While Jade took a couple pictures of the sign and the locals, Double H looked around, wandering not far from Jade's side as he looked for possible threats. Military habits died hard, even though the war was over

"Jade, this area seems safe enough."

"Right." She pointed her camera back up at the sign. "Ooh, is that sign awful. Who put that there?"

Double H smiled. "You could always ask, like it says."

Jade rolled her eyes. "Leave it to you to state the obvious." She lowered her camera and looked at the passerbys. "This is weird. Okay, does anyone know where that sign came from? And I suppose while I'm at it, how do you deal with peacetime boredom?"

"The AVF, which stands for Anti-Violence Field, covers most of the place. You don't attack anyone else, they can't attack you. There's also things called LOLs that sometimes hit people. They aren't bad but they can be annoying. Changing your gender, turning you into some sort of animal or whatever. The most common cause of those are food and drink that you don't know where it came from."

	"Because people can be stupid," Ed says drily. "Or whatever it is is being offered by someone else. I got to spend about a week as a ten-year-old because of LOLed candy that a friend was offering the Nexus and Ed drank something someone else was offering that made him sparkle for several days." 	Ed laughs. "Yeah, sparkles. I teased him for about a month after that one. A couple of the kids on the grounds also were sparkly, but being little girls, I think they got themselves LOLed on purpose. Unlike Ed." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Jade laughed. "Yeah, little girls tend to like that kind of thing. I was never that kind of kid, but one of the kids at the Lighthouse is. She's a doll." "Sorta," Jade said. "He used to be a sweet kid, if a bit of a loner, but after the DomZ took him captive and had him in one of their pods, he's gotten... rebellious. I think he was traumatized more than the other kids. Of course, the other kids got to go home to their rescued parents, Fehn's a permanent resident of the Lighthouse Shelter. So he's got more reason to be sullen, I suppose."

"The horrors the DomZ inflicted on their victims is terrible," Double H said. "They scramble your brains while taking away your life energy to feed themselves. I spent four days in one. Gave my brain a good scrubbing."

Jade looked up at him. "And yet here you are, going on as ever. Honestly, I'm surprised the other kids aren't as bad off as Fehn is. Everyone in the city that was up in the cloister came back a little different. I'd hoped giving them back their lives would help, but..."

"You did what you could, Jade. Don't blame yourself."

"The DomZ were a galaxy-wide threat, and their pet Alpha Sections would help them along by pretending to help the victims all while sending them to their center of operations. Countless worlds have fallen to them. Their victims are long gone, dried husks of whatever they once were," Double H explained.

"Yeah, and the got led right to Hyllis looking for the Shauni force," Jade said, still refusing to name herself as this Shauni.

"Well, either way, you were going to die at the hands of the DomZ and the Alpha Sections. You could go doing nothing, or you could go down fighting and maybe even stop it, was my logic," Jade said.

"This is why IRIS recruited her. She had a lot of talent and had the right kind of attitude for the job," Double H said.

"And they'd just lost you to that spirit reaper," Jade said, "so they needed someone who was at least as good."

"And they found better." Aw, aren't they cute.

	Nope. They haven't even realized they want to date yet, Ed. You may now facepalm at them. "Besides, once they took my uncle Pey'j, I had to keep going to save him," Jade said. "Um." Ed thinks for a moment. "For me, usually excitement pops up when unpleasant people from variations of my world show up. Other than that, I usually manage to avoid it. The Sin's a good place to eat and get drinks. You might be able to get leads on stuff that may be of interest there. For the record, it's outside the AVF, but considering a chunk of the people that works there, it's pretty damn safe. Or simply hang out there a lot, in the case of someone that's married to one of the people that works there and his father."
