed, though the man in front of her was now giving them sidelong glances. Thankfully there were now a mere four people between her and the goal of breakfast, for which she was increasingly losing her appetite.

"I am from Denerim," she replied, not elaborating on the topic. He had not encouraged friendly conversation, and Lillie was loathe to give the elf anything more. Generally she was a social person, speaking with ease, but this Sydni did not foster a friendly banter.

"I wouldn't want such a thing from you," he sneered, all pretenses gone with the disgusting thought of sleeping with her. Not so much her, exactly, just humans in general... His eyes shut and he shivered briefly, almost violently as the visual decided not to leave his head and made his stomach start to curl.

Had he been honest with himself, he would have had to admit she was a very attractive woman and it was only the curve of her ears that was getting to him. But that was a bit of introspection on a topic that he wasn't about to acknowledge any time soon. So with a shake of his head to bring himself back to the subject at hand, he returned to his questioning, "Denerium? Really? I was born there. In the alienage, of course. Haven't been there in 15 years. How is the city doing?"

Lillie rolled her eyes at his reaction. She was more than aware of her effect on men in general. After all, one didn't keep clientelle in a job like her's had been if they weren't easy on the eyes. Self esteem was not something she was lacking, though she did not think overly highly of herself either. Another person got their order and the line moved forward again. She was half tempted to get her breakfast and simply flee, but there'd be no avoiding the recruit for good. He was going to be a Warden and that was that, after all.

She sighed softly. "I've hardly been there in fifteen years myself. I lived in Rivain then. But it seemed to be well, last time I passed through. Of course, the alienage hasn't changed all that much, after all." She shrugged. "But is that ever a surprise?" There was a small amount of bitterness in her voice when she spoke. "Aside from that, Queen Anora's rule has seemed to fare the people of Denerim well enough."

At this he was a bit shocked. She'd taken the time to visit the Alienage? And had seen it before? His general distaste for her slipped a bit. Most humans weren't that concerned with the elves unless they were of the Chantry... or collecting taxes... or several other horrid things. He wasn't really concerned with them himself, it was more the principle of the matter.

Cautiously, he asked, "And what in the Alienage would interest you that you'd choose to pass through rather than avoid it?"

Lillie fell silent at his question, suddenly aware of what her little drop of information had let slip. Most humans didn't go to alienages, most humans weren't welcome there and avoided them in general. Most humans preferred to remain blind to the kind of suffering the city elves endured. But most humans also did not have an elf for a mother. At last, blessedly, she had reached the front of the line, and she distracted herself from the discussion by ordering a pastry; a hand-sized flaky spiral stuffed with cheese and nuts and dusted lightly with sugar. She took it, wrapped in a piece of waxy paper and paid the woman at the stall before stepping beside Sydni.

Sighing, she lowered her voice. Perhaps the truth would make the elf more friendly. But it could backfire as well. There were many elves who held disdain for others of their kind who dared to sleep with a human. "I grew up in the alienage in Denerim," she said, walking away from the crowds with him. "My mother was an elf."

He followed along, wide-eyed and shocked. She'd been in the alienage and hadn't been picked up by the Templars? How old was she? Had her family gotten her to Rivain when she was very young? Rivain was known for their leniency on mages. What was she doing back in Ferelden if she'd been there? So many questions.

He checked the time again. He still had some. Sydni kept his voice low, but kept to her side as he started in on them. Like a spring bubbling forth, "How long ago was that? Were you there during the battle with the Archdemon? Did you leave before or after? How old are you? How did you escape the chantry? Why did you come back when Rivain is so much better to mages?"

Lillie leaned against the outside wall of the Keep, sticking to the shadows and away from the crowds. She held the wrapped pastry in her hands, not bothering to open it yet. She didn't feel quite as hungry as she had earlier, and she wasn't comfortable enough in Sydni's company to eat while they spoke. She felt the need to remain formal, despite his earlier rudeness.

She was silent a moment as she processed his many questions. Why did he need to know all of this information? Why did he even care? Should it not be enough that the Warden Commander trusted her? Why should she be grilled by a recruit? She curled her free hand into her pocket and took a moment to organize her thoughts.

"It's simple enough. Ferelden is my home. I left after the Siege of Denerim and returned only recently." She did not bother answering questions on her age. She did not owe this elf every detail of her life. "I did not use my abilities, and that is why I was not caught sooner, I suppose. I was alone most of the time and there was no one else to see." She lifted her chin. "Why do you demand so many answers of me? I have done nothing to deserve your disdain or suspicion. My only crime was saving the life of a dying woman and exposing what I am. Do you think yourself more deserving of freedom? You are yourself the same thing," an apostate was the unspoken implication here. "Why are you suspicious of another?"

"I am far from the same as you," Sydni returned quickly. A sneer replacing the surprise and curiousity that had been there a moment before. Any sympathy he may have been starting to feel replaced by the cold dislike that most humans earned. Why should he expect some girl with a drop of elven blood to be any different than the others?

Never-the-less, his voice remained hushed. He may not have liked her, but he wasn't about to yell it to the heavens that he was a mage, "I am not some half-blood who lucked out in not being dragged off as a child. I have paid the dues you avoided. And you have done nothing to earn my trust or the support of the Wardens beyond saving the life of a woman. Many have done so before and many will do so long after your tenuous tenure is up. And since I'm the one who's going to have to trust my life to you on the orders of my Commander, I see no reason why I shouldn't know as much as possible."

A particularly loud cheer sounded in the distance and his head whipped about to check the time. With another frown, he looked back at Lillie, "I have a contest to participate in. And that is far more important than you." With that made imminently clear, he turned on his heal, nose up, and headed for the arena.

Lillie's brows furrowed at the elf and she stared at him in silence as he spoke. His words were low but there was still venom in them. As if Lillie were to blame for the fact that his magery had been discovered as a child. As if it were a great unfairness that she had not been caught herself. And perhaps from his point of view, it was. So, she had been lucky. But she hadn't hid herself to spite those mages who had been found out. And she would not apologize for that.

She lifted her chin, her eyes hard at his words. She didn't owe him anything. If she got stuck following this elf around once he was made Warden then she would use her magic to aid him, but beyond that, she was not in debt to him. Her debt was to the Warden Commander and to Conlan, beyond that she was simply keeping her word. She would be entrusting her life to this elf as much as he would to her, and so far she knew nothing other than the fact that he was a mage, a Warden recruit and most likely been in the Circle before that. The only other information was his poor attitude, and that hardly spoke on his behalf. If he treated everyone in such a manner then he would be a poor leader indeed.

She rolled her eyes at his words about her lack of importance, because the statement seemed so childish and petty. Lillie herself was years beyond such behavior. She watched him walk away, feeling annoyed that her morning had suffered from his sour presence. She waited until he'd disappeared into the crowds before making her way towards the tournament field. She would watch Jill in the archery competition and then she would get to spend some time with her friend. It was best to just put the whole encounter out of her mind.
