A difficult question
Mokou sits down in front of the sign, and very casually sets it a flame, only to watch it return almost instantly. She sighs quietly. "If only everything were like this sign. It wouldn't be such a curse.. or perhaps it'd be the worst fate. I can never really tell."

She pauses and looks around, then slumps slightly, crossing her legs. "How does one bring the dead back?"

Miles winced. That wasn't a happy question to answer for anyone. And he'd had to have that talk with his younger kids when his father had died. He bent down, leaning on his cane, to bring him closer to Mokou's eye level. Not that it took much leaning, given Miles's (lack of) height. This was a serious subject

"I'm afraid that's something no one has figured out how to do." And because most people knew about cryonics where he was from, "Sometimes doctors can catch people as they're dying and fix them, but human brains can only last so long without a heart and lungs. Even if you could get a body working again, the mind would still be gone. We don't know how to set brains back to the way they were."

Oh, boy. Here he was expecting the variant on 'why can't grandpa come back?' He wasn't sure he could give much advice on absolution; his mother might be a better person, but she wasn't here.

"It's not really a formula. Some of it is remembering that they died. On the planet I come from, you burn a funeral offering for your enemies as well as your friends. The superstition was so their ghosts won't haunt you, but ghosts don't have to be real spirits." He wondered if the girl would understand that; Miles wasn't sure he got it until he was seventeen and accidentally dragged Elena and Bothari into a war zone.

"Other than that," Miles looked at his hands, "you try to do something." He tried to think of an example. "If it was in a war, you might work hard for peace. Things like that. Learn from it, and try to make the universe less of a place where things like that happen."

Mokou visibly flinches at the thought of burning an offering. "It'd almost be easier if it were real ghosts."

She lowers her head slightly. "I don't know what I can do. I didn't want to kill them all. But, I had not choice. If I didn't, they'd have died anyway. But...if I hadn't killed one of them, they all would've lived."

No, she doesn't quite realize that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
