It wasn't that Benny hadn't been listening to Cooper when he'd explained how dangerous Times Square was, it was more that he had no real idea of where Times Square actually was. Sure, he'd been to the city more times than he could count, but he'd always taken a bus or a cab, never just his feet. Besides, the place did look a bit different now, didn't it?
That was how he found himself walking cluelessly right down Fashion Avenue, and similarly, how he found himself running as fast as his legs would carry him in the opposite direction.
He'd gotten nearly to Penn Station before he realized exactly where he was and by then, it seemed, it was too little, too late. The sun hadn't gone down yet, thank god, but when he saw the shambling shadows of a group of three or four "people" walking down the street right towards him, he knew better than to stick around.
He started running, ducking into an alley straight away and then serpentine through the back paths. He couldn't hear if they were following him over the sound of his own breathing in his ears but he could only assume that they were, so he kept going.
The loud crash of a dumpster being unceremoniously ran into or pushed aside confirmed the worst and Benny chanced a look over his shoulder to find that two of the three Infected he'd noticed in the street had taken up the chase. He cursed, the muscles in his legs burning but the adrenaline surge in his system refusing to wane.
It was going to take a miracle for him to make it out of this alive. People say that you're life flashes before your eyes in times like this, but Benny didn't see anything but a bunch of ruined buildings and dirty pavement and...Wait a minute, that guy didn't move like an Infected.
The next sequence of events happened in very rapid succession.
Not quite sure if he was hallucinating but seeing no other real alternative, Benny made a sharp turn and dove for the Not-Infected like something right out of a Die Hard movie. He may have even yelled 'Get down!', he couldn't be bothered to remember. Regardless, he managed to catch the Not-Infected by the waist and with a sheer force of body weight and momentum, spin both of them to the side, into what appeared to be a loading dock full of partly crushed card board boxes, broken shipping creates and a large, overturned blue garbage bin.
Benny didn't pause for introductions or pleasantries, using the momentum from the fall to roll the ungraceful pile he and the Not-Infected had landed in, into the relatively safe shadow of the blue garbage bin.
If they had been in a movie, Benny decided, that all would have happened in slow motion. Bullet-Time, even.
Not thirty seconds later, a group of Infected (apparently having grown from two to four) rounded the corner but continued to run blindly straight ahead.
