Brooke’s hand rubbed at her lower back. It had been sore all night, and even now she’d stretched and showered. Aches weren’t that unusual lately, but she definitely felt… different. She got to her feet slowly and stretched, lifting her arms as high in the air as she could. As she did, she felt something like the false contractions she’d been having for a while, but … much more intense.
“Woah,” she said. She rested her hand on her stomach. “I think that was a real one…”
The
--
Jeremy stood up and walked over to her. "Wow. Does that mean you think it's starting?"
--
She nodded. “Maybe. I feel really weird, too. Like… keyed up?” She wrapped her arms around him. “I’m gonna see if it happens again before I tell everyone. It could just be I pulled something stretching.”
--
He placed his hands on her sides and rested his forehead against hers. "Wanna lay down?"
--
She smiled. “If you’ll be the big spoon,” she said with a wink.
--
"Of course," he said. He led her to the bed and took her hands to help her onto the bed.
--
They settled down and she pressed back against him, running her hand along the arm he draped over her. “Mmm, perfect.”
She was feeling really aware of everything about her body right now, so she tried to think of something else.
“Talk to me,” she said. “Distract me. Tell me which of Karen’s husbands you like best.”
--
He pressed a kiss to her neck. "I'm not sure I could say I really liked any of them. I mean Freddie was okay I guess. I always hoped she would marry Nick. I think it would have been cool to have him be properly part of the family. Like more than Brian's brother."
--
Brooke smiled sadly. “Poor Karen.” She ran her hand along his arm, wishing she could meet the rest of his family. “Your family sound… a little insane, but pretty cool. Do you think they’d … like, approve?”
--
"Oh, yeah. Totally. I mean.... My Dad might not but not because of you. He generally never approves of anything I do. You already know Juliet loves you. Karen would totally love you. Brian hates everyone so.... I wouldn't worry about that. My mother will love you make me happy. Patrick will be happy for me I'm sure."
--
She lifted his hand to kiss it when he mentioned his dad. She knew that feeling so well.
“Yeah? That’s good to know. You have such a big family. It’s just … well, me and my mother and … yeah, she’ll like this for the wrong reasons. But like… Haley and Nathan and Lucas and Peyton and all the Tree Hill family... I bet they’d love you.”
--
"Yeah? You really think so?" he asked. "I hope they do."
--
She nodded. “They totally will. And when we have our twelve babies my family will be just … perfect.” She looked back at him over her shoulder, smiling.
--
"Yeah, it totally will be," he said, kissing her nose.
--
She kissed him softly. “It’s pretty perfect right now, though- ohhh!” she said, hand reaching for her bump. “Yeah, there it is again. I think it’s a contraction. Like… thirty minutes apart?”
--
"Yeah that sounds right. What do you think we should do?"
--
She bit her lip. “It’s early. Early early, and I don’t even know if they’re regular. But I should tell the guys.”
“Maybe I’ll send Trixie a message so she knows something is happening, and we could call around to Enjolras and Grantaire until it’s time to go to the infirmary?”
--
He nodded his head. "Okay. I can pack some of your stuff up and head to their room."
--
She smiled. “Thank you, honey. Wow, I’m going to have a baby today…”
She pulled herself up and reached for her tablet, sending a message to Trixie before she climbed off the bed.
--
"Yes, you are. And soon we can start getting ready to have our own one."
He grabbed a bag and started to pack.
--
She grinned. “Yes. Three months, Trixie said. Then we can start trying.” She got to her feet. “Kinda nervous about this part though,” she admitted, rubbing her bump.
--
He slung the bag over his shoulder and walked over to her, placing her hands on her bump. "Totally understandable. But you are gonna rock this."
--
She smiled at him. “Thanks, honey.” She kissed him softly. “Let’s go tell the guys they’re about to become parents.”
--
"Totally," he said, offering her his arm.
--
They headed to the guys’ rooms and knocked on the door. Combeferre opened it with a smile. “Hello, Brooke.”
“Hi,” she said. “Are Enjolras and Grantaire here?”
Grantaire came up to the door. “We are. Come in, we’re going to have breakfast soon.”
Brooke grinned as she walked in. “Thanks. That sounds good. So… how would you feel about becoming a father today?” she asked, glancing between Grantaire and Enjolras. “I mean, not that I think you have much choice…”
--
Enjolras's eyes widened and he looked at Brooke's bump and then at Grantaire. He smiled widely and then looked back at Brooke again. "Really? Come in, sit down! Or do you want to lie down? Do you need anything?"
--
Brooke smiled. “I’m good,” she said as she took a seat. It’s early. Very early. I told Trixie and she said to keep an eye on the timing, if they start becoming regular or if anything changes. She’ll come by to check me out in a little bit.”
Grantaire grinned and reached for Enjolras’ hand. “Okay. Wow.” He had no idea what to do now.
Combeferre smiled. “How about I make us all breakfast, then?” he suggested.
--
Enjolras squeezed Grantaire's hand tightly.
"I can help. Unless you would prefer if I stayed?" Penny asked.
Jeremy set the bag down and grabbed some cushions for Brooke, handing a couple to her and leaving the others near her. He then grabbed a glass of water and left it on the coffee table for her.
--
Brooke smiled at Jeremy. “Thanks sweetie.” She glanced at penny. “No I'm good for now. Nothing's happening for a while. And food sounds good.”
She tilted her head. “If you guys want others to come around that's okay.”
Grantaire bit his lip. “We don't want to crowd you. It's up to you.”
“Hmm. Maybe some people that have done this before. Cosette, and maybe your mom?” she said, glancing at Enjolras.
--
Penny smiled and then took Combeferre's hand. "Okay. We'll go make breakfast."
Enjolras nodded his head. "Okay, I'll send them both a message." He grabbed his iPad and tapped out a message. "They should be here soon."
--
They arrived, and everyone had breakfast and it was all very relaxed, though everyone was so excited about what was happening. The contractions were still far apart but they were definitely getting more intense.
Trixie arrived after a couple of hours. “Well, how are we doing?” She asked.
“Getting there. Kinda slowly.”
“It often is at this point.”
She checked Brooke over in one of the bedrooms and said things were progressing nicely.
Diane was so good to have around. Cosette too, but as cosette hasn't really had this part of labour it was a little different for her.
“This part took a whole day with Enjolras,” Diane said.
Brooke's eyes widened. “Let's hope she doesn't take after him too much!”
--
Enjolras smiled at his mother. Having her here when his daughter was born meant so much to him. Something he had never expected to have. All of this was something he had never expected to happen before arriving on this ship.
"I am still hoping that she is biologically Grantaire's," he said.
--
“It was worth every second,” Diane said.
“She will be,” Brooke said. She rubbed her stomach. “I'm gonna miss having her around.”
Grantaire smiled. “Visit as often as you want.”
--
Enjolras nodded his head in agreement. "Yes, you are welcome any time."
Jeremy grinned a little. He knew soon after they would be trying to make a baby of their own.
--
She smile at Jeremy, thinking the same thing.
Combeferre wrapped his arm around Penny and pulled her close, kissing the top of her head as he smiled widely. He was so excited for Enjolras and Grantaire, but knowing this would be them in a few months… it made him even more excited.
--
Penny knew what Combeferre was thinking. She had to resist placing her hand on her stomach, thinking about the little life growing inside her.
Enjolras grinned widely at Grantaire. This was really happening. They were going to be parents soon. "Is there anything else we can get you, Brooke?"
--
Combeferre rubbed her arm. “Yes, if you’re hungry, or anything, we can get food…”
Brooke shook her head, then bit her lip. “Oooh, they’re not kidding around any more,” she said, reaching for Jeremy’s hand and squeezing it through the contraction.
--
Jeremy squeezed her hand lightly in return. "Should I get Trixie?" he asked.
--
“Not just yet. They’re still like… fifteen minutes, right? She said wait until they were under ten.” She smiled. “Soon, though. I don’t think she’ll take after Enjolras if she is his. I might walk a bit though, that should help keep things moving.”
Grantaire smiled, and took her other hand, helping Jeremy help her up.
She paced up and down the room, the contractions getting closer. They took turns walking with her, taking one side while Jeremy took the other.
She stopped suddenly, gripping Jeremy and Enjolras’ arms. “Oh, wow, watch your shoes, my water just broke.”
--
Jeremy and Enjolras both moved back slightly. "Okay, now is it time to get Trixie?" Jeremy asked.
--
Brooke nodded. “It’s time to go to the infirmary. Maybe let her know?”
Grantaire nodded, diving for his tablet. He sent a quick message and grabbed Brooke’s bag and the bag they had packed for the baby. “Right.”
Diane smiled. “Should I stay?”
“Um, maybe come? It’s good having someone who’s been here around.”
Diane smiled. “Of course.”
Combeferre smiled. “Good luck,” he said.
--
Jeremy and Enjolras were both still near Brooke to help her to the infirmary.
"Should I stay?" Cosette asked.
--
Brooke hesitated. “I think … that four is a lot to have in there, I don’t know if Trixie will allow any more,” she said. “And … well, it’s Diane’s granddaughter.”
--
Cosette smiled warmly. "Of course," she said. She was in no way offended.
Jeremy and Enjolras out of the room and toward the infirmary. Enjolras still could hardly believe this was happening. He glanced back at Grantaire, smiling widely.
--
Grantaire grinned back, and Diane rubbed his back as they made their way through the corridor. Their joy was infectious.
Trixie examined her, and then helped Brooke settle in. She did encourage her to keep walking, because it was good to help her through it. But once she got there things really sped up, and before Brooke knew it Trixie was brightly telling her it was almost time.
“Baby is doing splendidly. Are you ready, Brooke?”
Brooke nodded, sitting up in the bed and taking a deep breath. “Yeah. I’m ready.” She glanced over her shoulder at Jeremy, who was kneeling behind her and holding both her hands.
“Okay, do you want to see baby be born?” Trixie asked.
Grantaire hesitated. “I - we’ll wait up here,” he said. “Unless you…” he said, glancing at Enjolras.
--
Jeremy smiled at her. "Love you," he said.
Enjolras looked at Grantaire. "No, I am okay with waiting here also." He was entirely unfamiliar with lady parts and perfectly content to stay that way.
--
“Love you too.” Brooke took a deep breath and leaned back against Jeremy, gripping his hands and bracing herself as a contraction hit and she started to push. Even if Trixie hadn’t told her to she would need to, right now. It felt good, like instinct was taking over.
“Good, Brooke, very good. Grantaire, take this mask and help her if she needs it,” Trixie said, turning on the gas and holding a mask out. Grantaire took it.
Brooke gasped as it faded. “Diane, can you… tell me what’s happening?”
“Of course,” Diane said, moving down beside Trixie. “You’re doing wonderfully.”
“Absolutely,” Trixie said.
--
Enjolras rubbed Grantaire's back and Jeremy pressed kisses to Brooke's head. "You're doing so great. You're totally the wettest."
--
Brooke grinned, psyching herself up for the next one. It was so good having him here, anchoring her. She gripped his hands tightly as she pushed, and pushed again, and heard Trixie tell her to keep going, Diane to say that the head was delivered and finally, finally, it was over. She felt such a rush of adrenaline and joy and relief as the baby was born, and sagged back against Jeremy with tears rolling down her cheeks.
Grantaire heard the tiny little cry and for a second, everything stopped. They had a baby. A daughter. He looked at Enjolras, gripping his hand and suddenly terrified, afraid to look at her, but wanting more than ever to see.
“She’s perfect,” Diane said. “Well done, Brooke.”
Trixie smiled. “She is. Would one of you like to cut the cord?” It wasn’t something she’d ever offered back home, but it was a common thing in the future, so she’d read.
--
Jeremy wrapped his arms around Brooke from behind when she sagged against him.
Enjolras stopped the moment he heard the cry too. He used his free hand to caress Grantaire's cheek. "Would you like to cut the cord, my love?"
--
Grantaire swallowed. “I - is it … safe?”
Trixie smiled. “Perfectly.” She pulled the sheet down to cover Brooke a little, then beckoned him over. “Come say hello, there’s a little girl here who very much wants to meet you.”
Grantaire didn’t let go of Enjolras’ hand, but tugged him down to Trixie with him. He couldn’t breathe as he looked at the little red thing half wrapped in a blanket. She was still crying, softly. Trixie reached for his hand and he let go of Enjolras’, letting Trixie show him what to do.
“There we are,” Trixie said, wrapping her up securely. “And there you are, daddy.” She handed the baby to Grantaire, and he swallowed. She was so small, and so precious. He looked up at Enjolras, in awe.
--
Enjolras followed him and looked at the baby. Their baby. Their daughter. Enjolras was staring at her when Grantaire looked at him. He reached out and ran his finger along her cheek gently. His eyes welled with tears and he looked at Brooke. "Thank you, so so much."
--
Grantaire turned away from Enjolras, nodding as he looked over at Brooke. “Yes. So much, she’s - she’s perfect. Thank you.”
Brooke smiled, tears still running down her cheek as she leaned against Jeremy. “You’re welcome. God, the look on your face… it was worth all of it.”
--
Enjolras looked down at the baby again. "She is so perfect. So tiny and perfect."
--
Grantaire nodded. “Do you want to hold her?” he asked, looking up at Enjolras.
--
Enjolras nodded his head. "If you don't mind."
--
“Of course not.” He handed her to Enjolras, staring in awe at Enjolras and their child. Their daughter.
--
Enjolras held her carefully in his arms and lowered his head to carefully kiss her forehead. "I love you so much already."
--
Grantaire felt something ache in his chest as he watched Enjolras kiss her. That was… too much. His heart was going to burst. He wrapped his arm around him and leaned close.
“I love you both,” he said softly.
--
He leaned back against Grantaire. "I love you, too. And we have a daughter, Grantaire. A beautiful daughter."
--
Grantaire nodded. “She is. She really, really is.”
Trixie finished up with Brooke, who left to take a shower, and she came over for the baby. “Just going to check her out, get her cleaned and dressed. Then you can go back to your daddies, little one,” she cooed. “Hello. I’m your … well, we’ll say Aunt Trixie, because it’s much too complicated to explain otherwise.”
She examined her, taking a little swab of her cheek and then handing her back to Grantaire. Diane had a turn holding her too, but when Brooke was settled in a bed in the infirmary, just for a night, Grantaire came over to her. “This is the most incredible thing anyone has ever done for us. And we’ll never be able to thank you. But here, it’s time you met her on this side. Sweetheart, this is Aunt Brooke, and she is so special.” He handed her over, and Brooke’s eyes stung as she took her.
“Hey, honey. Hi. Oh look at you, look how perfect you are.”
--
Enjolras couldn't stop smiling. "Yes, we will never be able to thank you. But there is a small gesture we can make. So say hello to Nicole Brooke Leclaire."
--
Brooke looked up, her eyes filling with tears that she tried to blink back. “Really? You don’t have to…”
Grantaire shook his head. “We want to. We wouldn’t have her if it wasn’t for you.”
“Such a pretty name,” she said, looking down at the baby. “For such a pretty girl, yes. Yes, you are, so pretty.”
She looked to the side at Jeremy. “Say hi to Uncle Jeremy, Nicole.”
--
Enjolras nodded his head in agreement with Grantaire. "It doesn't even come close to repaying you for your kindness."
Jeremy grinned at her and ran his finger along her cheek. "She's like a miniature Grantaire."
--
Grantaire blinked. “I don’t think so. I can’t really tell, though.” The idea that she was his was… impossible. She was so perfect.
“Often the case at this age. We’ll know soon though,” Trixie said. “Well, if she is Grantaire’s.”
“Has she opened her eyes yet?” Brooke asked.
“Not for long enough to see,” Trixie said.
--
Enjolras rubbed his back. "She well could be," he said.
--
“My money is still on you,” Grantaire said. He smiled at Enjolras.
“I think Jeremy might be right. The shape of her face… kinda like yours,” Brooke said. “If there is a pool, I’m betting on you.”
Grantaire laughed. “There’s no pool. I’m surprised Courfeyrac didn’t start one, actually. Oh! We need to tell everyone.” He smiled widely.
--
Enjolras grinned. "And mine on you."
He nodded his head. "Yes, we should tell everyone. I will send a message to our friends." He grabbed his iPad and tapped out a message.
--
A little while later, Brooke had rested up and Enjolras and Grantaire had spent their first few hours with Nicole. Diane and Trixie had taught them how to dress and feed and change her, and their friends had all come over to say hello.
“Me first me first me first!” said Courfeyrac excitedly. He crossed to Enjolras and grinned. “Come and meet your favourite uncle!” he cooe at the baby.
--
Enjolras smiled but didn't move to hand her over to Courfeyrac right away. "You seem certain she will favour you. Are you planning to be the favourite uncle of all babies in our group?"
--
Grantaire grinned. “He’s going to try, but I’m definitely Fantine’s favourite.” He smiled at Marius and Cosette. “Bring her over, Marius, let her meet her new little friend.”
Marius smiled, bringing a very wriggly Fantine over to Enjolras. “Look, little one, it’s Nicole. Say hello.”
Fantine stopped wriggling and looked at the baby with wide eyes. She chewed her finger. “Bah.”
Marius kissed her cheek. “You’ll have lots of fun playing with her when she’s a little bigger, won’t you?”
--
Enjolras smiled at Fantine. "Yes, you can both play together and be best friend and have a lot of fun," he said. He looked at Nicole again, just not able to keep his eyes off her and he smiled instantly.
--
Grantaire smiled and moved beside Enjolras. Fantine reached out to him with a smile, and he laughed and took her. “Okay, okay. Hello,” he said.
Courfeyrac sighed. “Let me see Nicole! Grantaire can’t be her favourite uncle…”
“I could,” Combeferre pointed out with a smirk.
--
"Yes, you could have some competition with Combeferre," he said, eyes still on Nicole.
--
Courfeyrac scoffed. “I will be this little one’s favourite. If you ever let me hold her. Please?” he asked, batting his eyelashes.
--
Enjolras sighed. "Okay, fine" he said. "But not because you batted your eyelashes at me. That only works for Grantaire." He moved his arms and very reluctantly handed her over to Courfeyrac, but standing close by.
--
Grantaire laughed, bouncing Fantine in his arms and watching as Courfeyrac cradled Nicole.
“It so is, it was so my eyelashes. Yes, it was, Nicole. Your papa loves my eyelashes,” he said with a smile. “God, Enjolras, she’s so teeny and precious, I could eat her up!”
--
He looked at Grantaire and grinned widely when Courfeyrac called him 'papa'. That sounded amazing.
"Yes, she is just.... perfect," he said, smiling widely and gently stroking her cheek.
--
Grantaire smiled at him, leaning in to look. “Yes, see, Fantine? It’s Nicole.”
Fantine turned around in his arms and reached out to Marius.
“Ahh, see, Fantine, Grantaire has a shinier baby now, you need to make Courfeyrac your favourite uncle,” Courfeyrac said teasingly. “And you too, Nicole, you too, yes! God, she’s incredible.”
--
Cosette smiled at them. "I'm afraid she might already have her mind made up but we'll see."
Enjolras couldn't stop looking at Nicole. She was just so completely perfect. And he loved her so much. He just felt so happy he thought he might burst.
Penny leaned against Combeferre a little, looking down at her stomach for a moment and smiling.
--
Combeferre grinned and kissed her head softly. He was so excited - both for Enjolras and Grantaire and for… their baby.
Grantaire smiled. “Okay, let someone else have a go, because we’re not letting her go for very long. Jehan? Cosette? Who wants to go next?”
--
Nicole was passed amongst the others and Gavroche wandered into the room. "Right, where is she this?" he asked with a sigh. Penny was just handing her to Grantaire. Gavroche looked at her. "She's all red and wrinkly. Is she meant to look like that?"
--
Grantaire crouched slightly and showed her to Gavroche. “Yes, all newborns look like that. Her name is Nicole. Do you want to hold her?”
--
"I guess," Gavroche said with a shrug. He did out his hands out for her though.
--
Grantaire handed her over carefully, showing Gavroche how to cradle her head. “There you are. Gavroche will look out for you, Nicole.” He smiled at Gavroche.
--
Gavroche peered down at her. "I guess she's kinda cute for a something so red and wrinkly." That was the biggest compliment they would get from Gavroche.
--
Grantaire grinned. “Thank you, Gavroche.” He smiled up at Enjolras warmly. He was so happy, so happy she was here.
--
Enjolras smiled widely at Grantaire and wrapped his arm around him, kissing his forehead. He was so happy too.
