After seeing Dr. Brightstar out, Melinda knew she had two phone calls to make. Neither were going to be particularly pleasant - not at 6:13 on a Sunday morning. But there was work to be done. She pulled out her phone and dialed Brigid, hoping she knew well enough to answer on the first attempt.
Brigid was very happily asleep in a bed that wasn’t hers. She always kept her phone on though in case of emergencies. So it was her ringtone that stirred her from her sleep. Brigid whined a little bit. She sat up to see Alistair next to her before reaching for her phone. “Morning, Melinda.”
“My apologies for waking you, Brigid, but I’m afraid we’ve had a serious incident this morning.”
“What are you talking about? What happened?” Brigid said sitting up a bit more and pulling up the sheet to cover up as she leaned back against the headboard.
Melinda sighed. “It would appear that members of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement had quite the night all around Salem, resulting in a number of potential exposures. The worst of which is the animation of the Conant statue in Salem Common to duel followed by a few impressive light display literally over the town.”
Brigid had to try really hard not to laugh out loud but at least Melinda couldn’t see her smiling over the phone. Besides… she was still irritated about being woken up this early. “Great… has any of that gone public with the nomajs? Where are the Aurors now?”
“I would imagine some of it made it onto social media.” There was absolutely no amusement in Melinda’s tone. “Obliviators have been out in force trying to mitigate the damage.”
Brigid got out of bed and grabbed Alistair’s discarded shirt so she could go have this conversation about disturbing him. “Great. In that case, if it’s made it on nomaj social media, we could probably obliviate most of them to think it’s some kind of hoax or fake video,” Brigid did suggest. “As far as anything on our network, I can talk to Alistair about that,” she said looking at where she left him before going out into the hall. “Any other incidents that stand out?”
“I asked Miguel to see if he could follow up with Alistair, however, if you have that handled.” Melinda paused just a moment, allowing the unsaid to be heard. “Otherwise, I don’t have all of the reports yet, but from what I have heard a few incidents of open magic use and general idiocy for lack of a better term. At least we have a small window before the Sunday news goes live.”
Brigid was not concerned about what Melinda was ‘not saying’. She’d ask Alistair because it was easier for her to do it right now. She sighed at the general explanation. “I’m not in Salem right now, so I’ll make some phone calls to my staff to get on that. How do you want this to go? Put the blame on the DMLE?” she asked wanting to know what Melinda wanted done. Brigid knew which way she wanted to spin it but she had to defer to the delegate.
“Right now just let’s worry about containing this. I won’t be accused of pointing fingers when there is work to be done first.” Melinda also wanted to make a few phone calls before any official statements came out.
“Alright. After I talk to Alistair, I’ll head back to Salem and get into the office. From there, I’ll catch up with the obliviators,” Brigid suggested. “Do you want me to meet up with you? Anything specifically you need to me to get to first?”
Oh how the answer really wanted to be slap both McMullen and Graves, but Melinda held her tongue. “Just do your job, I’ll have a briefing waiting for you when you arrive with further instructions.”
“Alright. Your office?” Brigid asked to clarify unless Melinda was going to head her off at her office, or if she wanted her to meet her where the incidents happened in the first place.
“I’ll have it delivered to your office,” said Melinda. She couldn’t guarantee she would still be in her office for any length of time. “Call if you need anything.”
“I will. Call me if anything else comes up,” Brigid said. “Talk to you later,” she said waiting for Melinda to end the call. So much for a lazy Sunday and sexy sleep in.
