Grace wasn't the best cook, but what she made could be considered edible by most human standards. She had experienced a pretty bland day at work, but she was still tired. Sometimes it felt like her slow days were more exhausting than her exciting ones. She stirred the macaroni in the pot and flipped the veggie patties in the frying pan. Grace was a vegetarian and her aunt didn't seem to mind the absence of meat in their home.
"Marion, dinner is just about done!" She raised her voice so she could be heard. In the small home, it didn't take much. There were two bedrooms, a single bathroom, a living room/dining room and a kitchen. It was all they really needed, but sometimes it felt exceptionally small. She dished out the macaroni and cheese, a veggie patty, and some broccoli onto two plates, turned off the stove and carried them to the table.
She sat down and waited for her aunt to join her. She clasped her hands and settled them into her lap, ready to say the prayer over the food before they began eating. She was thinking about the homework she needed to do before she had to go to her class later that night when her aunt stepped into the room. She beamed at her and waited until she was seated before she bowed her head and said grace.
